independent contractor: How Do You Motivate Independent Contractors?

I have been to about every single industry before from Automotive to retail to Web, where there independent contractors and they were highly paid hourly. These could be computer network or programmer consultants being paid $100 to $250+ per hour so they are very motivated to work hard to keep the contract and rack in as many hours as possible. Are real estate agents employees or independent contractors? My understanding is that agents are independent contractors because they are supposely allow to come and go as they please and do the work their way and that they are paid only commission. Lately I been seeing offices that tell their agents when to come in, when to leave, what their schedule should be, etc. If you don't prospect 8 hours a day every Monday and Tuesday, you are fired. Does that blur the line for the agent to be an employee? I am curious because in a few years … (10 comments)
