active rain: Getting Started with Blogging - 01/21/18 12:00 PM
Like most endeavors, a little planning goes a long way.  Blogging is no different.  If you're serious about blogging, a little upfront education on the more effective ways to Blog can pay big dividends later.

For the basics, try the FREE Kindle version of "How to Start a Blog Today: A Free Step-by-Step Beginner’s Guide to Create a Blog in 20 minutes".  A quick search on Amazon.com for "how to Blog" or "advanced Blogging" lists many choices and reader ratings of each.

Another way to get up to speed quickly on Blogging is to read the most popular blogs.  This gives you a … (16 comments)

Yesterday Suzanne and I attended an Active Rain Meetup in the East Valley hosted by Brian England !

The event was held at a "MAD Greens" restaurant - part of a chain of "salad restaurants" that has multiple locations in the Phoenix metro area, this was our first experience in dining there.

I opted for a Ty Cobb Salad: Romaine, Avocado, Bacon, Red Onions, Grilled Southwestern Chichken and Blue Cheese Dressing!

In attendance were Brian England (our gracious host), Suzanne Marriott and Tony Marriott, Mike Jones , Steffy Hristova , Jan Green  and Cari Sparks ! See Brian's post about the event for photos of all of us!

Apart from the great food served by MAD … (10 comments)

active rain: A Great Tucson Active Rain Meetup - August 2017! - 08/21/17 06:24 AM
Last Thursday Suzanne and I attended an Active Rain Meetup in Tucson, Arizona - about a two and a half hour drive from our home in Anthem, Arizona!

Allie Angeloni and Roger Angeloni graciously hosted the event at a "First Watch" restaurant - part of a chain of breakfast/lunch restaurants that has multiple locations in the Phoenix metro area, so we were familiar with the menu!

I had my "usual" - a modified "Skillet Hash - Parma":

Two cage-free eggs* any style atop fresh, seasoned potatoes, Italian sausage, house-roasted Crimini mushrooms, onions and tomatoes with melted Parmesan, Mozzarella and fresh herbs. Served with whole grain artisan … (6 comments)

active rain: Some Thoughts On Reblogging... - 02/18/17 05:06 AM
Some of us do, some of us don't.

Either is of course completely OK.

I'm one that does.

Re-blog that is.

Why do I do it?

Primarily to highlight a post that resonates with me, and that I think should get the additional exposure.

It's my way of "Featuring" that post.

Many members who visit the re-blog leave a comment along the lines of "Thanks for re-blogging - missed this the first time around - heading over to the original to comment".

Why do I do it consistently?

Daily.

Sometimes more than one per day.

It's part of my Active Rain routine.

First stop on my daily Active Rain tour is usually Q&A.

active rain: How YOU Can Choose A Post To Be "Featured"! - 12/21/16 03:45 AM
I have read many questions here in the 'Rain about how posts that are "Featured" are selected - who does it - what causes them to feature it - etc.

There is one way that YOU - the individual member here in the 'Rain - can choose a post to be "Featured".

A completely unilateral action on your part.

You can "Re-Blog" a post to spread the word and bring the post to the attention of those who "follow" you!

There are limitations - not every post offers the option to "Re-Blog" - but most do - and there is a wealth of valuable information … (10 comments)

active rain: From Zero To Rainmaker! - 12/13/16 04:49 AM
Bob Stewart mentioned in a response to a question in the Q&A (I believe) some time ago that Active Rain consistently has new sign ups every day - some more than other - but almost always in significant double digits.

Of those, I don't know how many opt to be a paid Rainmaker until they reach the magic 500,000 points mark, nor do I know what percentage really engage here in the 'Rain.

For those of you who are new to Active Rain, and intend to attain Rainmaker status by virtue of points, here are a few tips that may help you on your … (20 comments)

active rain: Marketing Makes The Rain Drops Fall!! - 08/21/16 11:46 PM
This is our entry for:

End of Summer going into FALL Market ME Contest

I found this more challenging than most Active Rain contests because it required me to get up to speed with Instagram - something I had not been using - and I learned that it could only be done using my iOS device - at least not on my iMac - so the small screen and large fingers were also a challenge!

