amarillo texas: Amarillo Calendar(s) of Events - 04/15/11 10:49 AM
It’s getting close to Easter, and just wanted to remind everyone on ways to keep track of the local schedule in Amarillo, and other areas. First, Amarillo Globe News has a little calendar story on their Local News page. This lists events for the next few days, along with a link on how to put your upcoming event up in the paper! A new site I was just told about – www.HelloAmarillo.com. It covers a lot more than just current events, like local attractions, white and yellow pages, and a lot more! Of course, Amarillo Civic Center – which hosts many … (0 comments)

amarillo texas: Preserve, Protect and Defend MID - 04/01/11 12:07 PM
Congress is looking to create a new tax system for the 21st century, which many people will agree is needed! One of the first things that Congress is doing in this process is putting everything on the table – including the Mortgage Interest Deduction. To do away with the MID at this point would be a horrible idea – it’d make home ownership less attractive, risk lowering home prices, and slow sales down across the nation – so be sure to watch this video and send a note to your representative letting them know you’re against this! Let your friends, co-workers, … (4 comments)

amarillo texas: How to Green up your Bathroom - 03/25/11 11:44 AM
So, we all know the importance of going green – but the touted importance mostly doesn’t come with great ideas on how to help convert existing lifestyles and fixtures to less wasteful style. Most of the time, you’d think there’s only one way to go green – and that would be to spend green!
However, this article has many green tips that won’t break the bank! Everything from remembering to turn off the water when you’re not actively using it (such as while you’re actually brushing your teeth or lathering up) to a cheap way to make existing toilets built before … (0 comments)

amarillo texas: Italian Feasting - 03/11/11 10:10 AM
My favorite magazine has done it again!  I can’t wait to try these out!
Broccoli Rabe with Crispy Prosciutto and Toasted Pine Nuts
A quick dip in boiling water and pairings of prosciutto, pine nuts, and Pecorino Romano cheese help tame broccoli rabe’s bitter bite without curbing its intense vegetal flavor. Serve this colorful dish as a starter or a side—just make sure that the rabe is piping hot when you send it out to the table.
Serves 4 Prep time: 10 minutes Cook time: 15 minutes
2          thin slices prosciutto 1          bunch (about 1 pound) broccoli  rabe (rapini), … (3 comments)

amarillo texas: New American Home - 02/18/11 10:55 AM
For the past 28 years, the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) International Builders’ Show has built what they call the ‘New American Home’ as a way to show off new technology and products.
This year’s home is a custom home being built for specific buyers who seek to attain the “Emerald” ranking as according to the National Green Building Standard (NGBS, ICC 700). That’s the highest ranking for a ‘green’ home, which has state of the art green building technology.
This home, built on an infill building site near downtown Orlando, in an older neighborhood with homes already on the … (1 comments)

amarillo texas: 2010-2011 Remodeling Cost vs. Value Report - 01/10/11 10:37 AM
Now that a new year has started and everyone’s calmed down after the holidays, homeowners are going to be looking forward to doing repairs/replacements/upgrades to their homes to get them ready for sale. Being able to have a handy list of what will give the best bang for the buck – and alternatively what remodeling jobs add little to no value – is a great tool!
As reported by RISMedia, a survey by the National Association of REALTORS found that exterior upgrades – the curb appeal of your home – lead all other home repairs/upgrades in terms of cost effectiveness.

amarillo texas: Trick or Treating with Food Allergies - 10/29/10 11:04 AM
Today, I was looking over a newsletter I get when I saw a very good article that’s right in time for Halloween. If you have kids or know kids with food allergens, Halloween can be full of tricks when most everything sold can trigger a reaction! Luckily, there are ways to trick or treat and still keep your darlings safe!
First idea is to take the bag of candied loot when you get home and weed out all the bad and the ugly, but depending on your child’s exact allergies, this could leave you with not much left. That’s why KidsWithFoodAllergies.org … (0 comments)

amarillo texas: 5 Easy Ways to Save Water at Home - 10/15/10 07:58 AM
This month the EcoBroker Green Update (an exclusive newsletter for EcoBrokers and Ecosociates) talked about 5 easy and usually inexpensive ways to save water at your home. This is becoming more and more vital, as our freshwater resources become scarcer. Below I’ve listed the 5 points, with my own takes on them.First and this is likely the most expensive item: Replace Your Toilets. If you’re toilet is older than 1992, it likely uses 3.5 gallons or more. Today’s toilets are down to 1.28 gallons or lower – that’s about 60% less water PER FLUSH! And you can get ‘dual flush’ if … (3 comments)

amarillo texas: Amarillo is STILL a great place for real estate! - 10/07/10 06:29 AM
Last August, I happened to mention how Amarillo was coming out on Housing Predictor at a 2.1% appreciation.  Texas as a whole has been able to survive the housing bubble, and we're on the upswing!  This week - from Business Wire - Veros Real Estate Solutions has released the September Home Price Appreciation report.
On it, Texas has captured 4 of the top 10 markets for appreciation!  Houston leads the charge, due in part to its low unemployment, with Dallas and Amarillo rounding out the top 3!  Amarillo has moved up in the rankings, moving from 4th in June to 3rd … (0 comments)

amarillo texas: Housing boom incoming? - 02/05/10 09:08 AM
We all know the housing market will recover - it's bound to with the children of the baby boomers starting to enter the housing market.  With builders cutting back new construction to the lowest point in a decade, it seems we could be looking at a shortage of houses for sale.  Imagine that, a shortage!
What does that mean?  Well, right now we're looking at a buyer's market (high inventory, low number of buyers), but there are serious indicators that a seller's market (low inventory, high number of buyers) isn't far off.  In fact, with the economic outlook improving, there's been … (1 comments)

amarillo texas: Amarillo Calendar(s) of Events - 01/08/10 09:24 AM
In this busy world, it's sometimes hard to keep track of all the events going on our own home towns.  Well, for Amarillo, I've found several helpful websites to help keep me up to date.
First, Amarillo Globe News has a little calendar story on their Local News page.  This list events for the next few days, along with a link on how to put your upcoming event up in the paper!
Another helpful site is Eventful.com, though they tend to have a lot of ‘TBA' events that are spelled out in the notes.  This site also has lots of musicians … (0 comments)

amarillo texas: Things to consider when choosing a neighborhood - 12/14/09 02:27 AM
Obviously every individual has his or her preference for selecting a neighborhood. But the Homebuyers E-Guide (http://recenter.tamu.edu/pdf/1044.pdf) offers several key considerations:
How close will you be to your employment? Driving a long distance may get old in a hurry, and with the cost of gasoline these days . . . How close is the neighborhood to shopping?  If it's a 20-minute trip to get buns, will your children have to eat their hotdogs without them? How close is the neighborhood to other important places in your life - houses of worship, schools, parks, medical services? If you need public transportation, does … (0 comments)
