marketing: I’m Giving My Secrets And My Social Media To My Competitor - 02/13/16 03:41 AM
A few years ago, I was at a marketing strategy session with the owner of a restaurant group who is a client of ours.  He told me he wanted to run a special dinner where he taught his diners how to make his signature dishes.

His manager looked at him like he was nuts.

“Why the hell would you give away your secret recipe to everyone?” she asked.

“It’s simple,” he said.  “Not everyone likes to cook.  And nobody does it as well as I do.”

There was a tremendous lesson in this.

A few weeks later, he saw the footage and pictures we shot at … (41 comments)

marketing: How We Scored The CEO of Blab - 01/25/16 08:37 PM
It's often a strategic combination of public relations and marketing that conquers the impossible.
2016 is shaping up to be the year of the live streaming video.  Facebook has formally launched Facebook Live for an expanded group of beta testers and will be rolling it out to everyone else later this year.
Meerkat and Periscope continue to battle for market dominance.
And then there's Blab.im - the live-streaming social media platform that's absolutely exploded...albeit a little more quietly.
Please tell me you've heard of it by now.  If you haven't...you need to get on this boat - now.  It's a platform that allows up … (3 comments)

marketing: American Touch Tag, Free Beer and Creative Marketing - 10/07/15 10:41 PM
In the world of real estate, there's a hell of a lot of noise.
Real estate agents try desperately to cut through that noise on social media.  One of the most common ways of doing it?  Tying in with a charitable cause.
You see it all over the place "Keller Williams is proud to support Breast Cancer Awareness Month" and so on and so forth.
The challenge is that for all of the good intentions, it's easy for your message to get lost in the noise of everyone talking.
So how can you differentiate your company?  How do you cut through that noise on … (14 comments)

marketing: The Dark Web And Your Marketing - What You Need To Know - 09/16/15 10:01 PM
The movie “The Matrix” examined a concept that the world isn’t what we believe it is.  But what if I told you that the internet isn’t what you believe it is?   What if I told you that you only see the surface of the web…and that 96% of it is actually “dark”?  Would it surprise you?  Would it scare you?  Would you even care?
You SHOULD care.  Because your marketing is no different.  Allow me to explain.
I’m referring to the “dark web”.  The “dark web” makes up 96% of all content on the internet, but it cannot be indexed.  Which means you’ll … (25 comments)

marketing: Stop Counting Words On Your Blog Right Now - 08/12/15 11:16 PM
The SEO "experts" are telling you it's time to focus on more words.  Here's why they are wrong. All of a sudden everyone is once again focused on the perfect length of a blog.
In the past week, I've seen one "expert" say 1,000 words.  I've seen another person say 1,500 words.  The third piece I read said 2,000 words.
What began as quiet whispers over word count turned into thunderous roars as the bloggers began scrambling for enough content to fill the enlarged hole.
So what is the IDEAL length of a blog?
Well that, my friends, is an entirely pointless question.
It's a pointless question … (87 comments)

marketing: Custom Audiences On Facebook – Are You Niche Marketing? - 08/11/15 10:59 PM
Custom databases for niche marketing - are you blowing an opportunity to be in front of the right eyeballs?
It’s one of the more underutilized tools that I’ve seen in Facebook.  Today…let’s work on changing that to help streamline your advertising.
First of all, let’s establish something.  When it comes to marketing, you should stop mass marketing.  It’s wildly ineffective.
Think about it like this.  You run a traditional ad campaign.  You buy three different radio spots.  One is on a country station, one is on an AM station and one is on a Top 40 FM station.  Three entirely different demographics….yet you have … (12 comments)

marketing: The One Marketing Lesson Everyone Needs To Learn From Trump - 08/09/15 11:36 PM
Love him or hate him - there's one lesson in marketing that every business owner and marketer needs to take from Donald Trump right now.
Today we're going to talk about Donald Trump.  Not the political hopeful.  But the marketer.
To do this, I need you all to put your personal feelings about him aside.
This isn't about Democrats vs. Republicans.
This isn't about the political arena.
This is about niche marketing.  And there's a lesson in it for all of us, if we're willing to step back and see it.  The lesson is especially powerful for entrepreneurs in this digital age.
The internet … (25 comments)

