Middle class income falls...but not in Washington D.C. & NVA During the "first" recession, income dropped for the typical American household in Washington DC actually saw income rise. National median household income dropped 1.4% to $50,046 in 2010, according to Census statistics. But in 21 states and the District of Columbia, households in the middle of the pay scale realized income increases according to a CNN Money data analysis. Washington D.C. experienced the biggest hike in median income over the past four years, soaring 12.1% to $60,903 last year. Some D.C. Metro areas also increased.
