Spring has finally arrived here in Bellingham.  The days are getting longer it's just before 9 PM at the end of April and it's dusk, we're getting some shirtsleeve weather, and there are many events starting to happen every weekend.  This weekend is no exception,there is a Gallery Walk Friday night May 1st, including  the 8th Annual Children's Gallery Walk, The Procession of the Species is happening Saturday, May 2nd, and another unusual event this Saturday is the Appliance Art Revival.

Saturday, May 2nd, Bellingham will be hosting a most unusual parade that celebrates our community, creativity and our connection with nature, The Procession of the Species.  Fun loving environmental friendly folks will be wearing self made costumes of birds, salmon, owls and others. This years theme is fire, water, earth and air.

Saturday, April 25, at Maritime Heritage Park local artist Kuros Zahedi, will turn trash into art with the help of volunteers who show up.
Volunteers  will be provided with gloves and bags to help clean the park. Zahedi will then make a work of art out of the trash.
Zahedi used the trash collected at Maritime Heritage Park last year to create an image of two people dancing in a garden he called "Bellingham Dance." It was made ofplastic bags, beer cans, broken sunglasses and other trash that was found.

The Bellingham Farmers Market will come to life for the 17th year on Saturday April 4 with the mayor tossing out the cabbage to open the season. Farmer's, crafter's, and food vendors will take to the Depot Market Square Saturday at 10:00 AM. Soccer season began in earnest this week, not only did the Seattle Sounders FC play their first games in Quest Field and win, but today was the first game of the season for the Whatcom Youth Soccer League.  My son plays for the Eastside U. 12 we had the luck of the draw and got the first games at 8:00, coach wanted the team there at 7:30 AM.  Kind of early for a Saturday morning. Yes it's true, Bellingham has grown into a two bus station town. With the opening of its new Cordata Bus Station last week the Whatcom Transit Authority (WTA) now has two bus stations. The new Cordata Station will service the fast-growing Cordata neighborhood. With the growth of Whatcom Community College and the area in general, it seems like a natural place for the extension of the bus system. The Legendary Banked Slalom takes place Friday February 6 thru Sunday February 8 at the Mt Baker Ski Area. Mt. Baker has been a kind of Mecca for the snowboarding world ever since they first opened their chairs to snowboarders in the early'80s. The early boarders there started a contest. In 1985, 14 snowboarders raced on Superbowl Sunday to avoid the crowds, and a tradition was born.
This year in it's 24th season, the Banked Slalom has become a celebration of the sport to locals and pros.

Google has done it again. It is upgrading its mobile maps to enable people with mobile phones or other wireless devices to share their whereabouts with family and friends.
This new feature their calling 'Latitude' will add a social feature to google maps. Google is promising to avoid privacy concerns by promising not to retain uses information except for the last location and making it a voluntary program.

Bellingham's Heritage Flight Museum is moving into their new home at 4165 Mitchell Way, near the Bellingham Airport on Saturday, 17 January 2009. There will be a formal program scheduled to begin at 1:00pm.
The museum was founded in 1996 by Maj. General William Anders an Apollo 8 astronaut. The Heritage Flight Museum is dedicated to the preservation and flying of historic military aircraft. Bellingham's Community Food Co-op, our natural cooperative grocer is opening their new store on January 15. The 'second store' will serve the north side of town, located in the fast growing Cordata neighborhood. It is conveniently located across the street from Bellingham's new Cordata Bus Station and down the street from Whatcom Community College. It is not the prettiest building I have ever seen, but it is functional, within budget and green. Some years we don't get much winter here compared to places where they got lots of snow that is, but this year were getting our fair share. Fairhaven is full of unique shops as I mentioned in my post about Fairhaven's Artwood Gallery. Another truly unique place to do your holiday shopping is Good Earth Pottery. It is located in the historic Morgan Block Building next door to Artwood. The Gingerbread house contest was just awesome. Some of the entries were pretty spectacular, and there was lots of time, energy, love, and candy put into them. I was there on Sunday and the Bellingham Cruise Terminal was packed with people enjoying the activities of the day, singers, dancers, Santa, and lots of Gingerbread.
