renovation raiders: What is your REAL monthly payment when you buy a home?

In the land flowing of homeownership opportunity, there are some things, some very real things that need to be put into the equation when it comes to owning a home. Now, it is true that having a place of your own of ANY kind increases your expenses from living with roommates, etc... What I am talking about here is a doing a little honest mental planning & prep work to "vet" your real (beyond closing) monthly payment in the real world.

My clients bough this foreclosure for a very good price, but for a number of reasons, including finishing vet school, they never got around to updating the kitchen/dining room.....
