facebook: I’m Giving My Secrets And My Social Media To My Competitor - 02/13/16 03:41 AM
A few years ago, I was at a marketing strategy session with the owner of a restaurant group who is a client of ours.  He told me he wanted to run a special dinner where he taught his diners how to make his signature dishes.

His manager looked at him like he was nuts.

“Why the hell would you give away your secret recipe to everyone?” she asked.

“It’s simple,” he said.  “Not everyone likes to cook.  And nobody does it as well as I do.”

There was a tremendous lesson in this.

A few weeks later, he saw the footage and pictures we shot at … (41 comments)

facebook: How Facebook May Soon Crush Medium And LinkedIn - 10/05/15 01:52 AM
You need to start blogging on Facebook.  Because the social media giant is launching a subtle war on Medium and LinkedIn Pulse.  And if they make it sexy enough, they just might win.
It all goes back to the roots of Facebook – a little tool called Facebook notes.  It’s a tab that all but disappeared in recent years.  So why would they resurrect it now?
Simply put, Facebook is looking to create an entire ecosystem and keep you in it.  Don’t believe me?
Look at how Facebook has gone after YouTube with video integration.        Let’s not forget their purchase of … (108 comments)

facebook: New Video Features On Facebook - 08/23/15 11:27 PM
I've been harping on why you all need to start producing video for quite some time.
And I've been really bullish on why you need to upload that video directly to Facebook.
So I'd be a little remiss if I didn't keep you up to date on some new features for posting videos on business pages.
If you are familiar with the YouTube format for posting videos then you’ll have no trouble with this one.
The new features includes the ability to choose the following options:
Exclude videos from the News Feed and Timeline, and publish the videos only to the Page’s Videos tab Prohibit … (10 comments)

facebook: Custom Audiences On Facebook – Are You Niche Marketing? - 08/11/15 10:59 PM
Custom databases for niche marketing - are you blowing an opportunity to be in front of the right eyeballs?
It’s one of the more underutilized tools that I’ve seen in Facebook.  Today…let’s work on changing that to help streamline your advertising.
First of all, let’s establish something.  When it comes to marketing, you should stop mass marketing.  It’s wildly ineffective.
Think about it like this.  You run a traditional ad campaign.  You buy three different radio spots.  One is on a country station, one is on an AM station and one is on a Top 40 FM station.  Three entirely different demographics….yet you have … (12 comments)

facebook: Video Marketing: Facebook, Vimeo or YouTube? - 07/20/15 02:52 AM
Trying to figure out where you should be uploading your videos for social media?  Look no further.
You've produced some cool content for your business.  So where should you upload it?
There are plenty of articles out there discussing the merits of YouTube vs. Vimeo - but where does Facebook play into the equation?
I'll tell you were it SHOULD play in.  Right at the time.
For years, YouTube was the leader in video.  Owned by Google, it STILL remains a monster when it comes to engagement, virality and search engine optimization.
Vimeo rolled out as a powerhouse for a more niche demographic.  Higher quality, the … (20 comments)

facebook: Facebook Is Making A Major Change - Again - 07/16/15 01:14 AM

Growing up, I LOVED the Goosebumps series.  Gotta love scary stories.
I especially loved when they released “Choose Your Own Adventure” books.  At the end of a chapter, you had to make a decision.  That decision impacted what you read next.
Looks like Facebook is taking a page out of that book.
They’re now giving users more control over which friends and pages show up in their feeds.
Earlier this month, the social giant announced new controls to create a more custom flow of content.  You’ll see it rolling out in the next couple of weeks.  It marks a big change in a famously complex … (33 comments)

facebook: Where The Hell Did My Facebook Friends Go? - 06/29/15 03:55 AM
Are your friends randomly being unfriended on Facebook?  You're not alone.
It seems as if Facebook doesn’t like your relationships.
I didn’t really think much of it when I realized that some of my “friends” were no longer my “friends” on Facebook.  I just figured they couldn’t handle the heat of a little controversy in my posts.  God knows I’m not bashful when it comes to politics on Facebook.
It didn’t even hit me that something was up until some of my friends started giving me a hard time for allegedly “unfriending” THEM.
Let’s be clear about something.  I rarely, if ever, unfriend anyone.
I chalked … (13 comments)

facebook: Three Facebook Business Hacks You Need To Know - 06/18/15 01:03 AM

There are a few new tools in the Facebook business world that you need to use.  Here they are.
When your agency oversees the social media for hundreds of accounts, you learn a thing or two about what works and what doesn't work.
And when you spend tens of thousands of dollars a month on Facebook Dark Posts, you're forced to stay on your game to bring tips and tricks to your clients that others may not have discovered yet.
Today, I wanted to give you three little nuggets for utilizing Facebook for businesses that you may not have known about.
Try them.  Rock them.  And feel … (14 comments)

facebook: Facebook's Move That Could Crush Google's Ads - 04/09/15 10:19 PM
Well, it’s official.  Facebook is taking aim at Google.  And if a patent that they just applied for goes through, it was drastically reshape the entire concept of digital advertising.
Buckle up.  It’s time to go down a wormhole.
Our agency has been creating Facebook Dark Posts for more than two years now.  Finally, other agencies are starting to hear about them and experiment with them.  It’s about time.
Another powerful tool that Facebook offers is remarketing.  People visit your website…hit Facebook… and POW – there’s an ad for your brand trailing them.
But this patent indicates that Facebook is looking to take on Google … (13 comments)

facebook: Facebook Just Made YouTube Blink - Here's Why You Should Care - 04/04/15 12:03 AM

