thomas craig: Identifying the Person Holding Back Your Career - 12/31/14 01:16 AM
Identifying the Person Holding Back Your Career
OK…the minute you read the headline you knew who I was going to identify as the person holding you back from achieving your dreams. Collectively, let’s all say it together. Ready? One, two, three…the number one person holding me back in my career is…MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!
I am a big advocate of self-help tapes, CD, videos, and books which provide valuable information on how to be successful.  Without exception, they all say that we sabotage our careers more than anyone else. We know that instinctively. We didn’t need to spend $25 to have Tony Robbins tells … (0 comments)

Holding Yourself Accountable: The Saga of the Cleveland Browns and Johnny Manziel
I love following sports because it is a microcosm of what is right…and what is wrong with today’s society. How we “play” on a field often mirrors how well we play with others off the field.
Oh, us poor souls who grew up following Cleveland sports teams. We have been forced to look at the bigger picture, to ponder the philosophical aspects of the game; because nothing good rarely happens on the field. We have been forced to find the silver lining some place besides the old ballpark. Sadly, … (22 comments)

thomas craig: As Time Goes By - 12/18/14 05:21 AM
As Time Goes By
Last night, my wife and I attended the calling hours of our former dentist.  Actually, he was more than just our dentist. He was once our neighbor, and friend. Andy and his wife, Joyce, lived a street over from us. All the homes built on the final two streets of the neighborhood were all built within a few months of each other. As a result, a bunch of thirty-something couples and their kids all moved in at the same time. We all aged together, our kids grew up together, and friendships began that have lasted thirty-plus years. … (2 comments)

What's it all about, Alfie?
You have to be working your way towards retirement to have any idea what this headline means...or you have to be a movie buff with a passion for old movies.
I was following the breaking story of the terrorist attack in Pakistan in which at least 130 people were gunned down today by a murderous bunch of monsters. Couple that with the hostage situation in Australia which took place yesterday, or the hundreds of other senseless acts of violence occurring on a daily basis and I silently said to myself, “What’s it all about?” Habit had … (2 comments)

The Media’s Fascination With Pope Francis
I use Yahoo as my web browser, and I find it interesting that there usually are 4-5 articles each day about Pope Francis’s comings and goings. Pope Francis said this…Pope Francis is coming to the United States…the Pope did this… the Pope did that…the Pope said pets go to heaven too.
I am Catholic, so I am naturally inclined to check these stories out, as they are of interest to me. There are a ton of us Catholics, so I understand the media’s need to report on his activities. However, I don’t remember Pope … (2 comments)

thomas craig: A Very Strange Listing Appointment - 12/08/14 05:22 AM
A Very Strange Listing Appointment
Over the weekend, I was involved in a very, very strange listing appointment. I had received a phone call asking if I could go out to a home in the country and inspect it and get back to the owner about what it might be able to be listed for.  It seems that the home had been in the caller’s family for many, many years. It had served as the family’s summer home; which sort of baffled me. Now, I could see if the home was located on the shores of Lake Erie…but it wasn’t. It … (8 comments)

Don’t Leave Anything on the Table!
From time to time, I skim back over my blog to sort of get a feel of the direction I am heading with this thing. I don’t really have a goal in mind when I write. Many times, something just pops in my head during Mass on Sunday, and I begin to formulate how I want to approach the subject, and away I go. I don’t have an audience in mind, other than God. It really makes no difference to me if anyone even reads my post. My blog is just a way of formally … (2 comments)

Savor Every Holiday Moment
Christmas is right around the corner, and if your household is like mine, there is tremendous hustling and bustling going on in anticipation of Christmas morning. I have a thirty-something son, who is our family’s version of Peter Pan. Christmas is for him, is exactly the same as when he was 4-years old. He loves Christmas. He is a joy to behold. A more kind, or giving, or loving person you won’t find on our spinning planet on Christmas day. His joy is contagious. Michael will be calling us around 6:00 Christmas morning summoning his mom and … (2 comments)

Be Kind to One Another
My wife and I were on a Southwest flight this past Wednesday, heading to Tampa to spend Thanksgiving with two of our sons.  The flight attendant on the flight was really funny, and actually made the normal “vital flight information” about how to wear your seat belt, or how to use your seat cushion as a flotation device worth listening to. She had some great one-liners…but I thought the best line from her comedy set was when she ended with, “Please sit back and enjoy your flight…and don’t forget to be kind to one another.”
Here … (2 comments)

thomas craig: I’ll Be Home For Christmas - 11/18/14 02:30 AM
I’ll Be Home For Christmas
Ah...it’s the Christmas season, and many radio stations have already begun playing Christmas music...well before the usual starting date of the day after Thanksgiving. While I hate the thought of everyone rushing the holiday season in an effort to enhance sales, and money changing hands...I do enjoy the music.
In my car this morning, I heard the song, “I’ll Be Home For Christmas”. This song has probably been recorded by every musical artist who ever did a Christmas Album. The song was recorded way back in 1943, by Bing Crosby. It was a tribute to … (0 comments)

