manhattan home inspection: All Because I Raised my Hand - 07/31/24 12:27 PM
All Because I Raised my Hand
As I write this letter, I am in the final stages of selling my company that I started 17 years ago. The interesting thing is, I never thought I would be in this position when I made the giant leap of faith to start a business on my own. I just figured I would someday hang up the tool bag and take down the website and fade away. But none of it would have happened if I hadn't raised my hand one December morning in 1997.

manhattan home inspection: Good Reminder for Homeowners - 01/19/22 10:12 AM
Old post but really good reminder for any homeowner.
I've said it before...Water always wins and it is not your friend inside your home.
This sump pump discharge pipe jumped out at me the minute I saw it at my Bourbonnais Illinois Home inspection.
Matted down grass. Moss growing on the wall. Large opening where the pipe exits the wall. It took every ounce of willpower to not run inside the house and look at the interior wall, joists and plywood. The house next door had an elbow directing the water down into the drain pipe away from the house.

manhattan home inspection: Winter is Coming Fast- Ready or Not - 10/23/21 06:18 PM
Winter weather is coming fast. Bourbonnais, Illinois was 36 degrees last night.
There are a few things that are worse than a furnace acting up in the middle of the winter, but for the life of me I can't think of any right now. Your furnace or boiler needs an annual checkup.
REPEATING   Your furnace or boiler needs an annual checkup. Don't wait.
If you put it off until November or December, you're asking for trouble. Waiting until the snow flies means you waited about 3 months too long. Now if you're depending on something like this old furnace … (8 comments)

manhattan home inspection: It's the Little Things - 02/27/21 06:46 AM
It's the Little Things
We have had a crazy amount of snow in Illinois this season. My snowblower has been running more this year that the past 3 years combined. Home inspections in Bourbonnais and surrounding areas have been a real challenge. Can't see the roof, huge drifts of snow to plow through and dangerously frigid temperatures have made this winter one for the record books. If you don't have a safety pack in your car when heading out, you are taking a huge risk with your life. The items we require the inspectors at SLS Home Inspections to carry … (3 comments)

manhattan home inspection: Perfect Home Improvement Project for Each Season - 10/12/20 06:46 AM
This post really caught my eye. I tell buyers all the time about taking care of their new home. maitaining it one of the best things they can do to keep or improve the value of the home. Fall is a great time to catch up on a few jobs you may have put off over the busy summer. Maybe it was so hot and rainy or smokey, but before winter, it would be a great idea to wrap up the house for winter and tackle a few inside jobs.

manhattan home inspection: 10 Years and Still Growing - 07/18/19 07:25 AM
10 years and still growing. Hard to believe it's nearly ten years in business as a full time home inspector. But I've enjoyed every minute and can't wait for what's to come.
2009- At this time in 2009 I was working for another company in the building materials industry and had completed less than 20 inspections, total in 2 1/2 years. I was frustrated as a territory manage for that company and requested a demotion to prevent my brain from exploding from the ignorance of dealing with stupid sales and regional managers. The extra time I was going to have by not working … (5 comments)

manhattan home inspection: Winter is not Coming, It's here and it's Mad - 01/28/19 07:56 AM
Winter is not Coming, It's here and it's Mad
Old Man Winter is here and he's here with a vengeance. It's Furnace Time! Winter was pretty rough in Bourbonnais, Illinois last year and it's even worse this year.
