Today ground was officially broken at the site of the brand new, Scotch Plains - Fanwood Community Garden.  This new Community Garden is located at the Frazee House complex (the Frazee House is visible behind several of the volunteers in the photo at the right) at 1451 Raritan Road in Scotch Plains.

garden: Tropical Depression Bonnie changes Memorial Day plans - 05/30/16 05:52 AM
The forecast was dismal.
Rain all day. Thunderstorms.
So last night, we got the reverse 911 call that our Memorial Day parade had been cancelled. Lots of surrounding towns got the same call.
The morning started out drizzly and we modified our plans for an indoor barbecue.
And then the sun came out. Still grey skies, but no rain. Here's a few photos of our garden which we are enjoying this afternoon.

Bonnie is apparently causing a lot more trouble south of us and we hope everyone is safe. But for us, we're about to put the charcoal in the grill.
We hope you all enjoyed your … (5 comments)

garden: Frost Warning! Here's how to Protect your Plants! - 03/31/16 08:12 AM
If you're like me, you took advantage of the early spring weather to get some plants in the ground. Peas, lettuce, even a few annual flowers are scattered around our yard, and they were enjoying some beautiful weather for the last few weeks. We also have some spring shrubs and trees that are started to bloom or are in early bud.
But the forecast for the next few nights is winter-like! We have at least a few nights that are forecast to be cold enough for a frost and our delicate spring plants aren't going to make it if we don't protect … (8 comments)

garden: What's going on in Team Zuhl's garden? - 04/17/14 07:25 AM
Twenty snow storms hit NJ this winter, and more than a few were significant storms. We've spent way too many days cooped up with cabin fever and lately, my fingers have been itching to get in the dirt.
We don't have a large garden - just a few flowers here and there and a small 4x8' vegetable bed on the side of the house. Days like today often find me puttering in the garden, probably listening to an audio book on my iPod. Here's what's happening in our garden.
We started out with a few crocuses - note how horrible the lawn … (8 comments)

garden: After the bloom fades - a Primer on Pointsettias - 01/01/14 01:39 AM

To me, pointsettias are the perennial holiday flower. They bring bright red and green into an otherwise dreary landscape, and even one potted pointsettia brightens an entire room. We give them as gifts to some of our clients and referral partners. This year, we were lucky enough to have a son majoring in plant science. He worked in the greenhouse at his college and raised plenty of beautiful pointsettias from seedlings. He also gave us some tips on what to do with the plants after the blooms fade.

Now that the holidays are over, you're probably thinking of putting … (5 comments)

garden: Optimism: Planting Tulips in the Fall - 11/03/13 07:44 PM
All the leaves are brown
And the sky is grey.
As I write this, the completely clouded over sky just got a bit darker and I'm anticipating a bit of rain. The sun will set tonight before I even sit down to dinner, and it will be dark when my alarm goes off tomorrow morning.
Autumn is not for the faint of heart.
So let's all do something today that will remind us of the wonderful things to come. My mother loves to read gardening catalogs when the dreary weather gets her down. Our daughter paints her nails pretty spring colors. … (1 comments)

garden: Drought Resistant Plants for NJ - 07/18/13 12:03 AM
NJ is having a hot and dry July, and our plants have noticed.
If you're not good at remembering to water your plants or maybe don't want to use all the water, but you still want a nice healthy garden, you can choose plants that thrive in this kind of weather. Plants that are native to NJ will thrive in NJ's climate with little attention from the homeowner.
Here's a short list of some beautiful trees that are native to NJ and have very low water needs:

garden: What to do in the Garden this weeknd - 04/13/12 07:19 AM
Good news! This weekend is the day that Burpee says is the average date of last frost here in Union County, NJ! That doesn't mean, of course, that we're out of the woods yet, but odds are that your plants will be fine outside now. Plants may need to be covered if a frost is forecast, so pay attention to the weatherman for at least another few weeks!
What can you plant in the garden? This week, it's safe to directly sow the following seeds into the ground:
arugula beets broccoli broccoli raab brussel sprouts carrots cauliflower endive kale leeks onions … (4 comments)
