things to do: Sweet Pinhole Dreams in Old Kensington - 10/12/10 05:26 AM
It's a funny thing, but as a blogger, you automatically start to become more invested in photography, more so than you ever were before. Your blog can be extremely thoughtful and provocative, but if you don't have good photography, or any images at all, you're only putting in half the effort. In the current scope of things, when smartphones are equipped to shoot above standard point-and-shoot quality, there is no excuse. Anyone can take a decent shot, right? Maybe.
But there is still something about a person who has the ability to frame and execute their images so brilliantly that they … (1 comments)

things to do: Glassphemy in Old Kensington - 10/11/10 02:53 AM
Did you ever think you would spend an evening recycling and have a really good time?
Glassphemy is coming to the Crane Arts Building on October 12, and this installation/recycling center encourages you to bring your glass bottles and give it your best shot. Yes, they want you to throw your glass at it.
Sounds dangerous, but the 20-by-30 foot steel structure is designed to recycle your glass bottles and is made with bulletproof glass.
The project was conceived in Philadelphia by Macro Sea.
So whether you're blowing off some steam or just want to pretend you're pitching for the Phillies, … (1 comments)

things to do: Designers, Developers, and Decor Addicts: Don't Miss DesignPhiladelphia - 10/06/10 04:26 AM
Design. It's right there in front of us when we're buying a home. It's at the very front of our minds when we're trying to develop, remodel, or sell. And it certainly deserves a celebration and reflection all its own, right here in Philadelphia. We've posted about tomorrow evening's kick-off party at West Elm for DesignPhiladelphia, which runs from October 7 - 17. But we also wanted to mention a couple of other events that jumped out at us.
There are so many designers and experts in the city with exciting ideas and exhibits. If you are attending this year, which … (4 comments)

things to do: Cure for the Onslaught of Cold in Philadelphia - 10/04/10 10:26 AM
With the recent cold snap, we thought of a few ways to hang on to those warm, sunny feelings in the currently cloudy city of ours.
Cantina Dos Segundos is one of the most vibrantly-hued restaurants in the city and will instantly cheer you up. If you're no pushover, then it may take a zippy margarita or two before you peel off your jacket and make yourself comfortable in Northern Liberties' house of larger-than-life burritos and endless chips with two types of salsa. Which salsa is better, the verde or the traditional, is a heated debate if there ever was one. … (2 comments)

things to do: Philadelphia Fashion Week is Back - 09/29/10 04:07 AM
Another thing that makes Philadelphia special...We have a Fashion Week that is accessible to everyone...you don't have to be super connected in order to attend or worry about any fashionista attitude here.
Philadelphia Fashion Week has just released its schedule and we are proud to see some our local boutiques (Delicious Boutique, Arcadia, Carmelita Couture) mix with international talents (Allegri, Cold Method, WESC) for a four-day run of streetwear and couture, Philly-style.
It's also a chance to peek into the future of fashion and highlight some student designs from local universities - School Night is all ages with no liquor on-site … (2 comments)

things to do: Riverward Restaurant Week: Eatin' Good in the Neighborhoods - 09/17/10 03:28 AM
Have you dined in the River Ward lately? The restaurants of Kensington, Fishtown, and Port Richmond are teaming up for a week of special menus that define the flavors of these neighborhoods.
We all know that sometimes the only way to understand a region is to dine where they dine and to brush elbows at the table next to them. So whether it's the pierogies of Port Richmond or the sinus-clearing Pho soup at Thang Long Noodle in Kensington, you can learn something about the people who live there and maybe even find a true gem that you'll return for.

things to do: Ready for a Farmraiser Hoedown in Kensington? - 09/16/10 03:48 AM
These days, there's no need to travel that far to find a local farm. In fact, you don't even need your car and you'll be a block away from the Market-Frankford Line's Dauphin train station. Kensington's Emerald Street Urban Farm is throwing its 2nd Annual Farmraiser and Neighborhood Cookout on Saturday, September 18 from 2 pm to 9 pm. The event is sponsored by the East Kensington Neighbors Association (EKNA). All proceeds benefit the farm's goal to supply the neighborhood with fresh vegetables.
Now, unlike a traditional farmraiser, this event will have pizza from the farm's new cob oven and a … (0 comments)

things to do: Who's Down with TD in the NE? - 09/15/10 02:51 AM
The Great Northeast is part of Philly, too! Northeast is an often ignored section of Philly when we think of art and entertainment districts. It's typically characterized by slews of brick rowhomes, twins, Boulevards, Avenues, and large strip malls. But there is a lot going on NE...and we thought we'd give a little shout out to something new.
The only open mic night in the Northeast. Philadelphia, that is.
It's going down every Thursday from 8- 11pm at TD's Irish Pub at 7770 Dungan Rd. So gather your best Northeast accent and let it out there.
Well...we never though of the … (1 comments)

