I just started volunteering for Kankakee County Habitat for Humanity. It's a wonderful project and puts the help where we need it most - right here in our own hometown. Many (yes, I was under this misconception also) are under the impression that houses are just given away. Habitat houses are built for those in need and then sells them to homeowner partners through a no-profit loan. Because the houses are built mainly by volunteers, mortgage payments can be kept reasonably low for those unable to obtain conventional financing.
