THE DAY AFTER THE MOUNTAIN CLOSED - Vail Mountain and Beaver Creek Mountain closed for the season yesterday. Closing Day revellers found 12" to 15" of new snow and crystal clear blue skies - until 11:00am. Then, near blizzard conditions closed the back bowls and drove many off the mountain. This is a typical closing day reminicent of 18 of 20 past closing days. We'll most likely have FEET of new snow now through May - another reason you won't find many Locals in the office for awhile. VAIL VALLEY DAILY PHOTO: RECYCLING IN RED CLIFF A little ways up the road from Vail on the other side of Battle Mountain Pass towards Leadville is the metropolis of Red Cliff. This little Town owes it's existence to the Gilman Mine which has long since closed. While a good deal past it's prime, Red Cliff offers a shot of Counter Culture to the starched and pressed world class resorts near by. VAIL VALLEY DAILY PHOTO: A SUNDAY AFTERNOON ON TROUT POND LANE The normal visitor to Vail comes up for a week, checks into a hotel, and spends the day pounding down the slopes and the evenings dining and partying. More often than not we residents are treated with a lot more winter following closing day and this morning was no exception. Vail, Colorado Daily Photo - Christmas Day Hay Barn - Just about 10 miles up Brush Creek, a little past Adam's Rib Ranch, but not quite all the way to Sylvan Lake, sits this rustic hay barn. I have the opportunity to dirve by this old barn once or twice a year. Every time I do I wonder about the human drama it has witnessed for about 100 years or so. Vail, Colorado Daily Photo - Moon Over Mountain Star - While on a recent architectural photo shoot in the Vail Valley's Mountain Star subdivision I was blessed with the rising of this fabulous full moon. Over the years I have been working with a camera I have found few instances when the timing of a moon shot - cloud cover, ambient light, color of the sky, and earth surroundings - have meshed. Vail, Coloraod Daily Photo - A View of Things in the Vail Valley - While the snow cover is thinner in the Vail Valley than we are used to this time of year, reports from skiers coming off the mountain on this Christmas Eve are very favorable! Vail, Colorado Daily Photo - Silent Night Castle Peak is an imposing feature that lords over the entire lower Eagle Valley and is prominent enough to be home to every television/radio/telephone tower between the top of Vail Pass and Glenwood Canyon. It looks like a medieval castle during the daytime and even more so on a clear moonlit night. I wish I knew the name of the conical peak to the left in this photo. Vail, Colorado Daily Photo - 70 to Zero in 4 Seconds - Last week was World Cup Week on the Birds of Prey Downhill Course in Beaver Creek. The ringing of cow bells by the Swiss in the stands (who were feeling no pain) could not override the fact that this guy had just come through the finish gate at well over 70 MPH just seconds before. I'd venture to guess that 99% of these visitors only get to know the environs of Vail Village or Beaver Creek. There is a lot more to experience here if you just kick back and drink in the back roads.

Vail Valley Daily Photo: A Study in the Realtionship Between Time, Man, and Nature I guess this photo of a settler's cabin just outside Eagle could also be intitled "When you plant a house in a Cottonwood grove, you have Cottonwoods". Every time I drive by this item of local history I am reminded of the summer I planted a few Blue Spruce trees a little too close to my house.....had to move them at no little effort about 10 years later. I was finishing up a shoot on a new listing last night in Mountain Star -one of our most spectacular areas and just as I was wrapping up the exterior shots the moon poked through a heavy overcast and covered the subdivision with a beautiful, cold light.
