These beautiful magnolias are blooming right in my yard. The crabapple trees are quite beautiful with their pink blooms, and even the apple trees have very beautiful blooms in various stages. I think the flowers were really ready for Spring, as we all were! So far we haven't had our 'normal' April snow, so maybe the 'snow Gods' feel we got enough snow during winter and are giving us a break this year in April.

The fresh snowfall Friday afternoon in Maggie Valley was so light and perfect that I really did look around my little Maggie Valley cabin for something I could make into chocolate sauce to pour on this bowl of snow. These photos were taken on the before-dawn trip to frozen Lake Junaluska on January 6, 2010. Lake Junaluska is located right between Waynesville and Maggie Valley NC. Most active listings in Haywood County NC 'appear to be' overpriced (in denial), and translate to an absorption rate of 27.31 months and an average time to sell a house of 259 days. Sales as of 12/29/09 had an average selling price of $203,381 …. (see red numbers in chart). Canton has the lowest average listing price and the lowest number (significantly) of days on market. End of year numbers will be posted starting tomorrow (01/08/2010).

Cruising back to Maggie Valley from Hazelwood and the Smoky Mountain Coffee Roasters and Cafe the other day was quite pleasant with the bright blue skies, the mountains evident in the distance, and white snow here and there. It was a nice, quick ride to the free snow boarding playground at the very entrance to Campbell Woods and Maggie Valley (left hand side of Dellwood/Soco when entering Maggie Valley). I do believe I saw fresh snow on the snow boarding playground this week.

Following our big snow storm and power outage last week, I decided to head, Flip in hand, to KMart in Waynesville for a camping stove, but I was too late. Not a camper stove on the shelves, so off I went to Ingles Grocery Store. Ingles was so jammed with customers that I didn’t even go inside; instead I drove through Lake Junaluska and then drove by Tube World in Maggie Valley. Last Sunday I visited the Cabbage Rose in Maggie Valley and took a few photos to post as there is no way to describe in words the magical Christmas shop inside. There are some great Cowgirl ornaments I want to photograph next time for my horse website. Santa was out helping the local economy and selling some Christmas trees in Maggie Valley over the weekend. Coming up this next weekend is the Maggie Valley Christmas Parade Saturday evening (12/05). Just a little bit up the road from Ghost Town in the Sky and the Fie Top Road turnoff to Cataloochee Ski Area in Maggie Valley is a ‘vintage’ strip mall smack dab on the creek, and below are photos of some of the signs that remain on site. The location of the 'vintage' strip mall is one that I really like (right on the way over the mountain to Cherokee), especially considering the buildings in the little mall are directly on the creek. Sunday for me is like any other day ... I do what I love, which is work. Outside it is in the 40's, dark, dreary and drizzling; a perfect day to stay indoors and be creative. Downtown Waynesville, however, is holding an Open House to show off all of the quaint little shops all dressed up for the Holidays, and I don't want to miss that. Here's a little bit of Sparkle for Sunday, captured in Maggie Valley early Saturday evening.

This beautiful black horse with a blaze is always alone in his Maggie Valley pasture within view of Soco Road and Market Square, fenced in with barbed wire which scares me to death since horses can get hurt in a padded stall filled with feet of soft, fresh shavings. He's none the worse for the wear, however, and obviously loves people and visitors.

Susan Miller gave me a wonderful gift early this week.... an Apple Cake ~ but not just any Apple Cake…. it was a ‘Mrs. Miller’s Apple Cake‘ ~ “The ORIGINAL Apple Cake baked and sold in Maggie Valley, NC for over 16 years.” Susan Miller is one of Mrs. Miller’s daughters and is a certified chef and American Culinary Federation Member (since 2000), complete with a ServSafe Certification.
