rotary: Fanwood-Scotch Plains Rotary Inducts New Officers - 06/23/17 09:52 AM

On Wednesday, June 21st, the Fanwood-Scotch Plains Rotary held their installation dinner at Shackamaxon Country Club.  The new president and board members were sworn in by Past District Governer, Mel Kevoe.

There were about 40 people in attendance as outgoing President, Carmela Resnick presented awards to several Rotarians for appreciation for efforts they made in Fundraising and Service.  Later in the evening, incoming President, Steve Goldberg awarded his predecessor with a Paul Harris Fellow Pin as well as a framed Gavel for her service to the club and community, both near and far.  During Carmela's term, the FSP Rotary has grown … (1 comments)

rotary: Two Libraries Are Unveiling The Library Telescope Program - 05/30/17 01:40 PM
On Thursday, June 1st, 2017 the Fanwood Memorial Library and the Scotch Plains Public Library are kicking off The Library Telescope Project in New Jersey!  Both libraries received a donation of a fully outfitted reflecting telescope.  The funds for the first two telescopes were donated by the Fanwood-Scotch Plains Rotary Club and the fabrications to the telescopes were made by members of Amateur Astronomers, Inc. (AAI) in Cranford.
The telescopes are modified Orion Starblast 4.5 reflectors.  The telescope design was created by Issac Newton (these are Newtonian Telescopes) and are mounted on a single arm altazimuth tabletop mount.  Several modifications were … (6 comments)

rotary: Tree Lighting at the Frazee House Friday 12/5 at 6pm - 12/04/14 12:46 AM
The historic Frazee House in Scotch Plains will hold a Tree Lighting Friday evening at 6pm.  The Frazee is house is one of the oldest landmarks in Union County and the story of Aunt Betty Frazee is delightful!  The event is FREE!  Refreshments will be served.  Parking is limited.
The legend occurs during the battle of Short Hills on June 26, 1777.  During the battle British General Cornwallis came upon the Frazee house and smelled the bread that Aunt Betty was baking for the American troops.  Cornwallis requested a loaf of bread from her.  She gave him a loaf stating: "I … (3 comments)

rotary: How we "Pay it Forward" - 12/01/14 11:30 AM
I like to think that we give back or pay it forward in a lot of different ways.  One could say that helping a young couple find the house where they will raise their family is paying it forward.  In fact just yesterday a couple who we helped purchase a home earlier this year had their first child!
But I am pretty sure that isn't what we're talking about when we say "Pay it Forward."
Jean came up with a great birthday wish that completely embodied the idea of paying it forward.  This was so selfless yet so beautiful!
Several times … (6 comments)

rotary: Dictionary Day comes to Fanwood-Scotch Plains! - 11/19/14 12:48 AM
Today was easy to come up with something for #50YearsOfJean.  For the third year in a row I participated in the annual Rotary Dictionary Day event with the Fanwood-Scotch Plains Rotary Club.
We send teams of 4 or 5 Rotarians to each elementary school in the district where we gave every third grader their own dictionary. The kids absolutely love it when they realize that they get to keep the books. My group went to Coles School where we had four classes of kids come to the gymnasium to get their dictionaries.  We told them a little bit about what … (2 comments)

rotary: Making a difference in our community - 07/07/14 04:38 AM
It has always been a pleasurable experience for me to help others out.  I suppose that is one of the reasons that I love the Real Estate business as much as I do.  Nothing feels as good helping a first time homebuyer into his or her  first house or helping the empty nesters unload their big home and go into a nice 2 bedroom condo.  But that's only helping a few people at a time.
Fortunately I've found an outlet where I can have dramatic impact not just locally, but nationally and even internationally!   I joined a local Rotary Club in the Spring … (5 comments)

rotary: Moore Oklahoma Fundraiser - 05/24/13 10:11 PM
This week the front pages of the papers and the lead story on nearly every news outlet was the devastation in Moore, Oklahoma.  This town has had the misfortune of having been struck (again) by an EF-5 Tornado.  Devastating is almost not descriptive enough for the damage wrought on this town and its people.
We watched in horror, hoping that people would be found alive.  Then suddenly the whole situation become much more personal for us.  One of our past clients has family that lives (lived) in Moore.  When I saw her post on Facebook about her brother's family, I … (1 comments)

rotary: Toward a Polio-Free World - 02/01/13 08:15 PM
Being a recent Rotarian, I've come to learn a lot about the worldwide polio endemic.  Polio isn't something that we hear about anymore.  But polio is still endemic in three countries, Pakistan, Afganistan and Nigeria.
In 1979 Rotary clubs took on the challenge of purchasing and helping to innoculate more than six million children in The Phillipines.  This was the first widespread polio effort made by Rotary.
The effort was so successful that in 1985 Rotary lauched PolioPlus  which was the first and largest private sector support for a public health initiative.  The inital pledge by Rotary at that … (4 comments)

rotary: Service Above Self - 10/03/12 06:39 AM
In late August I got that dreaded piece of mail informing me that I had to serve as a petit juror in Superior Court.  As I went online to fill out the required questionairre I did my best to find a reason NOT to serve, but none of my reasons would get me out of service.
So on the morning of October 2nd I made my way to the courhouse on a foggy, cool morning.  I was pleased that there was plenty of free parking for jurors (I found out the next day that after 9am the lot is nearly full!) … (2 comments)
