computer upgrade: What Is The Real Cost Of Upgrading To A New Computer?

Back in the early 1990s when I was building computers for a living, I didn't understand why consumers where buying these cpu upgrade chips for $200+. These chips where usually from AMD, and all that need to do the upgrade was to take out the current processor, connect it to the upgrade chip and connect them both to the motherboard and the computer should be faster.
