You may be hearing from your mortgage company that your property is in a flood zone - and that you need flood insurance right now! In a nutshell, FEMA has issued new flood maps for Tallapoosa County. Purchase FEMA Flood Insurance (available through most insurance agents) 2. Hire a surveyor or civil engineer to do an elevation survey and apply to (0 comments)
lake martin: Lake Martin is an Official Alabama Treasure!
- 01/10/11 03:23 AM
Area residents have always known that Lake Martin is a treasure. Now it’s official! Governor Bob Riley and the Alabama Department of Environmental Management have declared that Lake Martin is a Treasured Lake. This is a new designation created by ADEM and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency that will apply to lakes that meet special quality standards for cleanliness and nutrient enrichment. Actually, the Governor signed an executive order creating the designation Treasured Alabama Lake. And, Lake Martin is likely the first lake in the state to achieve this status. While this is great news for Lake Martin, it’s just (5 comments)
lake martin: Friends and Neighbors
- 09/29/10 09:50 AM
Your friends and neighbors are not always what they seem. For example, if your community is protected by a volunteer fire department there is a good chance that one of your neighbors serves the community in this capacity. Here on Lake Martin we say “when you call 911, you’re calling your neighbor”. Volunteers probably have a “real” job doing something totally unrelated to fighting fires or answering medical emergencies. But when the call goes out, even at four o’clock in the morning, they respond. These organizations always need help. If one is in your neighborhood, think about lending a hand. (0 comments)

lake martin: Happy Memorial Day – Rain or Shine!
- 05/24/09 10:04 AM
Lake Martin is full and open for business as the official summer season begins this weekend. Road traffic is heavy, stores are busy, boat ramps are in use, and marinas are selling lots of stuff from gas to potato chips! While many family gatherings have been dampened a bit with frequent rain showers, folks are still on the water having a good time. After all, if you’re swimming , skiing, tubing, fishing, or otherwise playing in the water –a little rain can’t hurt! People at the lake always make the best of it when a holiday weekend comes around.

lake martin: It's that time again...again!
- 11/21/08 05:01 AM
The holidays are upon us and the shoreline at Lake Martin is beginning to show. Those who love this lake are especially thankful for the high water levels throughout the spring, summer and fall. Alabama Power Company has done a great job of managing and maintaining the lake level this year and their efforts are appreciated. According to news reports, the folks at Lake Lanier, Lake Allatoona and Lake Hartwell will suffer extremely low water levels for years to come as the City of Atlanta continues to draw from these reservoirs. When added to the drought conditions in the southeast, this (0 comments)

lake martin: Making Memories at Lake Martin
- 07/25/08 01:42 AM
Lake Martin is all about families. We were lucky enough to have both of our children and their spouses here for a few days last weekend. What a pleasure to see them all enjoying the lake as much as they did as kids. There was plenty of time for swimming, skiing, digging for fishing worms, catching fish, getting some sun, and cooking out. Speaking of lucky enough…we were fortunate to find our place at Lake Martin when our kids were young. We came every weekend winter and summer and we spent hours fixing up our old cabin. lake martin: Real Estate Reality Check at Lake Martin
- 07/01/08 04:10 AM
A recent article in a Real Estate magazine really said it all – paraphrased: ...we feel younger than our age; we weigh less than the scales indicate (if we ever got on them); we feel fine – so there’s no need to go to the doctor...In terms of real estate prices in the Lake Martin area, we may all need a reality check! Sellers naturally believe their property is valuable. Here’s the bad news - it’s only worth what a buyer will pay. In 2007, sales at Lake Martin were not as brisk as in previous years and many blamed that (0 comments)

lake martin: What about a Condo at Lake Martin?
- 04/24/08 06:09 AM
Several years ago, I heard someone say that Lake Martin isn’t really the place for condos and they’ll never catch on here like they have at the beach. Wrong!
We have several condominium complexes on the lake and these appeal to a certain group of buyers who don’t want to do any chores such as cutting the grass, repairing the dock, patching a leaky roof, etc. They just want to enjoy the lake! In addition to having a place that requires little upkeep, some buyers are interested in earning a few dollars in rental income. Many of the condo units (0 comments)

lake martin: Lake Martin HOBOs need you!
- 08/01/07 02:07 AM
The HOBOs Board of Directors first meeting was held this week. In order to achieve some of the goals (water quality, water level, shoreline development/zoning, lake cleanup, etc.) a number of committees are being formed. Further, the lake has been divided into 12 areas. Each area needs an Area Manager to recruit new members, maintain good relations with the community, and carry out the various action plans for HOBOs. You can help by joining as an individual, a family, a business, or a sponsor. Serving on a committee or as an Area Manager will be rewarding and not too time consuming! (0 comments)

We have something for everyone at Lake Martin - you just have to find it...and you may not be able to do it alone. Probably the hardest thing for first-time visitors to understand is that you can't just drive around and see the lake. We're in a hilly, heavily wooded area. The only time you can really see Lake Martin is when you're driving across one of our three major bridges or parking in someone's driveway! What's most important?
