styled and sold: What is in a name? Home Staging? House Fluffing?? - 11/27/10 06:56 AM
Home Stager, House Fluffer, House Stylist.....
I recall many years ago when I was attending Parsons School of Design we were debating in one of my classes the terms "decorator vs, designer". The professor said "I don't care what they call me, as long as they call me!" Ok, that makes sense. But let's face it, Home Staging is an unregulated industry and the term "stager" means many different things to different people. Different stagers have different talents and areas of expertise that they bring to the table. Folks who hire us, like to know what to expect from us. They … (19 comments)

styled and sold: Enhancing Property Value with Curb Appeal- Honey! Stop the Car! I could live here! - 05/01/09 08:07 AM
We know how important curb appeal is when you home is for sale, but where do you begin?  Here is a checklist for the exterior of your home and a few tips on some inexpensive things you can do to make your home for sale stand out from the competition on the listing photos and entice buyers to pull the car over and take a look. The yard and surrounding environment should be well maintained and visually appealing (no trash cans!).  The home itself must be in good repair and appear freshly painted.  A new welcome mat, house number and mailbox will … (11 comments)

styled and sold: A Marketing Tool for Stagers that can pay for itself- now live! - 03/16/09 11:14 AM
I had a Problem
I have what I consider to be a beautiful website (www.styledandsold.com). I paid a small fortune for it and labored with the web designer for months before it was complete. If you build it, they will come. I installed a site meter. They didn’t come. All of my pretty before and afters, all of my compelling text…. languished!I had built an online (expensive) virtual brochure with a limited audience. In addition, I have written a wonderful e-book , Styled by Design (www.styledbydesign.com) about the design principles of home staging. It’s been very well received but I was looking for an … (2 comments)

styled and sold: The Psychology of Color - 03/02/09 10:32 AM
Greetings! I just finished an article I am writing for the Interior Design issue of a local periodical here in the Hamptons on The Psychology of Color. I am posting it for your purusal and look forward to your comments. As Home Stagers we all ove color and it can be helpful to establish ourselves as experts if we know a little about the science of color.
While doing some research I found a fun quiz on color, I thought it was amazingly accurate (and fun) for such a short questionnaire. You can take it here:http://www.truevaluepaint.com/content/Color/ColorQuiz.aspx.
What is your color?

styled and sold: Increasing Property Value with Curb Appeal - 02/18/09 10:32 AM
I just finished writing a 400 word article for a luxury home magazine on curb appeal. Thought I'd share it in case anyone needs some stats on curb appeal or some ammunition for convincing a reticent client. Enjoy!
"Curb appeal” is the overall impression of your home when you first approach it; the exterior appearance of the house and the way it is landscaped and maintained, it is the total presentation. A well maintained home with beautiful landscaping suggests that a home has been well taken care of and loved; it increases the perception of the value of the home.  If … (7 comments)

styled and sold: Are You Merchandising Your Clients Home? - 02/07/09 08:58 AM

Greetings fellow Home Staging Professionals! I just came across some material that I used when I trained designers in the Model Home Industry. It made me think about how it applies to us, particularly in this economy.  Effective Home Staging is not so much about "neutralizing" a home, but creating a home that inspires and one that a potential buyer will fall in love with. I never underestimate the importance of 'love at first sight" when merchandising a home to sell.
I submit this to you for your perusal and welcome your comments.

styled and sold: Maximize You Real Estate Profits - 01/27/09 08:31 AM

Fellow professionals, I have been working on article on Home Staging for a local magazine called Homes of the Hamptons. I want to give a strong, clear, no nonsense message (without being brusque) and I have only 250 words to play with! I thought I'd throw it out into cyber space and ask my staging associates on Active Rain for feedback. Thank you!

If you currently have a home for sale or for rent, it’s likely you are feeling challenged in the current market. There is good news. There are specific steps that you can take to maximize the … (18 comments)

styled and sold: Accessorize Like a Pro! - 01/12/09 05:23 AM
Greetings!  Today my little pond is frozen and my 17 year old son, who has only ever skated on a rink, is bound and determined to go skating. So as a Mom, I am bound to sit here watching him with caution and worry! In the mean time as a professional who would like to see greater acceptance and awareness of the Home Staging and Home Merchandising industry and an increased level of professionalism among all of us, I am posting to my blog.  I have been trying to determine how I can use my knowledge and skills to help. My … (20 comments)
