thanksgiving: The Night BefoRE Thanksgiving - 11/07/19 11:58 AM
Twas the night before Thanksiving, and all through the 'Rain
Not a creature was posting to whine or complain.
All were sharing friendly comments and thoughful answers
Ignoring the wanna be's and points-advancers.
The blogs were all posted on AR with care
In hopes that the feature fairy would be less rare.
With advice from Barbara T and Roy Kelley
We knew we'd have enough business to fill our belly.
The Siegels and Bob Crane raise the bar,
Joan Cox and Debbie Reynolds are superstars.
There's nothing trivial about Wayne Martin,
Just thinking about our AR friends causes us to hearten.
We've been inspired by the Hansons, the Spears,
and Nina and Michael and Anna Banana for years.

thanksgiving: Thanksgiving with Team Zuhl - 11/28/13 09:54 PM
Welcome to our home for Thanksgiving!
Yesterday was a fun day filled with family! Everyone pitched in and helped.
Here's our daughter Liz, the potato-lover, cutting up her favorite starchy tuber. She's actually a fabulous cook and was in charge of the kitchen for most of the day.

Wayne is the turkey carver.

Jean's job is to wear cute earrings and make turkey shaped crudite platters.

Jean's Mom is a spectacular centerpiece creator and an overall fabulous grandmother.

Our son Paul does the heavy lifting and takes care of Samantha the Wonder … (4 comments)

thanksgiving: Happy Thanksgiving! - 11/25/13 07:12 AM
"As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them."
~ John F. Kennedy

When we count the things that we're grateful for (and that's not a bad habit to get into, by the way), we always count you, our friends at Active Rain.
Thank you for listening to us, letting us rant, offering advice, sharing your stories and yourselves, and being the generous hearted people you are. Thank you for allowing us into your lives, even for just the two minutes it takes for you to … (1 comments)

thanksgiving: Thanksgiving dinner makes me sleepy -but not for the reason you think! - 11/22/12 12:32 AM

Does eating turkey make you sleepy?
That stereotypical post-Thanksgiving dinner nap is almost unavoidable. Your belly fully, you close your eyes for just a moment, and soon you're drifting off into slumber.
You probably think it's the turkey. You've probably heard it's the L-tryptophan in the turkey that makes you sleepy, and, at least to a small degree, you're right.  L-Tryptophan is an amino acid that your body chemically changes into serotonin and melatonin, both of which make you sleepy. In fact, some herbal remedies for insomnia contain serotonin and melatonin.
L-tryptophan that's consumed with protein, as in turkey, … (2 comments)

thanksgiving: Eat Up! Cranberries are Good for You! - 11/20/12 04:30 PM

Our Thanksgiving table, as many others, always includes cranberry sauce. Some years it's homemade, other years it's the stuff out of a can. This year, I'm going to take an an extra serving of cranberry sauce.
Cranberries have the highest level of phenols which are a disease-fighting antioxidant, according to the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry. Antioxidants can prevent stroke, neurodegenerative diseases, cancer, and coronary heart disease.
Other fruits that contain phenols are pears, red grapes, and apples.
Here's the recipe for Cranberry Pear Sauce I'm bringing to dinner this year:
Grate 3 large ripe pears into a … (6 comments)

thanksgiving: 14 things you probably didn't know about turkeys - 11/18/12 07:32 PM
Here are 14 turkey facts you might not have known:
In the US, about 280 million turkeys are sold for the Thanksgiving celebrations.  Each year, the average American eats somewhere between 16 – 18 pounds of turkey.  Californians are the largest consumers of turkey in the United States.  97% of Americans surveyed by the National Turkey Federation eat turkey at Thanksgiving. The average weight of a turkey purchased at Thanksgiving is 15 pounds. The heaviest turkey ever raised was 86 pounds, about the size of a large dog. Turkeys have about 3,500 feathers at maturity. Most turkey feathers are composted. The … (7 comments)
