eagle: Walkin' the Dogs - 08/27/13 01:15 AM

TUESDAY MORNING:  Walking the Dogs
Late Summer is paradise in the Colorado Mountains.  Colors are rich and pure and the air is sparkling clean.  This view greated me this morning as my dogs and I took our morning constitutional around the neighborhood.  Eagle Ranch is as close to Ozzie and Harriet as you can get!  I just ran into "The Beve" on his bike.  What a terrific way to start the day!

Vail Valley Daily Photo - Waiting for Spring
The permanent snow is gone from the lower valley now and only an occasional dusting from time to time covers the countryside.  The valley floor is still brown with only a hint of the coming summer.  There's lots of winter left here - probably a couple of months.  The lifts close next week.  Time to think about a road trip!

A FOGGY MORNING IN THE VAIL VALLEY -
Hmmm... this is interesting.  Fog is a very rare event here - happens only once or twice a year.  A nice heavy rain last night wiped out any last hint of snow here in the lowlands but no doubt dumped lots of nice late season snow on Vail mountain.
This is kind of a nice change.  We are now in the last three weeks of ski season 2012 -2013.  I'm looking forward to summer!

VAIL VALLEY DAILY PHOTO: END OF A NICE DAY -
The Eagle Valley is nothing but big skies and clear air (although not much air at 8,000 feet!)  Cloud shots like this are the rule rather than the exception.  Last night I was out in the back yard and was treated to this especially glorious display.  These guys have just drifted in from Seattle.  While far from the snow carriers we are waiting patiently for, they certainly make the wait worthwhile!

VAIL VALLEY DAILY PHOTO:  VERY EARLY MORNING IN EAGLE RANCH
Several mornings ago - around 6:00 AM - I found myself out on the Eagle Ranch Golf Course, trusty Nikon in hand, in search of the large flocks of Canadian Geese that have been frequenting our area the last few weeks.  The Vail Valley is smack in the middle of the north/south flyway for these birds who come in to spend the night on the golf course in their journey north or south. I had to be out there early.  You can hear the departure of each daily flight in … (0 comments)

VAIL VALLEY DAILY PHOTO: "IS THIS A GREAT JOB, OR WHAT?"
This is Izzy.  Izzy is the Assistant Greens Keeper at the Eagle Ranch Golf Club.   Izzy's job is to ride around on this cool cart with his boss and best friend Derrik and figure out the most diabolical pin placements imaginable.  In addition, Izzy must chase Prairie Dogs and Geese (messy critters) off the fairways and do other such stuff.  It's a lot better job than working in a junk yard - a lot more refined.  The hours are great too.  While you have to get up before … (2 comments)

Vail Valley Daily Photo:  Gooood Morning!
Exceptional mornings like this are the Rule rather than the Exception in Summer Vail.  Crisp and crystal clear is the statistical norm around here.  We were suprised this Memorial Day weekend to be greated by the expected sunshine filtered by a heavy overcast of smoke from several fires in south western Colorado and Northern Arizona. Fire season has come early to the western US due to our abnormally dry winter.  It may be an interesting summer season!

eagle: Vail, Colorado Daily Photo - Christmas Day Hay Barn - 12/30/11 12:08 PM

Vail, Colorado Daily Photo - Christmas Day Hay Barn -
Just about 10 miles up Brush Creek, a little past Adam's Rib Ranch, but not quite all the way to Sylvan Lake, sits this rustic hay barn.  I have the opportunity to dirve by this old barn once or twice a year.  Every time I do I wonder about the human drama it has witnessed for about 100 years or so.  It never seems to change - nor does it ever stay the same.  For instance, the log farm house up on the hill behind the barn....it's not there any … (1 comments)

Vail, Colorado Daily Photo - Although It's Been Said Many Times, Many Ways....
Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays to all.  May this day be filled with family, fun, thankfulness, food, and football - not to mention a few turns on the mountain if you are here in the Vail Valley.  Christmas day has dawned clear, blue and frosty in the Vail Valley.  What a wonderful place to be during the holiday season!  Hope you can make it up!

eagle: Vail, Colorado Daily Photo - A View of Things in the Vail Valley - 12/24/11 09:57 AM

Vail, Coloraod Daily Photo - A View of Things in the Vail Valley -  While the snow cover is thinner in the Vail Valley than we are used to this time of year, reports from skiers coming off the mountain on this Christmas Eve are very favorable! Variety of open slopes is somewhat limited but what is open is in wonderful condition, thanks to Vail Resort's top flight Mountain Maintenance team.  Unfortunately, with no new snow in the forecast, these pro's are going to have their skills tested before the high Christmas Season crowds go home.
And crowds there are!  Early … (4 comments)

Vail, Colorado Daily Photo - Silent Night
Castle Peak is an imposing feature that lords over the entire lower Eagle Valley and is prominent enough to be home to every television/radio/telephone tower between the top of Vail Pass and Glenwood Canyon.  It looks like a medieval castle during the daytime and even more so on a clear moonlit night.  I wish I knew the name of the conical peak to the left in this photo.  It's obviously the cone of an ancient volcano that must have been quite a site in it's day.  The entire lower Eagle Valley shows … (7 comments)

eagle: Vail Valley Daily Photo: Back Roads - 11/21/11 12:58 AM

Vail Valley Daily Photo:  Back Roads - Many thousands of visitors come to the Vail Valley in both winter and summer. I'd venture to guess that 99% of these visitors only get to know the environs of Vail Village or Beaver Creek.
There is a lot more to experience here if you just kick back and drink in the back roads.

Vail Valley Daily Photo: A Study in the Realtionship Between Time, Man, and Nature
I guess this photo of a settler's cabin just outside Eagle could also be intitled "When you plant a house in a Cottonwood grove, you have Cottonwoods".  Every time I drive by this item of local history I am reminded of the summer I planted a few Blue Spruce trees a little too close to my house.....had to move them at no little effort about 10 years later.
Although in this case the builder of this cabin likely didn't plant these Cottonwoods too close to … (1 comments)

eagle: Vail Valley Daily Photo: Remembering Last Summer - 10/30/11 04:40 AM
Vail Valley Daily Photo: Remembering Last Summer.  Sometimes you are just walking along minding your own business and you run across a scene that is poignant with visions of what must have gone on there.  This was one of those scenes - tucked down in a quiet corner of a cottonwood grove along Brush Creek. And there the scene sits, waiting for the return of summer - the snow capped peaks in the distance reminding us of good times in the winter to come.
