Come and join the Msgr. James E. Collins Memorial Choir of St. Dominic Church in Oyster Bay for the Tenebrae Service on Holy Wednesday, March 31 at 7:30 PM at St. Dominic Chapel. What is a Tenebrae Service? It is an ancient liturgy. Tenebrae is a latin word for shadow or darkness. According to St. Dominic Church bulletin, "Tenebrae is a dramatic way of tracing out progressively the struggles between the dark forces of sin and death that seems to extinguish the Light of the World. Tonight, I sang with the choir at the Tenebrae service at St. Dominic Church in Oyster Bay. What is a Tenebrae Service? It is a Service of the Shadows. Tenebrae is a latin word for shadow. It is the most moving service of the Holy Week. The purpose of the Tenebrae service is to recreate the passion story. The story is left unfinished because it is not over till Easter Day. This week has been a musical marathon for members of a choir like myself. We sang last week on Palm Sunday, then on Wednesday we did Tenebrae, then we sang at the Holy Thursday Mass, then sang again on Good Friday Mass and last night we sang at the Easter Vigil.
Tenebrae was a special service of prayers and songs. We used to do "Service of the Shadows" for Tenebrae but our new Choir Director decided to do something differently last year and this year. We had been doing the Shadows for the last 30 plus years. This year's Tenebrae was (2 comments)
