midcentury modern: 5280mod Explores Bow Mar

For those of you who have never been (or even those who have), you must spend an hour on a sunny day winding your way through Bow Mar. As with many rural areas post-WWII, large farms were converted into residential housing developments. Bow Mar is by far one of the most well done farm to subdivision conversions in the Denver Metro area. The town was created in 1958 after most of its 295 residences were already built. The late Richard Crowther was a pioneer in green development, passive solar design, and energy efficiency. He gave lectures on solar energy at universities nationwide and wrote some of the most important books on the subject, including the famous Sun, Earth: Alternative Energy Design for Architecture in 1983. Richard Crowther started as an Art Deco neon-light designer for a firm in San Diego, where he was commissioned to help design the spires of San Francisco's Golden Gate International Exposition.

Recently the home of Denver's mid-century architecture/design team, Joseph and Louise Marlow, came on the market. Not surprisingly, it was under contract within a week. A remarkable modernist residence from 1948 with original features we consider contemporary...waxed concrete floors with radiant heat, for instance.
The Marlow's designed the home for their own family and it is still a very livable, family friendly space. More...
