A Mother's Love

If you have birthed, bathed, bundled and burped a child, you are a mother. One thing that is certain in life, is that early relationships helped shape our lives and result in how we going about adulting.

Nerdin Gardens: A Symphony of Happiness

"Earth laughs in flowers"~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

Spring is evident as I see these fluffy buds bursting out all over this fruitless plum tree. They spring to life, bringing subtle beauty and color to every passerby. And if Ralph Waldo Emerson is correct, this tree is a symphony of happiness, spreading good cheer to those who take notice!

Happy Saturday to you all.

The Immediate Effects of Neglect

As an avid gardener, the nurturing of plant material is not a loose suggestion. It is imperative to consistently strike a clear balance with the utmost care, maintenance and follow up or the results can be disastrous.

Without water, sunshine and good soil, they struggle to maintain life. Unable to provide for themselves, plants depend on a gardeners good graces and the appreciation that comes from growing food.

The same for entering into business with prosperous expectations. Forgoing dependable processes, honest intentions and the Sphere of Influence, it can eventually die, becoming an industry statistic.

Like nature, it can be … (14 comments)

Nerdin Gardens: Grounds Maintenance Supervisor

At the first sign of spring, the black shade cloth is rolled off the raised garden beds. All watering emitter-systems are removed, then the earth is tilled, turning the soil thoroughly, removing dead roots and inorganic material.

Next step is to amend by adding fertilizer to the already rich, black soil. One by one, each plant is placed in a predetermined spot to ensure optimum growth. New emitters placed near each one for adequate watering.

As soon as blooms appear, the bee hive just outside the perimeter fence will serve to pollinate every single one and perhaps be other … (17 comments)

Nerdin Gardens: Last, Bud Not Least

Spring has arrived to the southern Utah area. The peach, pear, plot, apricots, almond and plum trees in the orchard are blossoming out in pink and white blooms, proudly showing off their clustered flowers.

Oh, but wait now...
As I walk up to the the two cherry trees, I notice they are a little late to the blooming party, they may be last, bud not least!

Garden Trivia:
Did you know that sweet cherry trees require a male and female tree to pollinate in order to produce fruit? Sour cherry trees are self-pollinators and do not need more than one … (16 comments)

My Tulips say "It's Spring!"

What do yours say?

From my two lips, I will also say, "It's the First Day of SPRING!"

My appreciation for flowers is deep rooted and long lasting. When spring arrives, spirits become elevated along with a sense of renewal that grows every season. Nature delivers on time. Every time. Proof of pure follow through with optimum performance.

Nerdin Gardens: Growing Pains

Most people enjoy having fresh fruits and vegetables within easy reach without the required work in growing them. Shopping at the local grocery store or farmer's market can easily achieve that desire.

For us, maintaining a healthy garden space means manually pulling weeds, ridding pests naturally, encouraging full potential growth through measured means like consistent watering and fertilization.

Successful gardening can be achieved by:
Showing up Being proactive Paying close attention  Self-motivating practices Finding solutions to problem

Jumping in with enthusiasm by showing up every day and the less effort required. Leave for a few days and come home to overgrown … (21 comments)

Nerdin Gardens: A Wave of Happy Daffodils!

A small cluster of Daffodils were flowering at the end of the long driveway, making quite an impression with all who passed by. Smiling, I strolled up to them, taking a few photo's of the bright yellow blooms.

A gust of wind buffeted suddenly. Glancing over at them and what did I see? A few flowering beauties waving back at me!

Nerdin Gardens: The Artichoke plant adds ornamental beauty to any landscape.

My husband, a master gardener, often adds pops of color, interest and depth to any outside area. Knowing by instinct, the conditions and care that plant material needs to thrive, is pertinent to his continued success.

Artichokes grow best in sunny areas, can tolerate some shade, but the flower buds will be stunted. Fertile soil and good drainage guarantees adequate growth. The life span of the artichoke is 3 to 5 years.

They need plenty of room to stretch out in garden spaces but require little attention, other than watching for aphids.  They … (25 comments)

Nerdin Gardens: Modern Day Mr. Green Jeans

When early Spring makes a showing, my husband, affectionately known as Mr. Green Greens, will begin the first stages in planting the garden, like: Tilling, feeding the soil, ensuring systems are in good working order.

A diverse selection of fruits and vegetables are planned once again. Each year, we save quite a bit of money on fresh produce and every growing season, a renewed excitement begins, along with required hard work.

No time for lazy standards! Mr. Green Jeans and I often meet in the garden to decide on which fruits and vegetables will serve us well. … (22 comments)

Suddenly, buds blossom, blooms are popping, leaves sprouting, in celebration of the reason for their season while meeting and exceeding goals. There's much to learn about nature's successful ways.

Nerdin Gardens: Color My World Vivid Red and Bright Yellow

Perusing the many flowers dotting our landscape, the Ketchup and Mustard Rose  lives up to its fun name with red petals and a deep yellow on the reverse side. Small in stature but big and bold in appearance.

This plant produces small multiples, flourished, elegant blooms of high-centered, ruby-red flowers. Consistent blooming from late spring into fall, the festive petals smell like crisp apples and tea fragrance.

The color combination tends to make me a little hungry and a hankering for a fresh off-the-grill hot dog with some ketchup & mustard, a little onion, … (16 comments)
