   2% Rental Tax The City of Tucson is looking at ways to increase its revenue for the 09/10 budget. Because of an unforeseen shortfall the Mayor and Council asked a committee of various city staff to make a recommendation for new revenue streams. The committee came back with $20 million worth of new taxes including a 2% tax on all residential rental property which would bring in an estimated $12 million. There's been a lot of focus on the Economic Stimulus package lately...and whatever happens, effects will take some time to be felt on a local level.  Why wait?  Why not see what can be done without Congress...and take charge of our own economic recovery on a local level?
This afternoon in El Presidio Park, a couple hundred people gathered to rally support behind a proposal to put a moratorium on some of the impact fees builders are charged by the City of Tucson.  Check out the short version of video I shot at the rally:

Grant Road - one of Tucson's busiest East-West arterial streets, is going to become 6 lanes wide in the future.  Tucson City Council approved plans to add a lane in each direction by a 6-1 vote on January 13th.  The Grant Road Improvement Plan has been in the works since the passage of the RTA (Regional Transportation Authority) plan in May 2006.

Last year, the Tucson City Council unanimously voted to approve building a new 12,300 seat arena downtown as part of a plan including new hotels, to invigorate the ongoing redevelopment in the area. 
Now, new figures on the cost of said arena show a price tag of $196 million, and the sparks have begun to fly as the entire project is re-examined.  Some want the idea of redeveloping the current Tucson Convention Center (TCC) back on the table while others deride the thought as "awful" or a "band-aid" solution.
