placerville: Prepare for the rain? But we are in California! - 09/10/11 05:11 PM
This is not the time of year when I think about the rainy season in Placerville, Halloween is the usual reference date for me. However, while at the MeetUp in Roseville yesterday, it rained in El Dorado County. Although it lasted only a few minutes, it got me thinking of some things that need to be done before the rains get heavy.
I came up with a few things that I like to check before Halloween.
Roof check and maintenance –         Inspect for signs of damage – broken, loose tiles and shingles.
Repair damaged areas to create a … (19 comments)

Chipotle Is Coming To Placerville, Ca - The Locals Are Pleased

There has been a lack of restaurant choices here in Placerville. Recently, those that we did have, closed. So when we learned of getting a Chipotle, we are excited for the Grand Opening. I drove by tonight and the contractors were working late into the night.
Chipotle is a Mexican food chain that serves large burritos that are good.
They describe it this way...
"It's not just a burrito. It's a foil-wrapped, hand-crafted, local farm supporting, food culture changing cylinder of deliciousness."

Sounds like just my type … (5 comments)

placerville: Walk, Jog, Bike, or Horseback On This Placerville Trail - 09/05/11 02:54 PM

Placerville has trails for all sorts of exercise enthusiasts. Walking, jogging, bike trails, even horse trails can be found in the foothills of El Dorado County. One such trail is open to all of these trail blazers, right here, starting in Diamond Springs and ending in Placerville, Ca.
The El Dorado Trail stretches all the way up to Pollock Pines. The trail is broken into smaller segments, the fourth section of the El Dorado Trail, the "Trestle Segment", runs from Forni Road near the intersection with Ray Lawyer Drive to Missouri Flat Road near Walmart. The Trestle Segment … (10 comments)

placerville: Missing General Contractor Magically Reappears - 08/31/11 08:10 PM

Missing General Contractor Magically Reappears
I discovered I was missing for several days, until today. Okay maybe I wasn't missing, but I was misplaced for seven days within Google. After being at the top of Google Places for a very long time, Tromler Construction just vanished. I posted about it seven days ago when I was first missing - Vanishing From Google Places. Kind of scary to think that a business could just be lost for no reason. There weren't any changes, updates, or anything of that sort.
I researched throughout the Google empire for answers. Forums, help pages, trouble shooting, … (7 comments)

placerville: The Best Gourmet Pot Pies In Placerville - 08/31/11 06:01 PM

When thinking about places to go for lunch or dinner, we have many choices. We can probably find a restaurant for any ethnic food within driving distance here in California. When asked "Where do you want to go to eat?" dozens of choices quickly come to mind. There is a small restaurant that I had heard about right here in Placerville that many people recommended. Not your fansy restaurant, but a little store front down a side road. You'd probably miss it if you weren't looking for it.
The restuarant is called - Z-Pies.
What do they serve? Gourmet Pot … (10 comments)

placerville: Spooky Eyes In The Darkness - 08/26/11 09:45 PM

I was trying to get a photo of some faint light rays coming through the dark trees behind my house, but the photo came out too dark. Once I got it on the computer screen, I could see two eyes that had reflected back to the camera. I have had this experience with a flashlight, the eyes were far away and low to the ground so I could not (nor did I want to) figure out what it was. This photo probably capture something in the trees at that moment.
Spooky!

placerville: Is This A Handicap Parking Spot? - 08/26/11 08:18 PM
I was recently at the movie theatre near Placerville, Ca. While driving in the parking structure looking for parking, I saw a spot that was open very near to the entrance. Sandwiched between two handicap parking spaces was a third spot that may be the best kept secret in Placerville.
As you can see in the photo, the space is not decaled with the handicap symbol on the concrete or the wall. Is this a legal parking spot for the unhandicapped driver?
What do you think?

placerville: This Cat Is King In Our Home - 08/25/11 08:44 PM

A few years ago we heard of a cat that was abandoned in an apartment community. I was never much of a cat lover. But his guy reason has earned my appreciation for cats.
There has been a lot of talk recently about people leaving there pets when they move out of there homes and apartments. Passing this burden of stray pets onto neighbors and management is not humane. Thousands of pets are left behind. These animals are usually brought to the pound and made available for adoption. Because of the large numbers of pets being taken in, … (8 comments)

placerville: A Good Contractor Knows The Air Quailty For The Day - Placerville This Week - 08/07/11 08:14 PM

Now that summer is here, and temperatures reaching into the 90's, it's probably a good time to watch for air quality. I have found an Air Quality Index for Placerville, Ca. The Image is a forecast of this week.
I have linked the site for future reference and your local index.

