Tomorrow, Saturday, October 15th, will mark the 5-year anniversary of Dan Wheldon’s death in a fiery car crash during an Indy car race in Las Vegas. In honor of Dan, I would like to repost an essay I wrote a week after his death. Rest in peace Dan, and may God watch over your wife, Susie, and your two sons.

People Plan… Go ahead finish it…people plan, God laughs. We have all heard that saying a million times over. We know its meaning. We know that it is meant to convey the foolishness of making elaborate plans for our lives when things could change on a dime…because God controls the universe…not us. Yet we know we must plan. We know that we simply can’t go through life helter-skelter. So life becomes sort of a balancing act. This coming Sunday, Indy car drivers will climb inside their car’s cockpit to compete in the world’s most renowned auto race; the Indianapolis 500. There will be one driver missing, and his absence will be felt by all who love the sport of auto racing. Dan Wheldon, last year’s Indy 500 winner, won’t be there…and the hole left in the heart of auto racing is immense. Dan was killed in the final race of 2011, in a fiery 16-car crash in Las Vegas.
