st paul: Como Park Minnesota Eye Candy—Spring Photo Tour of Conservatory - 04/26/09 03:37 AM
A visit to Como Park in St. Paul, Minnesota brings back so many wonderful memories. As a kid it was a place for the annual summer family reunion with all of the cousins, aunts and uncles. I enjoyed skipping along the stone walkways, through the beautiful flowers in the Como Zoo Conservatory and begging for pennies from my grandmother and great aunts, Ida and Ann, so I could make a wish in the rock fountain Koi pond. It was wonderful to dream of my future wedding where I would have photos taken in this lovely building.

st paul: Enjoy a Saturday Pictorial Walk in the Park--Como Park Zoological Garden That Is! - 04/25/09 11:01 AM

A visit to Como Park in St. Paul, Minnesota brings back so many wonderful memories. As a kid it was a place for the Summer family reunion and a destination for school field trips. As a college student, I enjoyed riding my bike around the lake as it was a short distance from my Hamline University campus dorm. My husband and I spend several of our first dates walking around the park, feeding the ducks at the lake and seeing the Como Zoo animals up close and very personal in their original small cages. Almost every weekend, as a … (12 comments)

st paul: Speechless Sunday--King of the Jungle Zoo Snooze - 04/19/09 01:17 AM

No need for a king-sized bed for Como Park Zoo's big cat...just a few leaves and a bit of shade to catch forty or so winks on a Saturday afternoon. (We thought he was going to get up but he just rolled over.)

st paul: MN State Fair Photos--The Great Minnesota Get Together is Almost Ready! Are YOU? - 08/14/08 02:39 AM
It's Coming! We are just a week away from the GREAT Minnesota get together...better known as the Minnesota State Fair! Preparations for this fabulous event were well underway early this week. Though it looks a bit of a ghost town as of Monday when I dropped off a few entries at the education building, there were signs of the frantic activity soon to come.

Trailers were parked strategically near displays and buildings still without signage.
Crews of hard working men were pulling up tents and working on other displays.

Though only a solitary piece of red farm equipment adorned Machinery Hill, … (16 comments)

st paul: Until the Republicans Arrive in St. Paul, Minnesota...May the Force Be With You! - 08/10/08 01:07 PM
The Science Museum of Minnesota (SMM) has played host to several intergalactic visitors this summer-The Science of STAR WARS opened for a very limited engagement this summer. The extremely popular exhibit has been packed morning, noon and night. Last week the SMM announced the tour would be extended three days until August 27. The SMM is located in downtown St. Paul along the banks of the Mississippi River and across from the XCEL Energy Center. The XCEL, home to NHL Minnesota Wild hockey, will be hosting the Republican National Convention and preparations are well underway for the big event that will … (15 comments)

st paul: It's Festive! It's Historically Irish! It's St Pat's Day with a Minnesota Flair! - 03/17/08 01:15 AM
Or Flaherty...In this case! Though many consider Minnesota to be the home of Swedish and Norwegian immigrants, the Irish have very deep roots in Minnesota's soil. Railroads and farming opportunities enticed Irish immigrants in the late 1800's to the state to settle in colonies along the Mississippi. Of course on St. Patrick's Day every Minnesotan has a bit of the Irish in them. The traditional St. Patrick's Day parade in St. Paul was held this past Saturday as to not conflict with holy week but Minneapolis is holding true to a celebration today.

st paul: Ready to Rumble? Back to the 50’s Weekend is Coming up FAST! - 06/14/07 07:23 AM
The Back to the 50's Weekend Car Show is a time-honored tradition of the Minnesota Street Rod Association (MSRA). From a very humble beginning of 12 members, the association has grown to over 13,000. The Back to the 50's Weekend show boasts 11,000 cars and over 100,000 spectators each year. It is the 2nd largest show of its kind in the World; second only to the NSRA Street Rod Nationals. For three days, June 22-24, Minnesotan's get a chance to walk down memory lane as thousands of restored classic automobiles and their owners take over the state fair grounds. Street rods, … (6 comments)

st paul: Dinosaurs Replace Peanuts in the Twin Cities this Summer - 04/13/07 12:50 AM
My family along with thousands of others searched for a parade of Peanuts Characters for 5 straight years.
First we searched for Snoopy throughout the city of St. Paul in the summer of 2000. The next spring in 2001, we were at it again finding Charlie Brown all around the town. During the next two summers, we looked for Lucy and Linus in Ramsey County parks, street corners and even at the Minnesota State Fair Grounds. The Peanuts parade ended in 2004 with Twin Citians asking "Where's Woodstock?" as we searched for Snoopy and his little yellow friend on decorated doghouses … (2 comments)

st paul: Happy St. Patrick's Day--Minnesota Style! - 03/17/07 01:14 AM
Growing up Irish in St. Paul, Minnesota made March 17th an official holiday! (Okay...only a quarter Irish but on St. Pat's day, whose counting?) We attended the big downtown parade and walked under the "Flaherty" banner. Our dinner was home cooked corned beef and cabbage. We didn't dance, but sang the "When Irish Eyes are Smiling" all day! It was fun to celebrate our heritage. In honor of St. Patrick's Day, I wanted to share some fun Minnesota Irish websites.
