You can read about the Spring Garden Greenway Project over at DIGSAU's site, the beautification project that aims to turn the Spring Garden SEPTA station and underpass into a pedestrian promenade with street plantings, better lighting, and art installations. We're happy to know that the first step in this undertaking is already set for May 22. The Northern Liberties Neighbors Associations will plant 55 trees along the Spring Garden corridor, but they need some volunteers. Loft District is an area of new development found north of Chinatown. There is a cluster of lofts and condominiums here replacing the rowhomes that you would find elsewhere. Many students and young professionals populate the area. Café Lift and Prohibition Taproom serve polished comfort food to locals, and Thoreau is a vegetarian BYOB that brings seasonal, healthful dining to the area. Chinatown and Northern Liberties are a quick bike ride away. Further down Spring Garden beckons the Silk City Diner, which hosts DJ nights and adds to the streetscape. Brandywine East is a neighborhood at the eastern section of Spring Garden Street. This neighborhood is residential and is now popular with many Temple University students and artists who have migrated from the Loft District and Northern Liberties. Chinatown is a quick walk. The Community College of Philadelphia is a few blocks away. The Institute Bar is a local pub known for great beer and an upstairs whiskey bar. Other neighborhood destinations include Cafe Lift and Prohibition Taproom and excellent burritos at Jose's Mexican Food. It is amazing all the construction that is going on in the Spring Garden / Brandywine East area which is just a few blocks west of Northern Liberties and just a few blocks north of Chinatown and Center City.
