TUESDAY MORNING: Walking the Dogs Late Summer is paradise in the Colorado Mountains. Colors are rich and pure and the air is sparkling clean. This view greated me this morning as my dogs and I took our morning constitutional around the neighborhood. Eagle Ranch is as close to Ozzie and Harriet as you can get! I just ran into "The Beve" on his bike. What a terrific way to start the day! (5 comments)
THE DAY AFTER THE MOUNTAIN CLOSED - Vail Mountain and Beaver Creek Mountain closed for the season yesterday. Closing Day revellers found 12" to 15" of new snow and crystal clear blue skies - until 11:00am. Then, near blizzard conditions closed the back bowls and drove many off the mountain. This is a typical closing day reminicent of 18 of 20 past closing days. We'll most likely have FEET of new snow now through May - another reason you won't find many Locals in the office for awhile. The beach sounds pretty good right now! (4 comments)
Vail Valley Daily Photo - Waiting for Spring The permanent snow is gone from the lower valley now and only an occasional dusting from time to time covers the countryside. The valley floor is still brown with only a hint of the coming summer. There's lots of winter left here - probably a couple of months. The lifts close next week. Time to think about a road trip! A FOGGY MORNING IN THE VAIL VALLEY - Hmmm... this is interesting. Fog is a very rare event here - happens only once or twice a year. A nice heavy rain last night wiped out any last hint of snow here in the lowlands but no doubt dumped lots of nice late season snow on Vail mountain. This is kind of a nice change. We are now in the last three weeks of ski season 2012 -2013. I'm looking forward to summer! (1 comments)
VAIL'S LEGENDARY BACK BOWLS WILL BE OPEN SATURDAY, DEC. 22. Over 2' of snow has fallen in the last 5 days, infinitely improving the attitudes of Vailites and visitors alike - just in time for the Holidays. By Saturday, skiable terrain on the largest ski resort in the United States will increase to 2500 acres with the opening of Vail's Legindary Sun Up and Sun Down bowls. The Snow Gods are have definitely changed their attitudes about Vail and have decided to grant us a little of the snow they held back last year. It's time to make those (2 comments)
VAIL VALLEY DAILY PHOTO: A LITTLE NEW SNOW! With the eminent opening of Vail Mountain only a week away, any evidence of a little new snow is welcome! What a difference a day makes! Yesterday was shirt sleeve weather. This morning we were treated to several inches on new snow on the Mountain with more promised over the next few days. Mother Nature never seems to fail us. Maybe soon we will have a few more occupants in Lionshead Mall than an "Official Car" and statue depicting what we'd all like to be doing! (1 comments)
Vail Valley Daily Photo: Last Man Standing In Nature as in life, there are always examples of the results of not giving up, even in the face of being surrounded by capitualion. I found a great example of this while taking an early morning walk on the bike path between the end of the Vail Golf Course and the East Vail open space. In this heavy aspen hillside forest there was nary a leaf to be seen - except on this single, otherwise unremarkable tree. Why or how it hung out in the face of overwhelming suggestion, I have (0 comments)
VAIL VALLEY DAILY PHOTO: END OF A NICE DAY - The Eagle Valley is nothing but big skies and clear air (although not much air at 8,000 feet!) Cloud shots like this are the rule rather than the exception. Last night I was out in the back yard and was treated to this especially glorious display. These guys have just drifted in from Seattle. While far from the snow carriers we are waiting patiently for, they certainly make the wait worthwhile! (1 comments)
VAIL VALLEY DAILY PHOTO: IT'S A START Well, I guess some things have got to start off slow. October in Vail is always a slow starter - this year has been nothing to write home about either. First measurable snow is always just around Holloween. Then we have one big storm on the 15th of Novermber or so - just enough to open the mountain for Thanksgiving. Next, a few meaninful dumps for the Christmas crowd. January......look out! I'm looking forward to some turns! (2 comments)
VAIL VALLEY DAILY PHOTO: CRAZY SKY On the way home the other evening I noticed a cloud formation highlighted by the setting sun that looked suspiciously like the beginning of a tornado funnel. The lowering tip of the funnel glowed like it was a neon light. There has never been a tornado reported in the Colorado mountains that I have ever heard of and the weather was way too cool for tornatdo development. Instead, it must have been Virgo - something we do see a lot of here. The way I understand it, Virgo is a rainstorm that that (1 comments)
VAIL VALLEY DAILY PHOTO: THE LAST OF THE COLOR After the last couple of days of colder weather and gusty winds, most of the dramatic aspen colors have been blown into history. You can still find pockets of former glory in limited areas that are sheltered from the wind and frost. While driving to a sales meeting at a terrific new listing last Monday, I turned the corner at the top of the hill and took this view right between the eyes! I wonder how long I can get my aspen leaf fix at this location? (1 comments)
