schools: Cursive Writing Going Away? - 10/15/06 09:51 PM
I was shocked to read in the Sunday paper yesterday that many students in school are not learning cursive writing. Yes, I know computers have come into the classrooms and I think that's great, but that shouldn't be reason to not learn to write. Many schools say they have to spend so much time preparing for standard tests such as the FCAT here in Florida, that there is no time to learn cursive. It reported that for 1.5 million students taking the written section of the SAT, only 15% used cursive in their responses - the others just printed.

In Pinellas County, Florida, the School Board no longer assigns students to a neighborhood school. For elementary, middle and high schools, the county is divided into zones, and parents/students get to "choose" any school within that zone. "Choose" means that by a certain deadline they can apply to three schools of their choice - then it really becomes a lottery - they may or may not get one of their first three choices.
