Last Monday, Darcy and I went to downtown Salt Lake City. We stopped at Temple Square. I am going to share photos in a few blogs. Temple Square draws over a million visitors every year. It is less that 15 minutes from Bountiful. I have been there many times, it is a familiar place to me.

Even seemingly simple choice like where to camp at night could make all the difference in their daily survival. This is another thing that is directly applicable to our business. How many of us talk ourselves out of business? Too many, the essence of this post is that we have two ears and one mouth, we should use them in that proportion. This really is important! We really do need to be shut up and pay attention a lot more than we do. Let the client do most of the talking, they are the most important part of the equation anyway!

The idea behind this ideal is that along with having a strong charactor and having boundaries you belong to something other than just yourself. Often in the Old West a cowboy had a saddle partner. The movies portrayed this as a sidekick, but in reality it was more than either of those. It was the premise that you belonged to something other than just yourself. Whether it was as an employee at a ranch or just the team of you and your saddle partner, you were loyal to that organization regardless of how loosely structured that organization was. This comes from a time in history where deals were consumed with a handshake. There were no lawyers, no contracts nor paperwork needed for both parties to accept that a deal was done. In today's venacular this is being proactive. In the Old West it was if you noticed something that needed to be done, you did it. It didn't matter if it was in your job description, you just did it. It could have been something like a cowboy noticing that the gate or the door was sagging, rather than telling the boss that it needed to be done, he just fixed it. This goes back to the days of the cattle drives, cowboys didn't get paid until the drive was over and the cattle were sold. Their wages depended completely on the market condition and what the cattle sold for per head. Does that sound familiar? We are in a similar position, we don't get paid for showing houses or even for listing houses. We only get paid when the deal is done. Much like the Cattle Boss, we need to make sure that our product sells for a good price, a reasonable price, but a good price just the same.
