delaware valley: Philly + New Year's Day = Mummers Parade - 12/31/06 12:06 PM
Everyone from the Philadelphia and the Delaware Valley area knows that New Year's Day is the time for the annual Philadelphia Mummers New Year's Day Parade. Mummers and the annual Mummers Parade are unique to Philadelphia.  I know of nothing like it anywhere else.  Their sight and sound are distinctive.  Adults in elaborate customes march and strut through Philadelphia streets, many while playing instruments, to entertain us and welcome in the new year.    It you can not be one of the hundreds of thousands that regularly make it into the city each year to watch the parade, you can catch it on local TV 17. In addition to local … (2 comments)

delaware valley: Atlantic City - Concerts and Other Entertainment - 12/31/06 10:08 AM
On advantage living in South Jersey is the access we have to major music and comedy concerts and entertainment in Atlantic City.  Often, you may have several choices in a week or even several on the same day.  This goes on all year long. For example, my son and I decided to attend the recent Trans-Siberian Orchestra concert at the Atlantic City Boardwalk Hall, formerly the original Convention Hall, that has been upgraded for modern performances. We had an easy drive down to Atlantic City (under an hour) and parked in one of the many high-rise parking facilities, in our case Caesar's.  … (0 comments)

delaware valley: In Search of The Great Philly Cheesesteak - 12/21/06 12:20 PM

Everyone has a general idea of what is in a basic cheesesteak.  But, unless you're from or have visited the Delaware Valley area, few people know or understand the exquisite flavor, aroma and satisfying taste that only a true Philadelphia (or as more affectionately known, "Philly") cheesesteak can provide.  The basic ingredients create a synergy that is much more than the sum of it's parts.   As most people know, a basic cheesesteak consists of a bread roll, thinly sliced or shredded meat (usually beef, but now chicken is frequently offered, in which case it's called a chicken cheesesteak) grilled with onions and/or … (7 comments)

delaware valley: Underground Storage Tanks (USTs) - 12/16/06 03:55 PM

delaware valley: Delaware Valley: Historic Philadelphia - 12/07/06 03:59 AM
Independence National Park, home of the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall (where the Declaration of Independence and U.S. Constitution were signed), is located in Philadephia. A visit to the park is a great day trip (I prefer a weekend which has more parking options), but there are many other historic (tours, buildings and homes, such as the Betsy Ross House), cultural (exhibits, shows, theater, art, sports) and educational (museums, zoo, dinasaur exibit) places to see and events to experience that require a longer stay or more follow up visits. Many of the local hotels offer special weekend getaway packages. Here are some … (2 comments)

delaware valley: Delaware Valley - Winter Storm Preparedness - 11/26/06 08:13 AM
Winter is a great time to enjoy the recreational opportunities, holidays and events associated with the season.  Adequate protection for the coming winter storms that we will also experience requires preparing in advance for the effects of ice, snow and extreme cold.  "With the threat of snow, ice and severe cold now upon us, Pennsylvanians should prepare homes and vehicles with winter storm kits to assist their families in the event of a weather emergency," said PA's David Sanko.  "We all need to ensure that we're prepared to travel safely to our destinations or to alter our travel plans as needed. Besides the daily driving to our jobs, businesses and schools, the Delaware Valley has a tremendous amount of great opportunities for enjoying indoor and outdoor events, recreation, shopping and dining out during the winter season that will also expose us to potential winter driving hazards, such as ice and snow.  The leading cause of death during winter storms is transportation accidents. delaware valley: Delaware Valley - Identity Theft Protection - 10/18/06 04:26 PM
Delaware Valley state governments are actively developing and implement laws to protect the local individual against identity threats.  Just as with the federal government, the state governments are focusing on making it harder to illegally obtain identity information by requiring users and holders of identity information to maintain proper protection procedures.  Delaware Valley states passed tougher laws which went into effect during 2006.   It is important that you become aware and more importantly, become compliant with the new information security requirements.NJAccording to New Jersey's Office of Attorney General, the "Identity Theft Prevention Act," which took effect on January 1, 2006, is the most comprehensive and … (0 comments)

delaware valley: Agency Disclosure: Consumer Information Notices - 10/07/06 04:40 PM
One of the first requests that a consumer should expect to receive from a licensed real estate agent is a request to view and sign a Consumer Information Statement (also called a Consumer Notice, depending on state).State laws in the Delaware Valley (NJ, PA, DE and MD) require that all agents present a Consumer Information Statement (CIS) (or Consumer Notice) upon first contact with a real estate consumer.  The purpose is to inform and explain to the consumer about the different forms of agency relationship and what real estate office the agent is licensed under and representing.  The real estate codes/statutes … (0 comments)