#1. Per contest instructions, I set up an Instagram account and linked it to my Twitter account (thank you Lauren for instructions in Comment #31).
Here are the pictures … (22 comments)

active rain: Social Media Success Story - 07/06/16 07:08 AM
This is our entry into the "We Want To Hear Your Biggest Social Media Success Story" Contest.

A few days ago I published a post: Referrals In The 'Rain - Mid Year Update

The title is self explanatory - the post was about referrals we had received so far this year from other Active Rain members by virtue of our participation on this Social Media site - Active Rain!

Not included in that was a mention of another listing transaction we currently have, that resulted purely and simply from a Homeowner coming across something we had written over the past years, and as a result, … (22 comments)

active rain: Referrals In The 'Rain - Mid Year Update - 07/04/16 12:43 AM

For the period January - June 2016 we have received four "referrals" from four different Active Rainers.

Two of them turned out to be "non-starters" - which is par for the course.

Of the other two, one is a "solid Buyer".

The other - a listing.

Both at price points in our target market.

Another instance proving the value of Active Rain participation.

We have not, so far, reached out to other 'Rainers to ask for referrals.

These came our way based on interaction in the Q&A, and on Blog Posts and comments.

Our referral "policy" is straightforward.

1. We have a discussion with the "referring" party to determine if … (42 comments)

active rain: A Newbie Stumbles Out Of The Gate... - 06/15/16 05:47 AM

I know it's not easy being a Newbie.

I was once.

Back in late 2006.

And Active Rain was in it's infancy, and encouraged many activities for points - one such being Localism - which I devoted so much effort to that the leaders on the leaderboard were "howling" about how it wasn't "right" that Tony should be on the verge of overtaking them due to points for Localism - that points should be limited to "quality blog posts" - as determined by the "in crowd" at that time.

A number of 'Rainers still Active were around for those "interactions" - and none of the … (24 comments)

active rain: And The Nominees Are... - 05/14/16 01:33 AM
Time for some fun in the 'Rain.

Ambassadors.

Active Rain Ambassadors.

Having read a few posts, and Q&As on the topic, it seemed to me that perhaps I should "nominate" a few of the 'Rainers who I think would make FANTASTIC Ambassadors!

Admittedly, I have not contacted any of those listed below.

And I have only listed eight names (far more come to mind) because I can only "tag" ten people in a post, and two spots are reserved - one for Mary Yonkers who will likely grace this post with a graphic ("The Devil Made Me Do It!" Mary), and one for Bob Stewart so he can … (28 comments)

active rain: Making A Hyperlink In Your Blog Post - 05/13/16 11:27 PM
A new member asked me how to make a hyperlink in a blog post - so I thought I would share the process in a post so that others who may have the same question might find this useful.

When you want to add a hyperlink to some text - the first thing is to highlight the text you want to "link", like this:
Next, click on the hyperlink button in the toolbar:
This opens up a new window:
The text you highlighted appears automatically in the "Text to display" field.

By default, the "Target" is a "New Window" - and is best left that way.

active rain: Active Rain Q&A Section - Parked and Reading! - 04/16/16 12:49 AM
The Active Rain Q&A Section came to be while I was away on my most recent (and hopefully last ever) hiatus from the 'Rain.
I find it in some ways to be more dynamic than blog posts.
If I have a question to ask, I can count on receiving many relevant responses, without which I might spend a significant amount of time "searching" for the information in the 'Rain, or elsewhere on-line.
If others have asked questions, and if I have an answer (sometimes with a little humor included!) I respond and move on the the next question.

Typically I review every question posted … (15 comments)

active rain: The Points Of Active Rain - Others - 03/18/16 02:19 AM
