Due to the major property damage caused by Hurricane Sandy, many are faced with value assessments that are no longer accurate.  There is a provision of law that could lead to lower assessments but there is a deadline to take action.
Under NJ law, property value is assessed based on the condition of the lot and buildings as of Oct 1st for the following tax year.  So 2013 property tax bills will be based on the value of the property as of Oct 1, 2012.

IRS announces Storm Sandy relief The IRS, which earlier extended filing deadlines for returns due on October 31, has announced additional tax relief for individuals and businesses affected by Hurricane Sandy. This includes postponement of various filing and payment deadlines that occurred starting in late October. Affected individuals will have until February 1, 2013, to file returns or make payments. This includes fourth-quarter individual estimated tax payments normally due on January 15, 2013. It also includes payroll and excise tax returns and accompanying payments for the third and fourth quarters, normally due on October 31, 2012, and January 31, 2013.

I received this yesterday and thought it would be of interest to all who have had Comcast service disruptions from Storm Sandy:
State law protects consumers from paying for cable television services during extended outages. Many of us have lost power and cable service after Hurricane Sandy and I encourage you to contact Comcast or your local cable provider if you lost service for at least six hours. Although cable providers must provide rebates, they are under no obligation to do so unless a customer requests one within 30 days. On November 9, 2012, Governor Chris Christie signed Executive Order 113 to extend the deadline for fourth quarter property tax payments  in calendar-year (those whose budgets expire on December 31st) and state fiscal year municipalities (those whose budgets expire on June 30th) from November 1st to November 16, 2012. In addition, Executive Order 113 also permits these municipalities to extend this grace period, by adoption of a resolution, to December 31, 2012.
