highland village: We All Find Out Tomorrow - 08/14/11 04:43 PM

Tomorrow's the day...
We'll be waiting by my cell phone like a teenage girl...and not for the boy to ask us for a date.
It's not an official day on the school calendar but tomorrow, we get a phone call from the teacher of my daughter's first grade class at Heritage Elementary.  Oh, what an exciting day!
Will she get the teacher she wants so desperately?  Will she get the teacher I want so desperately?!?!
So, wait by the phone Heritage Hawks and be ready to jump for joy or sigh in disbelief.

highland village: Mandatory Water Restrictions in Highland Village - 07/28/11 07:05 AM

If you live in Highland Village, there will be less running in the sprinklers.
Mandatory Phase 2 water restrictions limiting landscape watering for Highland Village residents went into effect on Wednesday, July 27. Phase 2 prohibits residential and commercial landscape watering on Monday’s and Friday’s and restricts watering the rest of the days of the week between 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Wasteful water runoff is prohibited, which includes hosing down pavement or rinsing off cars. Groundwater well owners and residents that draw water from the lake are required to post a sign showing well water or lake water is … (0 comments)

highland village: Go To School Without Supplies? - 07/25/11 08:23 AM

The excitement is already mounting at our local Wal-Mart.  My soon-to-be first grader wandered through the backpack aisle with eyes gleaming at the site of the clean and colorful backpacks.
As a family that doesn't have a problem providing basic necessities for our kids, it really troubled me that there are kids that won't be going to school with a new backpack and school supplies that will help them be prepared for school.
The Village Church is holding a backpack and school supply drive for school-aged kids in our community.  You can pick up a list of necessary … (2 comments)

highland village: Who Should I Contact About a Pothole in My City? - 07/19/11 02:31 AM
I had this same question after I drove over, around and through a pothole on my street for over a month.
The timing was impeccable by Highland Village's new "Eye On" app for smart phone users.  I was so excited to see my city was so progressive!

Smart phone users simply open the application, select an issue, take a picture, and tap submit – the application picks up the exact location and sends the issue directly to the staff member who can fix it. You can track your submitted issues and, if you enter an e-mail address, receive notification … (3 comments)

highland village: Castlewood 4th of July Parade Was a Blast! - 07/04/11 08:28 AM
I am not sure if it's because my daughter knows more kids from the neighborhood, or that I know the HOA president, or just that it's about that time, but my family and I have attended several of the community-sponsored events at Castlewood in Highland Village, TX.

It's nice that our dues go to not only great facilities, but excellent staff and volunteer community members who help plan special events like today's 4th of July parade.  We have never done this before but we will definitely be participating in years to come.
The parade started with red, white and … (4 comments)

highland village: New Principal at Heritage Elementary Announced - 05/28/11 04:57 PM
The Lewisville ISD announced the new principal at Heritage Elementary.  Toby Maxson currently serves as an assistant principal of Killough Lewisville High School. During his time, Killough LHS was named to the Texas Business and Education Coalition Honor Roll, an award received by less than four percent of all Texas schools. The campus also received an exemplary rating from the Texas Education Agency.

Maxson joined the district in 1999 and previously served as assistant principal of Huffines Middle School and a teacher at Bluebonnet Elementary. A graduate of Centenary College of Louisiana, he received his master's degree from The … (0 comments)

highland village: Developer Tries A Second Time To Add Apartments - 05/17/11 06:14 AM
A while back, the developer of The District of Highland Village, Landcore Development Company, in an attempt to ramp up sales on a fledgling mixed-use development, proposed a multi-family unit idea to the Highland Village City Council in December 2010.
I recently received an email from a neighbor that informed me that this group is trying yet again to turn this into a 98-unit multi-family complex.  This motion was denied with a vote of 5-0 but they are still trying.  The public outcry was heard with many residents showing their displeasure for an apartment complex in Highland Village.  This apartment … (0 comments)

highland village: Spring Means Garage Sales! - 04/16/11 02:41 AM
I love a good bargain.  I mean, who doesn't?
Last week, a few neighborhoods in our city of Highland Village had garage sales.  I was about to spend $99 plus shipping and tax on a cute Pottery Barn chair for my son's room.  My sister had the eagle eye and found the exact same chair for $10.  What a deal!
Several neighborhoods in Highland Village are having garage sales again this week including Castlewood, Highland Shores and Highland Forest.  Bring your cash and your bargain-sniffing dog!