marketing: Autographs Die As Selfies Catch Fire - 07/28/15 11:37 PM

I’ll never forget the first time my dad took me to a baseball game.
Shea Stadium. I can still hear – and sing – their old theme song.
But the most exciting part of the game wasn’t the game itself. It wasn’t the peanuts or the crackerjacks. Nope.
It was the autographs.
Whether we were at an MLB game or a minor league New Jersey Cardinals game, the goal was the same: Bring a baseball and get as many player autographs as you can.
I found one of those old baseballs recently. Looking back on the ball with nostalgia, I realized something.
I can’t read a single … (28 comments)

marketing: Video SEO Tips You Need To Know - 07/22/15 11:37 PM

With all of this talk of search engine optimization, what actually works for SEO when it comes to video?
The numbers don't lie.  Video consumption is massive and it's grower bigger and bigger every day.  So why are so many marketers blowing it?
One big reason?  They don't understand a damn thing about video search engine optimization.
You don't want to blow the opportunities generated by video.  Did you know, for example, that 65% of people who watch business videos click through to visit their website after?
To be one of those businesses you need to optimize your search engine results as much as possible. Here … (18 comments)

marketing: Facebook Is Making A Major Change - Again - 07/16/15 01:14 AM

Growing up, I LOVED the Goosebumps series.  Gotta love scary stories.
I especially loved when they released “Choose Your Own Adventure” books.  At the end of a chapter, you had to make a decision.  That decision impacted what you read next.
Looks like Facebook is taking a page out of that book.
They’re now giving users more control over which friends and pages show up in their feeds.
Earlier this month, the social giant announced new controls to create a more custom flow of content.  You’ll see it rolling out in the next couple of weeks.  It marks a big change in a famously complex … (33 comments)

marketing: Dear Boomers. Maybe It's Time To Retire. Love, Millennials. - 06/10/15 12:15 AM

Dear Baby Boomer,
This is a message of love from a millennial.  I hope it doesn't hurt your feelings.  I simply want to suggest that maybe, just maybe, it's time to retire.  Call it quits.  Head out to pasture.
Perhaps it's time to throw in the towel.  Take a long walk down an empty beach.  Ride off into the sunset.
I'm not referring to all boomers.  Not by ANY stretch of the imagination.  I'm simply talking to those of you who have decided that this new world sucks and instead of trying to grow in it and navigate through it, you're fighting it.

marketing: HOW TO MARKET ON FACEBOOK WITH MICROBLOGS - 06/02/15 01:54 AM

Is microblogging on Facebook the key to cutting through all of the noise?
It seems as if everything is getting smaller this days.
Don't believe me?  Look at a carton of ice cream.  Bet you still thought you were getting a half gallon, didn't ya?
The whole concept of shortening things up created a multi-billion dollar player - Twitter.
So in an age where we seem to have more and more content out there for us to consume, is the answer in microblogs?
According to the National Center for Biotechnology Information, the average attention span of a human being has dropped from 12 seconds in 2000 … (42 comments)

marketing: This Marketing Initiative Might Make You Cry - 05/08/15 01:19 AM
Last week I told you all about our experience filming Superhero Day at the Connecticut Children's Medical Center.
Today, we're proud to announce that acclaimed artist Rachel Platten has partnered with us to help spread the word about these incredible little heroes.
Not long ago, Platten released a song called "The Fight Song".  It's inspired people all across the globe - including the little kids who were heard singing the song last week.  And so it became a fitting backdrop for a music video of sorts capturing all of the emotions on this special day.
The moments you're about to see may be difficult … (8 comments)

marketing: What Your Boss Is Stealing From You (And How To Get It Back) - 04/13/15 11:45 PM
I once knew a guy who rarely needed to go to the store.
Toilet paper.  Pens.  Bottles of water.  You name it.  If it was to be found in his office, it was also soon to be found in his house.
He was one of countless employees out there stealing from his company.
Last year, The Global Retail Barometer revealed that American retail staff actually steal more from their employers than crooks in the stores.  While shoplifters account for 37 percent of revenue lost...employees account for 43 percent.
According to the report, the majority of it is from sleight-of-hand at the register - canceling transactions … (7 comments)
