braidwood home inspection: Maybe a Seinfeld Episode?

Maybe a Seinfeld Episode? Many years ago when I first started doing inspections, I had the pleasure of inspecting a condo for my daughter and her soon to be husband. The marriage didn't last for a few good reasons but that's not what this story is about. They were buying unit one of a 4 unit condo. The complex was horseshoe shaped with a detached row of garages in the middle of the horseshoe. The seller was home. As I walked around the back by the gas meters, I could smell a strong natural gas smell at the meters. I (8 comments)
braidwood home inspection: Good Reminder for Homeowners
- 01/19/22 10:12 AM
Old post but really good reminder for any homeowner. I've said it before...Water always wins and it is not your friend inside your home. This sump pump discharge pipe jumped out at me the minute I saw it at my Bourbonnais Illinois Home inspection. Matted down grass. Moss growing on the wall. Large opening where the pipe exits the wall. It took every ounce of willpower to not run inside the house and look at the interior wall, joists and plywood. The house next door had an elbow directing the water down into the drain pipe away from the house.

braidwood home inspection: Winter is Coming Fast- Ready or Not
- 10/23/21 06:18 PM
Winter weather is coming fast. Bourbonnais, Illinois was 36 degrees last night. There are a few things that are worse than a furnace acting up in the middle of the winter, but for the life of me I can't think of any right now. Your furnace or boiler needs an annual checkup. REPEATING Your furnace or boiler needs an annual checkup. Don't wait. If you put it off until November or December, you're asking for trouble. Waiting until the snow flies means you waited about 3 months too long. Now if you're depending on something like this old furnace (8 comments)
braidwood home inspection: It's the Little Things

It's the Little Things We have had a crazy amount of snow in Illinois this season. My snowblower has been running more this year that the past 3 years combined. Home inspections in Bourbonnais and surrounding areas have been a real challenge. Can't see the roof, huge drifts of snow to plow through and dangerously frigid temperatures have made this winter one for the record books. If you don't have a safety pack in your car when heading out, you are taking a huge risk with your life. The items we require the inspectors at SLS Home Inspections to carry (3 comments)
braidwood home inspection: Best Years of My Life

What did we do last year or the year before that made a difference in our business? Simply put, I stopped trying to run a business all by myself. In July 2018, I got a phone call from a past client. His name was Luke and he had purchesed the home I inspected for him back in 2016 and for the next 2 years, he had spent many hours reading and studying all about home inspections. He determined that he did not want to be an owner of a company, rather he was wanting to be able (3 comments)
braidwood home inspection: Old Man Winter is on the Way. It's Furnace Time!

Old Man Winter is on the Way. It's Furnace Time! Winter was pretty rough in Bourbonnais, Illinois last year. There are a few things that are worse than a furnace acting up in the middle of the winter, but for the life of me I can't think of any right now. Your furnace needs an annual checkup and if you put it off until now, you're asking for trouble. Waiting until the snow flies means you waited about 3 months too long. Now if you're depending on something like this old furnace to keep you warm through the winter, then you might want to invest in a space (2 comments)
braidwood home inspection: Don't You Just Hate Dried Out Leaky Boots?

Don't you just hate dried out leaky bootsRian season is here again, is your roof ready? I spend enough time doing home inspections in the Bourbonnais and Kankakee Illinois area up on roofs to see just about everything that the buyers can't see. There seems to be a limited life cycle for the plumbing boots that protect the house interior from the rain and snow that pound the roof year 'round. They should remain flexible and tight around the plumbing stack pipe and if they are, there is not a single drop of water allowed into the attic and interior. There are no (10 comments)
