wilmington nc: Thankfully, Tropical Storm Andrea was gentle with us! - 06/07/13 08:56 PM
Thankfully, Tropical Storm Andrea was gentle with us!
After waking to hard rains and strong winds, we were pretty convinced it was going to be a rough day in Wilmington NC.  Thankfully, Tropical Storm Andrea was gentle with us. There were some downed trees and minor flooding, but all in all TS Andrea was kind to us here in the Wilmington NC area.
With 2 new listings to get ready I had no choice but to be out and about. Isn't that always the way?  It was interesting to drive through one area and have driving rains, only to go … (14 comments)

wilmington nc: Hurricane Season is upon us. Be Prepared! - 06/06/13 06:36 AM
Hurricane Season is upon us.  Be Prepared!

As Tropical Storm Andrea heads toward Wilmington NC, bringing rain and winds, some of us are realizing we still have a few things to do to prepare for Hurricane Season 2013.  It's not too late, but if we don't hustle our bustle it will be!  In fact, as I write this the rain has really started to pour and the winds are picking up.
First, please check your insurance coverage.  Even if you don't live in a flood zone you need to be certain that you have the right coverage to help … (8 comments)

wilmington nc: New Construction Porch Roof - Shimmed And Glued. And The Beat Goes On - 02/27/13 05:42 PM
Here in the Wilmington NC area we have some of the best builders I've ever known.  But that doesn't mean you should skip a home inspection when purchasing a new home.  Short cuts are just one of the things a Home Inspector can find -- you deserve to be protected when purchasing a home, so even if it's brand new -- get a home inspection!
I'm not sure why I continue to see this kind of work, the new construction front porch roof - shimmed and glued.  And the beat goes on.
Certainly I am at the point of wondering if … (0 comments)

wilmington nc: 1st Annual Bowling for Backpacks Saturday March 2, 2013 Wilmington NC - 02/27/13 05:29 AM
1st Annual Bowling for Backpacks Saturday March 2, 2013 Wilmington NC

A backpack is a lifeline for a homeless person – most of what they own is in their backpack.  That’s a concept most of us can’t even imagine.
This Saturday March 2, 2013, you can help The Good Shepherd Center make a difference in the lives of homeless people in our area.  Bring an empty backpack, a full backpack or just items to help fill backpacks to Cardinal Lanes Beach Bowl at 7026 Market Street in Wilmington and then stick around for a fun afternoon of bowling.

Footprints in the Sand A Spring Celebration
May 19, 2013 Wrightsville Beach NC
I've always felt that Charity Begins at Home and never is this point driven home more for me than when I learn of all those being helped by The Good Shepherd Center here in Wilmington NC.
The Good Shepherd Center has been feeding the hungry, sheltering the homeless, and fostering the transition to housing here in the Cape Fear Region for 30 years.  And while I hate that there is a need for them; I am thankful for the staff, the volunteers, and those who donate … (6 comments)

wilmington nc: Lynyrd Skynyrd in concert at Azalea Festival 2013 - 02/24/13 02:46 AM
Lynyrd Skynyrd in concert at Azalea Festival 2013

I'm pretty excited about this one, folks! My husband was a huge Lynyrd Skynyrd fan and thanks to him I came to be one as well. Oh, don't worry friends, I'm still the same Tish you've always known; a dyed in the wool Brenda Lee and Johnny Mathis fan. But when it comes to Southern Rock few do it as well as Lynyrd Skynyrd.  Did you know that the man they named the band after, Leonard Skinner, went on to sell real estate after he left teaching?  Just a little useless piece … (11 comments)

wilmington nc: This year I'm giving my family and myself the gift of memories - 11/28/11 02:47 AM
This year I'm giving my family and myself the gift of memories I don't know about you, but I've got more "stuff" than Carter has liver pills.  And as much as I like my "stuff" I feel no need to add to it.  For one thing, there's no room.  For another, I don't need it.  Maybe it's just me, but it seems like Christmas has become more work and less fun.  I have no desire to spend 30 minutes looking for a parking space only to fight the crowds, spend more money than I need to, pull my back out carrying … (25 comments)

wilmington nc: Take a drive and find a little fun in NC! - 09/18/11 02:20 AM
Take a drive and find a little fun in NC!
Something about this time of year always makes me want to take a drive and do a little adventuring.  Maybe it's the cooler weather, maybe it's the free time after a wonderfully busy Summer or maybe it's just that my natural wanderlust kicks in this time of year.  Whatever the reason, just about every weekend I'm off in search of something new to experience.  It may be a festival, a dive diner that serves the BEST pancakes, a "Junque" store with treasures that take me back to my childhood, or a … (12 comments)

Avast ye, weigh anchor and hoist the mizzen!  Cape Fear Museum Presents PIRATES!
Who hasn't wondered what life on the high seas was like when the Pirates ruled the waters?  When the most fearsome stalked the waters and took what they wanted with nary a thought for the law?  When Blackbeard wasn't a legend, he was alive and roaming the ocean in search of victims?
The Pirate exhibit at Cape Fear Museum in Wilmington NCfeatures close encounters with a motley crew that ruled the waters from the Carolinas to the Caribbean.  Learn about Blackbeard, Stede Bonnet and others.  Learn pirate games, learn the language … (6 comments)

wilmington nc: 2011 Kids Summer Stock - 05/31/11 10:06 AM
2011 Kids Summer Stock
An email from my Cheeky Assistant inspired this post.  She wrote;
"Do me a favor, write a post about the 2011 Kids Summer Stock Event.  I don't have google juice and you do, and I know you don't mind using it for a good cause.  So would you?"
YOU BET!  This is a cause I can get behind -- helping to feed kids who would otherwise go hungry this summer.
Kids Summer Stock is sponsored by the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina and this is it's 4th year.  Their efforts during this six-week … (8 comments)

We're on a bit of a Summer kick here in the Wilmington NC area!  I don't think my grandchildren are as excited as I am about the end of the school year -- I can hardly wait for all the adventures we're going to share this Summer.  From beach festivals, strawberry and blueberry picking, FREE birding tours, fishing, leisurely bike rides, shopping at our Farmer's Markets or just hanging out at the beach, we're going to have an awesome Summer 2011!  And guess what?  One of my all-time favorite places is helping to kick-off Summer with Splash into Summer!