things to do: Philadelphia's OTHER Franklin Square - 09/14/10 03:56 AM
You may be familiar with Philadelphia's original Franklin Square, the historic Philly site at 6th and Race that's home to a miniature golf course and carousel. It's certainly worth a trip.
But did you know that there's another Franklin Square, just a few blocks over in Old City? With an entirely different concept? That would be the Franklin Square Boutique and Design Studio at 128 North 3rd St. Only a month old, the clothing and jewelry shop comes from two art school graduates, Maggie Copeland and Liz Burt. With reasonable prices, a mix of vintage and new, and their own line … (2 comments)

things to do: Opening Tomorrow: Three Potato Four. - 08/27/10 03:16 AM
We love the look of a few choice antique objects placed in a contemporary setting. At Three Potato Four, a home decor shop that opens tomorrow in Manayunk, you'll find such items along with vintage hardware, prints, signs, and more. The shop, which started out online, is located in an old mill along Shurs Lane, to add to the charm. It will be open on Fridays and Saturdays and by appointment only.

things to do: Who’s on 13th Street in Philadelphia? - 08/26/10 06:46 AM

What's to love about 13th Street? We can think of plenty, but it's nice to see that business owners Marcie Turney and Valerie Safran have turned it into a blog. We Love 13th Street is the blog's name, and it lists all of the inspiring duo's restaurants and shops. They have quite a few, so it makes sense for them to promote their destinations with one big love letter. Shall we count the ways?
Bindi - The yummy modern Indian BYO that heats up 13th St with a Thali Tuesday special for carnivores and vegetarians.
Barbuzzo - Set to … (5 comments)

things to do: A Toast to Fishtown: Penn Treaty's 5th Annual Champagne in the Park - 08/26/10 02:44 AM
On Friday, September 10, it's time to break out the bubbly for Penn Treaty Park's 5th Annual Champagne in the Park. Refreshments from Johnny Brenda's, Ekta, and others will be served and drinks will be flowing as live jazz music fills the air in celebration of the park and its future. Some of the ideas to improve the Fishtown riverside destination include a lighting project that would install solar powered lights and new playground equipment.

things to do: Philadelphia Gone Wild - 08/25/10 03:51 AM
So the news in Philadelphia has taken a turn for the wild lately, and we're over here wondering what on earth could be next? First, there was that blogger tax controversy, and then a story about a mobile cupcake truck being confiscated by L&I.
Well, in this ode to the wacky, the bonkers, the absolutely wild, we'd like to point out a couple of crazy yet POSITIVE new happenings in our neck of the woods.
It's no secret that Philadelphians love their burgers just as much as we go cuckoo for cupcakes. It was just a matter of time before Piazza … (5 comments)

things to do: We're Getting Sauced at A Full Plate's Annual Rib Cook-Off - 08/13/10 03:23 AM
Come September, Northern Liberties begins to smell a little bit like Memphis. Barbecue smells bombard the air.
We blame A Full Plate's Annual Rib Cook-Off for the invasion.

It's a neighborhood that is quite proud of its smoky food: Folks dig in over saucy plates at El Camino Real on Liberties Walk, further down it's barbecue syrup being drizzled over waffles at A Full Plate, a rack of ribs at N. 3rd. Everyone gets in on the action, with vegetarians who have plenty of options, local restaurants who claim they do it best, and amateur BBQ-lovers who are convinced their … (3 comments)

This event is right in tune with our current state of weather. The 90degreez Fashion World Tour brings an evening of fashion, art, music, and networking to Old Kensington to benefit the youth of the Kensington South neighborhood and the Kensington South NAC, a nonprofit organization that helps to improve the neighborhood.
On the runway, look for couture inspired from Brazil, Uganda, and other countries, with designers Genuine Gentlemen, Atal Stella Uganda, Eye Innovations eyewear, and others. things to do: Go Vertical at Philly’s Only Rock-Climbing Gym Right Here in Northern Liberties - 07/27/10 03:18 AM
There's a rock climbing gym in Philadelphia? Really? Oh, but surely it's on the Parkway or in Center City. What? It's in Northern Liberties?
When you blog enough about Philadelphia neighborhoods, you begin to think you know where everything is.
So when you find out that Philly does have a rock climbing gym and it is along the Delaware River on the Fishtown-Northern Liberties border, you feel like you should have known about it. Why aren't you a regular height-defying rock climbing marvel by now?
Right behind Yards Brewing, off the beaten path, stands Go Vertical, an indoor rock climbing gym … (3 comments)