highland village: Cyber-Bullying An Issue Locally - 04/12/11 10:17 AM
It's a sad time in our culture.  What should be a fun and entertaining form of friendship and camaraderie, has resulted in numerous suicides and suicide attempts among junior high and high school students around the country.
This issue hit home in the small-town community of Lake Dallas when two suicides occurred in the past two months along with another attempted suicide for these teenagers.
Bullying isn't a new phenomenon, right along with things like peer pressure, drugs and alcohol use.  But, with the use of text messaging, smart phone usage, and social media, bullying has been taken a step … (5 comments)

highland village: Unexpected Road Closure in Highland Village - 04/07/11 04:16 PM

It's always when I'm running late that I run into signs like "Road Closed" or "Detour".  But I don't want to take the detour!
These are the signs that are blocking part of Highland Shores Blvd at Hillside Drive/Twin Coves in Highland Village.  Allow yourself a few minutes extra as you wind around the horseshoe back onto Highland Shores.  Crews have been working on the road the past few days and it was open yesterday, but today was a different story!

highland village: Highland Village Road Now Open! - 03/31/11 10:59 AM
After many months of construction, this afternoon at 3 pm, Highland Village Road at Wichita Forest was reopened!  There was tremendous flooding in September of 2010 that caused a portion of the road to wash away, including Lewisville Lake boat docks.   The newly constructed road will include raising the road, enhanced drainage and a ten-foot wide trail.  Thanks to The Villager and the HVPD eWatch email for this timely information!
This stretch of road is used by many looking for an alternative to FM 407 or Brazos and is a much more scenic route!

We have visited the docks … (2 comments)

highland village: They Survived! - 03/24/11 04:57 AM

It's no secret that we had some brutal stretches of winter here in Dallas.  The measures we took after our tankless hot water heater froze two of the four days during the ice storm were non-traditional to say the least.  We all take those precautionary steps to save our plants, shrubs and flowers.  Our family keeps old dog beds, tattered blankets and comforters in an effort to keep these babies warm.
I am happy to report that our "Peanuts" blanket helped provide the necessary warmth to make way for these beautiful climbers on our pergola.  Way to go hubby!  you … (0 comments)

highland village: Highland Village Council Approves Pedestrian Tunnel - 03/10/11 08:37 AM

One of the great things about the city of Highland Village is the expansive trail system that connects the entire city. With the opening of 2499 and the increase in traffic, crossing safely to access the inland trail can prove difficult and dangerous.

At the March 11 meeting, Council approved a resolution authorizing the contract with BW2 Engineers for engineering and design of City Trail to the FM 2499 Pedestrian Tunnel Trail Connection. The pedestrian tunnel was constructed with the expansion of FM 2499 and closed to pedestrian access until a connection is built to City Trail. The … (0 comments)

highland village: My Favorite Sign of Spring - 03/05/11 07:45 AM

Even though these beautiful white blooms only seem to be around for three days, the Bradford Pear is my favorite sign of spring.
Did you know that Bradford Pears are actually native to Korea and China but were brought to the US in 1963?
These are not very hardy trees so if you are looking for a stately tree to last for generations, this should definitely not be your tree of choice!  They can last about 25 years or until a harsh wind or rain storm hit your neighborhood.
I don't know if it is my ultra-sensitive sniffer, … (4 comments)

highland village: Way To Go Law Enforcement! - 02/26/11 06:53 AM
