cedar city gateway to utahs national parks: Cedar City Area Localism Post...Escalante Canyons Art Festival - 09/22/11 05:57 PM

One of the great things about living in Cedar City is that we are more or less the hub of Southern Utah.  We are the Gateway to Utah's National Parks.  This Festival isn't in Cedar City, but rather in Escalante.  It will take place Friday and Saturday.  The Escalante Canyons Art Festival is held in Escalante, Utah.
Some of the Festival events feature the Plein Air painting competition, a fine arts and crafts exhibition and sale.  There will be lectures, poetry and discussions about Everett Ruess.
There will also be exhibits, workshops, gallery open houses, walking tours of nearby … (5 comments)

cedar city gateway to utahs national parks: Cedar City Localism Post...Chinese Opera Orchestra of Shanghai... - 09/22/11 04:04 PM
The Chinese Opera Orchestra of Shanghai will be performing a free concert at the Thorley Recital Hall at Southern Utah University.  This is an exciting opportunity that isn't often afforded us in Cedar City.  We are sort of off the beaten path for Orchestra's from other countries!  The Concert will be at 7:30 PM and is free to the public!
This is a great opportunity to see musicians from another country perform here in Southern Utah!  Come out and support Southern Utah University with this performance!  For more information: call (435) 865-8800 or visit http://www.suu.edu/arts

cedar city gateway to utahs national parks: Real Estate and Earthquake Zones...Shake, Rattle and Roll.... - 09/22/11 03:46 PM
The title isn't meant in any way to diminish the severity, nor the serious nature of an earthquake, it was more of a tongue and cheek statement to myself for taking so long between posts.  This posts that I am linking to is the new suggestions of what to do when you find yourself inside of a building during an earthquake.  Some of the things are the same things I learned a long time ago in Elementary School, but there are some new things.  Like not trying to get outside while things are still shaking.  Anyway, here is the link:http://www.livingincedarcity.com/?p=3342

cedar city gateway to utahs national parks: Real Estate & Earthquake Zones…Getting Prepared #3… - 09/19/11 06:56 AM

Many of you may think that I have forgotten this series.  There were just so many great activities happening last Friday and Saturday that I moved this to the back burner for a few days.  This is the third in the series of getting prepared before the earthquake strikes.  Here is the link to the post:

cedar city gateway to utahs national parks: Parowan Local Events…The Taffetas…. - 09/19/11 05:46 AM

I didn’t get the Taffeta’s into my Parowan Events from last week and I probably should have.  They are performing tonight at the Alladin Theatre on Main Street in Parowan.  This performance is sponsored by the Parowan Community Theater.
Take a walk down Memory Lane, or if you’re like me, take a walk back to a simpler time, as the Taffetas perform classic music from the 1950’s.  I wasn’t born until the 1960’s, so for me it harkens back to Richie and the Fonz from Happy Days.
At any rate it should be a great performance and fun for everyone!  … (4 comments)

cedar city gateway to utahs national parks: Scenic Sunday Storm Clouds..... - 09/17/11 06:02 PM
This photo was actually taken Friday Night before one of the longest lasting lightening and thunderstorms that I have witnessed in a number of years.  I didn't capture any lightening, just he ominous looking clouds that contained the storm.  It turned into quite a storm.  I wish that I had the ability to send this storm to our friends in Texas!  My thoughts and prayers are for rain in that area!  Anyway, here is the photo:

cedar city gateway to utahs national parks: Scenic Saturday...Yellow Flower.... - 09/17/11 07:22 AM
After admiring Roy Kelley's flower posts for a long time.  I guess it was time for me to stop and smell the roses so to speak.  This isn't a rose, even I know that, and I know so little about flowers!  It is a little bush near our backdoor.  It has held it's flowers all Summer, which has impressed me.  Anyway, in honor of all the beautiful flowers that Roy has shared with us, here it is!

I was surprised at how well it turned out.  I took it with my phone and not the camera.

cedar city gateway to utahs national parks: Parowan Area Events…Fall Equinox… - 09/17/11 07:09 AM

I have written several posts in the past about the Parowan Gap Petroglyphs.  Many theories abound that this location may have been an observatory for the Ancient Inhabitants of the area.  It is definitely an interesting location to explore.
On September 17th at 6 PM the Fall Equinox will be observed and celebrated in the Parowan Gap.  This should be an interesting event to observe.  For those unfamiliar on getting there, the easiest way is to turn off of Parowan’s Main Street at 400 North and just follow the road for 11 miles.

cedar city gateway to utahs national parks: Cedar City Events…Half Marathon… - 09/16/11 09:27 AM

The Cedar Canyon Half Marathon is September 17th.  Beginning at 7 AM at Woods Ranch at the top of Cedar Canyon and ending at the Main Street Park in Cedar City.
I am not a runner, if you don’t believe me, look at our picture, but this is a beautiful course to run if you are.  In my opinion the most appealing thing about the route aside from the beauty is that it a downhill run!
This is also a caution to those going up the canyon to pay close attention to the runners!  Be safe and share the road!