You’ve taken the giant step of creating video content to connect with your audience. But now what?
Until now, YouTube was the answer. But now the video giant is getting knocked around by Facebook and all of a sudden is on the defensive.
Last October, I wrote about how Facebook was starting to deliver a beating to YouTube.
In August of 2014, Facebook passed YouTube for the number of video views on desktop – delivering nearly a billion more views.
There were two caveats.
1) YouTube was still holding the title for mobile plays.
2) Facebook counted video views based on … (20 comments)

facebook: Ford Dealership Launches Chevy Intervention Social Media Campaign - 03/25/15 08:52 AM
I drive a Chevy. I always have. I come from a long line of Chevy drivers. I also come from a long line of people with a sense of humor.
That's exactly why I'm in love with this marketing campaign that a Ford dealership in Connecticut has launched. They rolled it out through Facebook today and are having a little fun at the expense of the "other" domestic dealerships.
Here's what they did. They created a series of short videos and are uploading them to Facebook one at a time. They're talking about it on social - #ChevyIntervention. They've purchased www.chevyintervention.com and have … (7 comments)

facebook: Facebook Lessons From A Dog Who Wrote A Book - 03/16/15 03:27 AM
The lesson I learned this week in marketing came from a dog.  And this dog is going to teach you a little about Facebook advertising.
He's not just any dog.  He's a dog that wrote an autobiography, which, from my perspective, makes him a pretty damn smart dog.
Rocky, The Autobiography of a Chipmunk Chaser, is actually the story behind a non-profit organization.  It’s about a dog who spent a lifetime chasing chipmunk.
“Rocky” described his book this way:
“Not only is it an incredibly funny book, it’s an invaluable people training book for dogs. If you are a puppy moving into … (6 comments)

facebook: Why Did My Facebook Followers Just Disappear? - 03/14/15 01:12 AM
Call it the “Penguin” update of Facebook. Finally the social media giant is getting smart about who it eats for lunch.
Many of you may have woken up this morning and looked at your Facebook business page in shock. Some of you may have lost a few followers. Others may have lost hundreds. Then there are those businesses that lost hundreds of thousands.
Why?
Because on March 12, Facebook “purged” brand pages from inactive likes.
Over the last couple of years, Facebook has been inundated with garbage likes and followers through external click-farms – usually that operate out of third world … (18 comments)

facebook: How My Facebook Friends Will Replace Your Brick and Mortar Store - 03/08/15 10:06 AM
If you are looking for a reason to drink, I highly recommend you go shopping for a couch.
It's perhaps the one consumer buying experience that has become progressively worse as technology has gotten better and better.
First...let's talk stats.  In an interesting article by Dana French of "Furniture Today", there's an examination of a study of 1,608 consumers talking about furniture buying.
According to this study, 78% of Millennials have purchased furniture and accessories online compared to 81% of Baby Boomers and 85% of Generation X. Looking further into the study, 65% of online buyers were happy.  39% of Generation X buyers … (8 comments)

facebook: Facebook Dark Posts: The Ultimate Consumer Insights - 02/23/15 08:20 PM
Buckle up. Today we’re going on a ride of hyper-targeting. I’m going to challenge everything you thought you knew about advertising. You’re going to want to call your marketing team in after reading this.
Last week, I was inundated with a mix of emails, phone calls and comments after I wrote a piece about Facebook Dark Posts. Some people wanted to learn more. Others called shenanigans, saying that Facebook advertising is a fail.
To those naysayers I say this. Facebook doesn’t fail. YOU do.
Let’s start really high level here. And let’s be fair. I’m not talking about targeting using the whole … (45 comments)

facebook: How Facebook Killed Our Class Reunion - 12/27/14 09:44 PM
I remember being excited senior year of high school when thinking about our future class reunion.  My excitement stemmed from a movie I had watched.  In the movie, the star was the ugly duckling growing up.  When he arrived at his class reunion, he was a rich hunk with a gorgeous bride.  I couldn't wait to be "that guy".  I also couldn't wait for all of the "popular kids" to show up at this future class reunion fat and strung out.  It was going to be GREAT.
As it turns out, I was entirely wrong.  NOBODY showed up at our class … (100 comments)

facebook: Why "Young" Real Estate Agents Are Going To Crush It - 12/18/14 11:24 PM
Young.  Is it about age...or is it about a state of mind?
I'd argue that it may be neither.
Since I was a kid, I've been told that I am an "old soul".  Yet now that I'm older, I like to think that I have a youthful perspective on business.
Let's face it.  As we get older, many people become jaded.  Their past failures begin to take over their lives and they are afraid to step outside the box.  They stick with what they know, even if what they know doesn't work.  It's time we all embrace that fresh-eyed college … (38 comments)