thomas craig: The Life of Matthew Stanford Robison - 07/28/14 12:22 AM

My wife’s cousin posted this picture and story to his Face Book page, and the picture took my breath away. I have a smidgen of artistic ability…just enough to appreciate a real artist’s efforts…but not enough to actually have someone want, or buy my work.
Great art is more than just a representation of something, or someone. Art should cause an emotional reaction, or connection. Millions have stood in front of the Mona Lisa trying to determine what that upturned corner of her mouth meant. Speculation to its meaning continues on, even to this very day.
While this sculpture is no Mona Lisa, … (28 comments)

thomas craig: Whether You Think You Can... - 07/21/14 04:43 AM
Whether you think you can…
The headline for today’s post is borrowed from Henry Ford. The complete quote is, “Whether you think you can, or think you can’t—you are right.”
Those of you who pump tons of positive thoughts in your head in an effort to excel in your personal life or your professional life; will be most familiar with Mr Ford’s quote. The point of the statement is this…many times we control the outcome of events in our lives by how we approach the problem.
I heard something over the weekend that just blew me away. It is in the … (6 comments)

thomas craig: Being The Best You Can Be - 07/16/14 03:20 AM

Being the Best You Can Be
Back in April of this year, I wrote a post about my nephew, Zach, entitled, “Working To Be Exceptional”. In the post, I chronicled his efforts and hard work in pursuing his dream to become an Olympic skier.
My niece, Tina, saw him off at the airport the other day. At 16, she watched him leave home to head out west to chase his dream. She wrote the following post on Face Book, and I thought it so profound, I thought there might be a teachable moment for all of us…regardless of our age.

If I Could Save Time in a Bottle
My dear Rabbi friend in Israel sent me the following YouTube link, and I must say…it brought a tear to my eye. Perhaps you have seen it?  It is a video of a series of photos of a little girl named, Lotte, taken from the little girl’s birth up to the age of 14. There are dozens of portrait photos, all taken from the same vantage point, for each year of the girl’s life. In just the few minutes it takes to watch this video, you see this little girl magically transform from … (4 comments)

thomas craig: Steph, Happy Valentine's Day! - 01/24/14 03:59 AM
I was trying to figure out what to do for my wife this year. This December 20th, my wife and I will celebrate our 45th wedding anniversary…so that is a whole lot of Valentine’s Day gifts given over the years. Frankly, I am running out of ideas. There are only so many boxes of candy, bouquets of flowers, pieces of jewelry to give…different restaurants to try; before they all just sort of run together. My wife may beg to differ…to her, a woman can NEVER have enough jewelry.
Anyway, as I am driving around in my car, the song Make Someone … (2 comments)

thomas craig: The Life and Death of Dennis McGuire - 01/20/14 12:22 AM
The Life and Death of Dennis McGuire
Dennis McGuire died suddenly…or not so suddenly depending on who you talk to, at the hands of the state of Ohio Thursday, January 16th at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility in Lucasville, Ohio. Mr McGuire was executed for the 1994 rape and murder of 22-year old Joy Stewart, who was 7 months pregnant at the time of her death.
What is making national headlines is that it took Mr. McGuire substantially longer to die from lethal injection because Ohio was forced to use a 2-drug lethal combo instead of the 3-drug combo they had … (0 comments)

thomas craig: Martin Luther King Jr. Day - 01/19/14 10:29 PM
In honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, I thought I would share with you a post I wrote a while back, when we celebrated the 50th anniversary of Dr. King's famous "I Have A Dream" speech. I hope you enjoy...
Dr. King…I Have a Dream
A couple of weeks ago we celebrated the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech.  King stood on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial before a crowd of 250,000, and a television audience numbering in the millions on August 28, 1963, to deliver a speech that is easily one of … (2 comments)

I don’t know how many of you watched CBS’s 60 Minutes  this past Sunday, but they had on a segment  entitled, The Life and Death of Clay Hunt. I have supplied you the link, please take 10 minutes out of your busy schedule to watch this…http://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=50142077n (Sorry, you will have to watch a commercial first…but it is a small price to pay.)
Shame on me…I knew the suicide rate was high among veterans…but I had no idea…I dare say, you didn’t either. Perhaps having a name and face added to the statistic made it resonate with me. Here it is Wednesday, … (4 comments)

thomas craig: The Overwhelming Gift of Forgiveness - 06/06/12 12:05 AM
The Overwhelming Gift of Forgiveness
I was watching Joel Osteen’s television show a couple of Sunday’s ago and he was talking about forgiveness. During his presentation, he quoted from Mark 16:7, in which the women standing near Christ’s empty tomb on Easter morning were told by an angel to, “Go, tell His disciples, and Peter.” Osteen’s sermon then centered in on the fact that Jesus, through the angel, wanted to let Peter know that he had been forgiven for denying 3 times that he knew Jesus.
If that weren’t enough…a couple of hours later, I am sitting in my pew at … (8 comments)

Thomas Kinkade: The Painter of Light, Spent His Last Few Years Living In Darkness
The autopsy report was just released for Thomas Kinkade, who passed away in his home on April 6th. Kinkade was just 54 years old. According to his live-in girlfriend, he had been drinking heavily the night of his death. The coroner’s report revealed "a lethal level" of alcohol, combined with benzodiazepine, the anti-anxiety medication known as Valium.
Kinkade’s final two years of his life were in stark contrast to how he had lived his earlier years. Kinkade had become a fixture in the bar scene over the … (6 comments)