VAIL VALLEY DAILY PHOTO: FIRST SNOW First Snow is always an exciting time here in the Vail Valley. It confirms the realization that it's time to put away the golf clubs and hiking boots and start dusting off the the ol' boards (or board as it may be). While opening day at Vail is not until just before Thanksgiving, there is always a race between Loveland Basin, Keystone, Arapaho, and Copper Mountain to see who can be the first Colorado ski area to open. Some years this has been won before Holloween. It's still pretty warm...doesn't look like it's (2 comments)
VAIL VALLEY DAILY PHOTO: A QUICK TRIP ABOVE TIMBERLINE - Last Wednesday was just the kind of day that cried for a quick trip above timberline. We are expecting snow up high (right about here) in the next few days and we knew this was probably the last chance this year to get out for some really high vistas without boards under our feet. What an amazing place we live in! Out the door at 8:00, 12,500 feet by 10:00 and back down by 1:00 for a beer and a nice lunch at Vendeta's on Bridge Street. Hootie the (3 comments)
VAIL VALLEY DAILY PHOTO: A LAZY SUNDAY IN PARADISE - IT'S HARD TO FAULT A DAY LIKE ONE WE'VE JUST HAD. NICE AND WARM, NOT A BREATH OF WIND, AND ....COLOR. THIS HAS BEEN AN EXPECIALLY BEAUTIFUL FALL IN THE VAIL VALLEY. THE UNUSUALLY DRY SUMMER HAS BEEN CAPPED WITH PLENTY OF RAIN IN THE LAST MONTH. I AM TOLD THAT THIS HAS RESULTED IN A VERY VIBRANT ASPEN DISPLAY BUT UNFORTUNATELY, ONE THAT IS MUCH SHORTER AND EARLIER THAN NORMAL. THE MOUNTAIN-SIDES WILL SOON TRADE YELLOW FOR GRAY...AND THEN WHITE! AT ANY RATE, THIS FALL HAS BEEN ONE (0 comments)
Vail, CO Daily Photo - Early Summer in the Vail Valley On a recent photo shoot of a wonderful new listing on one of he most dramatic sites in the Vali Valley, I had the occasion to capture this shot of the Town of Vail and the Gore Range just after sunset. The Aspens have just leafed out at 8,500 feet and the hillsides are starting to turn green. It's a wonderful time to be in Vail, although it's a bit quiet this time of year - especially if you make your living in the real estate industry! This (1 comments)
Vail, CO Daily Photo - The Day After the Mountain Closed It doesn't take a lot of time living in the Vail Valley to realize that Summer doesn't come to the Colorado mountains with the close of the ski season! More often than not we residents are treated with a lot more winter following closing day and this morning was no exception. But...how many places can you be treated to scenes like this on your way to work? Yep, it's worh it. Photo: Nilsson Images
Vail Valley Daily Photo: Greening Up Yesterday was a grey, leden day here in the Vail Valley but temperatures were moderate and it was kind of refreshing to get back into a more seasonal weather pattern. Just how much sunshine, cloudless skys, and 70 Degree temperatures can you handle anyway? With the front of Vail Mountain starting to look like a mudslide and the Pro Ski Patrol gang spending their days moving snow from the trees to create skiways - even at the top of the mountain - the 2011/2012 ski season is coming to rapid close. Only 3 more (0 comments)
The Bald Mountain Road House, Vail, CO - One of East Vail's Best Real Estate Offerings! Once in a great while I have the opportunity to list a residence that just seems to have everything going for it. The location is spectacular, the views and sun are outstanding, the condition is immaculate, and the price is "just right". The Bald Mountain Road House in scenic East Vail is just that kind of property. This dramatic, 4 Bedroom home has been lovingly updated from top to bottom and features new intereior finishes throughout capped by a spectacular kitchen with top (0 comments)
Vail, CO Daily Photo - Wrapping Up the Ski Season - From this photo taken yesterday afternoon, you can see definite signs that the 2011-2012 ski season in Vail is rapidly drawing to a close. Last year on this date the Gore Range was still blanketed with heavy snow and we still had 10 more deep powder days....closing day celebrations on the mountain were somewhat hindered by a major spring blizzard that dumped another 10" on an already record setting base. This year the story is different. The Gore is looking a lot like it does in June/July and (1 comments)
Vail Valley Daily Photo: If you aren't here now, your're missing out! What more could you ask for? 15+ inches of new snow in the last 7 days (falling mostly at night), blue skys and comfortable temperatures, 90% of the mountain open, great nightlife and lots of family fun. If the low snow reports of the previous month have discouraged you from coming to Vail, let me assure you that the skiing experience here now is as good as it gets. Some of the best skiing, snow, and temperatures are traditionally right around the corner. Get on up here! (4 comments)
