The historic lighthouse may just be a beautiful sight now, but it once served as a travel guide to many boaters and steamers that provided wood and bricks to the New Orleans area. The lighthouse keeper and their family would reside in the keeper's cottage as they tended to the lighthouse duties, greeted visitors, and welcomed home the residents of the area. The original lighthouse that was build in the early 1800's was damaged by cannon fire during the Civil War and rebuilt in the mid 1800's using some original debris gathered from the rubbish.