Not sure what Air Quality is? Well, here is a definition that is available at the Weatherbug site.
What is AQI?
The AQI is an index for reporting daily air quality. It tells you how clean or polluted your air is, and what associated health concerns you … (8 comments)

placerville: I Spent A Gazillion* Dollar On Supplies And All I Get Are Free Pencils? - 07/19/11 03:29 PM

I have been doing business with a local lumber yard, Diamond Pacific, the last few months. They have been delivering lumber and supplies on a regular basis to the same apartment community, keeping the job flowing while not piling up too much to risk theft at night.
After spending a Gazillion dollars, the driver offers me a few carpenters pencils. Boy am I excited! Free pencils! Am I mad and upset, not really. Why? Well...
I have been given some steep discounts because they want my business. When there isn't a lot of General Contractors in the county doing a bunch of work, suddenly your become valuable if you've got projects to … (11 comments)

placerville: Shooting The Moving Wildlife In Placerville, Ca - 06/24/11 08:58 PM
After my last post, Shooting The Wildlife In Placerville, Ca, it occured to me that maybe I could post the video clip too.
The original picture was taken with my video camera. I grabbed a still picture from that video. With a High Definition Video Camera you can get some high quality photos. This makes it easier to get the "good" shots.
The short video is included here.

placerville: Shooting The Wildlife In Placerville, Ca - 06/23/11 07:03 PM

I was driving to work this morning and as I was passing the lake in Greenstone Country, I noticed a beautiful creature in the water. The water was mostly still but for a gentle ripple. I had to get a picture of this beauty. It seemed so quiet down at the water's edge, just waiting for this shot.
I'm not a fan of hunting, but I love shooting the camera and video.

placerville: The Oldest Newspaper In California - 06/07/11 01:53 AM

I can't imagine that there was a whole lot going on back in 1851, but apparently there was a need for a local newspaper. The Mountain Democrat is the oldest newspaper in California, it was established in 1851. What was going on back in 1851? Here are a few things that I have discovered.
January 28 - Northwestern University is founded. September 18 - The New York Times is founded. October - The Reuters news service is founded. Western Union is founded. President: Millard Fillmore (Whig) California Gold Rush (1848-1855) This last one, The California Gold Rush, was probably … (9 comments)

placerville: Dinner at Z-Pie's Tonight - A Local Dinner - 05/28/11 06:04 PM

I just got back from having dinner at Z-Pie's in Placerville. If you like pot pies, this is the place to go. Just off Main Street, 50 feet from the 50 freeway, it is very convenient.
The place was not crowded, so we were seated quickly. I had the Rosemary Lamb, my wife had the Southwestern Chicken. Both were very good. We shared a locally grown salad that is very tasty.
The cost was about $22.00 after all was done. Nothing fancy about the place, just good food. I would highly recommend eating here if you ever get the chance … (6 comments)

placerville: Well... because I like doing it! - 05/22/11 08:58 PM

A while ago, I had this guy that I know who was slow in business that was constantly bugging me for tree service work. I didn't know his work, nor did I know of anybody in need at the time. As luck would have it a big storm came through and we had some trees fall on our property (big ones) that I just couldn't do myself.

Thought I'd give this guy a call and see what he could do. He and his guys did an incredible job; thorough, clean, tireless.

While they were working, I … (10 comments)

placerville: It's Raining In My Community - 05/17/11 08:00 PM

Well my intentions were good, I wanted to record a video of the Greenstone Country Community in Placerville to share with ActiveRain members. The conditions weren't right. It is raining in California this week; I thought I could get some shots of the area to share.
Most of the video segments could not be used. I did put together this short video, explaining the situation. Sometimes even practicing making videos can be difficult. But I'm not discouraged over this. California weather will return and the opportunity to record will happen again.
Enjoy this day!

placerville: Cold Springs Country Club in Placerville - 05/14/11 05:35 PM

Wedged into a picturesque valley in the clear air high above Sacramento, is one of the California Gold Country's best kept secrets. Cut through a forest of oak and pine, three miles north of Placerville, Cold Springs Golf & Country Club is truly a ‘Nugget of the Mother Lode'. Deer, wild turkeys and other wildlife serenely roam the course, but they are well-mannered and let the golfers play through. Our fairways are lined with trees, not backyards of houses like many private clubs.
The course itself is a superior test of golf, calling for accurate tee shots down tree-lined … (2 comments)

placerville: Did You Say You Have Voles? - 05/12/11 05:02 PM

When I first saw one I thought it was a mouse, I was wrong.
Our cat is very good at hunting country critters, one day he had a special surprise for us. He caught a vole. At the time I did not know what it was but apparently it is very common in El Dorado County. They borough in the ground and eat the roots of plants. We thought we had gofers or something underground eating the plants that we would garden.

Here is a picture. Note the size for their front paws. The paw size and claws allow … (11 comments)
