colorado: The Land - Get Outdoors & Take Time to Enjoy it in 2019
- 12/31/18 08:11 PM
Have you ever heard a line in a movie that just kind of stuck with you, even years after you read a book or watched a movie? For me, in Margaret Mitchell's, "Gone With the Wind," Gerald O'Hara made a comment to his daughter Scarlet about land, early in the story. For whatever reason, his comment to was seared into my memory as if he spoke it to me. He said: “The land is the only thing in the world worth working for, worth fighting for, worth dying for, because it's the only thing that lasts." Sometimes, I wonder if Gerald

colorado: Emergency Plans and Winter Plans for those with Animals
- 10/01/16 10:18 AM
When you have chickens, horses, cows, pigs, goats or other outdoor animals, it is important to prepare for the winter months. At the same time, it is also important to have a plan to take care of the animals in the event of an emergency. I realized that many of the things that I need to address on my ranch for our upcoming Colorado winter are also addressed in emergency planning. So this year, I am going to try to work on both at the same time. This year, I am also putting my emergency plan in writing. That

colorado: Are the Wind Turbines Hurting Property Values In Calhan, CO ?
- 05/28/16 09:40 AM
This time last year, the wind farm in Calhan, Colorado was under construction. The wind farm began commercial operation last October. This wind farm is somewhat unique in that the wind turbines are located in a rural area with lots of homes in the same general vicinity. A common concern has been that the wind turbines would hurt the rural property values of homes in Calhan. They are large and it is impossible to NOT notice them. Are the wind turbines hurting property values in Calhan? Short answer - the sales data clearly says no. I pulled sales comps

colorado: Snow Day for the Horses.....
- 02/15/16 07:30 AM
Snow Day for the Horses. The last few days have been spring like here in the Colorado Springs area. The sun has been shining and the temperatures have been in the 50's. The snow from our big storm about two weeks ago has almost completely melted. So, I can now enjoy a few of the snow pictures that I took. When the winter storm came through, my horses were very happy to be able to stay inside their stalls in the barn. (A barn is a VERY good thing to have when the weather gets bad.)

- 01/05/16 09:04 AM
The Wind Turbines of Calhan, CO – Beauty is in the Eye of the Beholder How many times have you heard that “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder?” Or how many times have you been asked, “Is the glass is half empty or half full? It is all a matter of perspective, or so I tell myself, when it comes to the wind turbines in Calhan. The wind turbines in Calhan are not going away, so I can choose to view them positively or negatively. So….this year I decided that I am going to do my best to find the beauty

colorado: The movie, “Lonesome Dove”- Selling a Lifestyle
- 02/23/14 08:46 AM
Have you ever wished that you could have been born in a different era? Every now and then, I find myself thinking about what it would have been like to have been a cowboy or a rancher back in the late 1800’s. As such, I love the Western movie, “Lonesome Dove.” As a real estate broker, I would love to create several short videos that capture the cowboy spirit and lifestyle as well as this movie does. The movie is loosely based on the story of the legendary cattlemen, Charles Goodnight and Oliver Loving’s creation of what became known

colorado: An Old Fence and a December Sunrise in Peyton, Colorado
- 12/20/13 01:39 PM
Have you ever noticed that some of the most beautiful sunrises and sunsets seem to foretell a change in weather? In the Colorado Springs area, we enjoy about 300 days of sunshine per year. Cloudy days seem to be few and far between. This means that we do not have a lot of spectacular sunrises and sunsets throughout the year. As result, we tend to REALLY appreciate the ones that we do have. Last Wednesday was one of the beautiful sunrise mornings. These photographs were taken in Peyton, Colorado. Peyton is located about 45 minutes north east of downtown Colorado Springs. Peyton is

colorado: Colorado Balloon Classic- Worth the 5 am Wake Up Call
- 09/05/13 12:11 PM
On Monday morning, Labor Day, I drug myself out of bed at 5 am. I quickly got dressed. I grabbed a cup of coffee and dashed out the door hoping that I wasn’t going to be late for the 37th Annual Colorado Balloon Classic that was being held at Memorial Park in Colorado Springs. All across town, other families were doing the same – except many had kids. We all wanted to be at Memorial Park for the mass ascension of dozens of hot air balloons. The Colorado Balloon Classic is the largest hot air balloon event in Colorado. It

colorado: What is a snow fence?
- 03/17/13 02:33 PM
What is a Snow Fence? I am from College Station, Texas. It rarely snows in College Station so snow fences were not part of my vocabulary. I’ve discovered there are a lot people from Texas that are moving to Colorado. I've also discovered that there are a lot of snow fences in Colorado. Snow fences are used to control blowing snow and to prevent snow drifts from forming on roads or in parking lots. Research has shown that the snow fences reduce the number of automobile accidents and that it costs less to install and maintain snow fences

colorado: I'm Alright, Prairie Dogs & Colorado Green Chili
- 03/10/13 01:17 PM
I'm Alright, Prairie Dogs and Colorado Green Chili - what do they have to do with sustainability? The song running through my mind today has been "I am alright" by Kenny Loggins. I've also been thinking about a sustainability event that I attended recently quite possibly because of the gopher in the movie Caddy Shack which dances to "I am alright." On March 1, 2013, the University of Colorado Colorado Springs hosted an event called Sustainnovation. The purpose of the event was to highlight the work and successes of sustainability initiatives on the campus. It also provided the chance to learn,

colorado: The Colors of Winter
- 01/14/13 10:17 AM
Compared to Texas, the winters in Colorado last a long time. However, the Denver and Colorado Springs areas get about 300 days of sunshine a year. When it snows, the snow generally doesn’t last very long. So, we are left with months of brown yards and gardens. In preparation for a post that will be coming later this week, I’ve been searching out winter garden ideas. I noticed that if we take time to look closely, it is colorful in the winter especially in Colorado. Winter Succulents Snow Stay tuned for the winter gardening

colorado: Photo Essay: Colorado Wildlife on a COLD Morning
- 01/13/13 09:35 AM
This winter, my favorite thing way to spend the cold, snowy weekends is at a friend’s charming log home in Elizabeth, Colorado. Elizabeth is small rural community located about equidistance from Denver and Colorado Springs. When I woke up this morning, it was maybe 4 degrees outside. When I finally ventured downstairs and looked out the windows, I was grateful that my camera was close by. Regardless of whether a country home is your primary residence or your weekend get away, the ability to see wildlife from your living room window is a

colorado: Colorado land IS selling: Colorado Springs Land Market Report
- 09/30/11 02:07 PM
Despite all the doom and gloom that you hear on the news, land IS selling in the Colorado Springs area. In fact, 7 more land transactions closed this year between June 1 and Sept. 29 as compared to the same time period last year. Over the last four months, 34 land transactions closed as compared to 27 last year. Additionally, more expensive tracts have been selling this year. The source of my data is from the Pikes Peak MLS. It may not include all transactions that occurred. For a sale to qualify to be listed in this particular snapshot, the land