cedar city gateway to utahs national parks: Thumbs Up to the Utah Shakespeare Festival…Military Appreciation Night.. - 09/16/11 05:06 AM

In a time when it is so easy to point out what an institution and people do things that are wrong, I would like to point out one that is doing a very good thing.  The Utah Shakespeare Festival is hosting a Military Appreciation Night.
Tonight and tomorrow night anyone with a current Military ID can get free tickets to the play “Noises Off.”  This is even a better deal, up to 5 additional family members also get in for free!  This isn’t a discount.  This is free admission for up to 6 people!  What a great thing to do!

cedar city gateway to utahs national parks: Real Estate & Earthquake Zones...Getting Prepared #2............ - 09/15/11 04:56 AM
Continuing with the series that I started on living in an area with active earthquake faults.  I am going to link to the second part of the Getting Prepared things that you can do to make sure that you and your family will get through an earthquake with the best possible outcome.  If you're in a major earthquake and survive the intial damage, it is what you do to prepared before the earthquake that will help you better get through the ensuing days.  Here is the link: http://www.livingincedarcity.com/?p=3285

cedar city gateway to utahs national parks: Real Estate and Earthquake Zones...Getting Prepared #1 - 09/13/11 10:01 AM
There is so much information available to help you to be better prepared if you live in an earthquake zone.  This is the first of several posts on this subject.  None of this is an attempt to frighten anyone, nor is it meant to discourage you from living in an earthquake zone (that is if there is somewhere that isn't in an earthquake zone).  Most of this is pretty common sense, and there is nothing that is really difficult.  Here is the link to the blog:

cedar city gateway to utahs national parks: Real Estate & Earthquake Zones...More of the House..... - 09/11/11 02:34 PM
I haven't given up on this series.  This is a continuation of things that you can do inside the house to make it safer during an earthquake.  This stuff isn't rocket science, but it is stuff that you may do to help your family.  There are other things that you can do, including creating a plan in case of an earthquake.  That is a subject for another post.

cedar city gateway to utahs national parks: Cedar City Subdivisions..Legacy Estates...Market Update - 09/11/11 04:32 AM
The Cedar City Real Estate Market doesn’t have a lot of gated communities.  In fact Legacy Estates is our first and currently, only gated community in Cedar City.  This is a subdivision of Mansions.  It is a small subdivision in number, but not in size of the homes.  The entire subdivision is not gated, just the select mansions inside of it.  The subdivision its self is still comprised of custom or executive size and style homes.  This is an exclusive subdivisions  These homes don’t come up for sale very often.
The Subdivision was built in 2004.  There are currently no homes … (6 comments)

cedar city gateway to utahs national parks: Cedar City Subdivisions...Gemini Meadows..Market Update - 09/10/11 06:00 AM
I have taken a week or so off of writing market updates for the Cedar City Real Estate Market.  I need to stop that!  I get an idea for a thread of blogs and I want to just write about that thread rather than mixing things up better!
Gemini Meadows is one of the newer subdivisions in the Cedar City Real Estate Market.  Gemini Meadows is another Twin Home or Duplex subdivision in Cedar City’s limits.  It is at the Northern edge of the City’s boundary.  It is another of the subdivisions that was built during our building boom of 2007.  … (9 comments)

cedar city gateway to utahs national parks: Real Estate & Earthquake Zones...Inside the House - 09/09/11 05:12 AM
This is the first of the installments that I am writing about what we can do to try to minimize the damage, both to ourselves and our property.  Some of these are pretty simple and some many not be aesthetically appealling, but they will help.  Inside of your home you need to think about where you and your family usually are.
In our house we don't have young children, so I will probably never connect straps to the TV.  If we had small children and their favorite place to be was on the floor in front of the TV, then I … (4 comments)

cedar city gateway to utahs national parks: Real Estate And Earthquake Zones...... - 09/08/11 04:19 PM
I have had a lot of fun writing the last couple of series of posts, that and I really learned a lot from writing more than one post on the subjects.  This series is one that really affects large parts of the country.  The Earthquake that shook the East Coast and the Midwest is still fresh in our minds.  I am not trying to scare anyone, rather I am trying to show some things that people in Earthquake Zones can do to prevent earthquakes from being worse.
I have lived near an active fault nearly all of my life, and when … (11 comments)

cedar city gateway to utahs national parks: Life and Business Lessons that I Learned from Reading Louis L’Amour…Education - 09/08/11 05:39 AM

The lesson that I wanted to talk about in this lesson really comes more from Louis L’Amour’s writing method and then from his autobiography, “Education of a Wandering Man”.  His principle characters are generally very intelligent, and thirst for more knowledge.
In many of his novels he points out just how rare the printed word was in many parts of the Old West.  His characters have a hunger and thirst to read whatever they can find.  In his autobiography he often refers to his library as the “Well of Knowledge” and something that he would often dip into that well.
