What a wonderful 9 years it's been as a home inspector. The first 3 were while I was a full time employee for a moulding company servicing Home Depot Stores in the midwest. I had a bad feeling about the direction of this company and the management's attitude toward the reps that I was in charge of. Many years ago I went to a local community college for a small business seminar. I had not even started doing inspection for fees yet. I was practicing on some friend's homes to develop a system and not waste so much time rewalking the home. The speaker at the seminar was a retired local businessman. More Cool Hidden Gems.
Sometimes I get asked during an inspection about how I deal with crawl spaces or creepy spiders or attics that are 120 degrees or just gross dirty homes. It's quite simple really. I just explain to them that I don't see them or have to deal with those things all the time.
On the days there are none of the above, there may be beautiful hidden gems in a home that amaze me, astound me at their coolness, or are so classically beautiful, it makes up for the yucky stuff ten times over. Here … (3 comments)

Time spent visiting with Agents is never wasted time. In the Bourbonnais-Kankakee Area winter is here and with winter comes the biggest slowdown of the year. How nice would it be to live in sunny Florida or Arizona for the whole year and be able to inspect year 'round? Too bad, I'm not moving. But I do a few things that make the winter a productive time for my business.

1. Office visits become a major priority. Visiting with agents or making an office presentation at a team meeting is easier to schedule in the fall and winter. And I always bring food.

I'm now thinking it would only be great in Hollywood, not on my home inspection. I was inspecting a home in Kankakee, Illinois and while inspecting the roof, I saw something floating in the pool that I have not been able to identify. I actually do Mold and air quality testing, but something told me that this was more than just a simple aspergillus/penicillium.

Mild or not, there's still time to check your furnace.
Winter has been pretty mild in Bourbonnais, Illinois and all across the mid west this year. In fact, there are areas suffering from severe flooding as I write this post.
There are a few things that are worse than a furnace acting up in the middle of the winter, but for the life of me I can't think of any right now.
