things to do near tucson: Quemado, New Mexico: Road Trip! - 07/05/15 10:48 AM
Quemado, New Mexico:  Road Trip!
Quemado is a little place along side of the road in in Catron County, New Mexico,  population somewhere around 250-300.  It caught my eye for two reasons - I had a recent real estate listing on a road named Quemado in Marana, AZ, and secondly, I was looking for a weekend getaway to cooler temps.
The drive up was beautiful, cutting across Arizona's White Mountains and skirting the northern edge as we neared the New Mexico border.  The town of Quemado is nestled at an elevation of 6,970 feet.
I looked up the name Quemado, and in Spanish, the … (1 comments)

things to do near tucson: Road Trip to the Arizona Chiricahuas! - 05/12/14 03:06 AM

Road Trip to the Arizona Chiricahuas!

The Chiricahua National Monument is about 36 miles southeast of Willcoz, AZ.  From Houghton Road in South Tucson, the trip took about 2 hours.  It’s a scenic drive through Texas Canyon and northern parts of the Dragoons, as well as grasslands, wine-land, and rolling hills filled with cattle and horses.

In studying the area information, Geologists say there was a huge volcanic eruption 27 million years ago. White-hot ash spewed forth from the Turkey Creek Caldera, (at 1000 times the velocity Mt. St. Helens)  eventually laying down almost two thousand … (1 comments)

Good Enough Mine in Tombstone, AZ
Had good fun this weekend on a day trip from Tucson, AZ to historic Tombstone, AZ.  We're always looking for things to do near Tucson, AZ.
It was Helldorado Days in Tombstone and we enjoyed the Parade on Sunday, a great barbecue pork sandwich at the Longhorn Restaurant, great shopping, and the various re-enactment pieces played throughout the day.

Our visiting student from France got herself a cowboy hat - I proclaimed her a true American now!
One of the tours we participated in was the Good Enough Mine Tour.  It actually came … (7 comments)

"Helldorado Days" comes to Tombstone, AZ, October 21-23
In 1976 I visited Tombstone, AZ for the first time.  I've been to "old west" stuff before - Tombstone was different.  Tombstone is "real".

The town is a living history and memorial to historic moments of the Old West.  To this day I feel few places capture the way it was quite as well as Tombstone AZ.

Kitt Peak National Observatory:  Things to do Near Tucson

This weekend we took a little trip SW of Tucson to escape the heat and enjoy the views at Kitt Peak National Observatory Visitor Center and Museum.  It's located west on Highway 86, about 75 minutes from downtown Tucson.

It took us the same time to come down Sandario Road from NW Marana.  We also border Saguaro National Park West for a few miles so the scenery is fine!

The world's largest collection of telescopes are located at the Kitt Peak National Observatory; 24 of them!

Thanks Gab, for posting this! Starting today and then every Sunday until the Fall, the Music On Mt Lemmon outdoor series begins!
With temps already at 100 degrees here in Tucson, it takes … (0 comments)
