skiing in vail: Vail Valley Daily Photo: Waiting for Spring - 04/06/13 01:33 PM

Vail Valley Daily Photo - Waiting for Spring
The permanent snow is gone from the lower valley now and only an occasional dusting from time to time covers the countryside.  The valley floor is still brown with only a hint of the coming summer.  There's lots of winter left here - probably a couple of months.  The lifts close next week.  Time to think about a road trip!

skiing in vail: A FOGGY MORNING IN THE VAIL VALLEY - 03/31/13 03:52 AM

A FOGGY MORNING IN THE VAIL VALLEY -
Hmmm... this is interesting.  Fog is a very rare event here - happens only once or twice a year.  A nice heavy rain last night wiped out any last hint of snow here in the lowlands but no doubt dumped lots of nice late season snow on Vail mountain.
This is kind of a nice change.  We are now in the last three weeks of ski season 2012 -2013.  I'm looking forward to summer!

skiing in vail: Vail Valley Daily Photo: Last Man Standing - 10/23/12 11:19 PM

Vail Valley Daily Photo: Last Man Standing
In Nature as in life, there are always examples of the results of not giving up, even in the face of being surrounded by  capitualion.  I found a great example of this while taking an early morning walk on the bike path between the end of the Vail Golf Course and the East Vail open space.  In this heavy aspen hillside forest there was nary a leaf to be seen - except on this single, otherwise unremarkable tree.  Why or how it hung out in the face of overwhelming suggestion, I have … (0 comments)

skiing in vail: Vail Valley Daily Photo: Greening Up - 04/12/12 11:01 PM

Vail Valley Daily Photo: Greening Up
Yesterday was a grey, leden day here in the Vail Valley but temperatures were moderate and it was kind of refreshing to get back into a more seasonal weather pattern.  Just how much sunshine, cloudless skys, and 70 Degree temperatures can you handle anyway?
With the front of Vail Mountain starting to look like a mudslide and the Pro Ski Patrol gang spending their days moving snow from the trees to create skiways - even at the top of the mountain - the 2011/2012 ski season is coming to rapid close.
Only 3 more … (0 comments)

skiing in vail: Vail, CO Daily Photo - Wrapping Up the Ski Season - 03/25/12 03:16 AM

Vail, CO Daily Photo - Wrapping Up the Ski Season -
From this photo taken yesterday afternoon, you can see definite signs that the 2011-2012 ski season in Vail is rapidly drawing to a close.  Last year on this date the Gore Range was still blanketed with heavy snow and we still had 10 more deep powder days....closing day celebrations on the mountain were somewhat hindered by a major spring blizzard that dumped another 10" on an already record setting base.
This year the story is different.  The Gore is looking a lot like it does in June/July and … (1 comments)

skiing in vail: Vail, Colorado Daily Photo - Christmas Day Hay Barn - 12/30/11 12:08 PM

Vail, Colorado Daily Photo - Christmas Day Hay Barn -
Just about 10 miles up Brush Creek, a little past Adam's Rib Ranch, but not quite all the way to Sylvan Lake, sits this rustic hay barn.  I have the opportunity to dirve by this old barn once or twice a year.  Every time I do I wonder about the human drama it has witnessed for about 100 years or so.  It never seems to change - nor does it ever stay the same.  For instance, the log farm house up on the hill behind the barn....it's not there any … (1 comments)

skiing in vail: Vail, Colorado Daily Photo - Moon Over Mountain Star - 12/26/11 02:17 PM

Vail, Colorado Daily Photo - Moon Over Mountain Star -
While on a recent architectural photo shoot in the Vail Valley's Mountain Star subdivision I was blessed with the rising of this fabulous full moon.  Over the years I have been working with a camera I have found few instances when the timing of a moon shot - cloud cover, ambient light, color of the sky, and earth surroundings - have meshed.  This was one of those times.  So here we have an iconic moon to the East and the lights of the Eagle Valley and Beaver Creek to the South. … (3 comments)

Vail, Colorado Daily Photo - Although It's Been Said Many Times, Many Ways....
Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays to all.  May this day be filled with family, fun, thankfulness, food, and football - not to mention a few turns on the mountain if you are here in the Vail Valley.  Christmas day has dawned clear, blue and frosty in the Vail Valley.  What a wonderful place to be during the holiday season!  Hope you can make it up!

skiing in vail: Vail, Colorado Daily Photo - A View of Things in the Vail Valley - 12/24/11 09:57 AM

Vail, Coloraod Daily Photo - A View of Things in the Vail Valley -  While the snow cover is thinner in the Vail Valley than we are used to this time of year, reports from skiers coming off the mountain on this Christmas Eve are very favorable! Variety of open slopes is somewhat limited but what is open is in wonderful condition, thanks to Vail Resort's top flight Mountain Maintenance team.  Unfortunately, with no new snow in the forecast, these pro's are going to have their skills tested before the high Christmas Season crowds go home.
And crowds there are!  Early … (4 comments)

skiing in vail: Vail, Colorado Daily Photo - Silent Night - 12/19/11 05:38 AM

Vail, Colorado Daily Photo - Silent Night
Castle Peak is an imposing feature that lords over the entire lower Eagle Valley and is prominent enough to be home to every television/radio/telephone tower between the top of Vail Pass and Glenwood Canyon.  It looks like a medieval castle during the daytime and even more so on a clear moonlit night.  I wish I knew the name of the conical peak to the left in this photo.  It's obviously the cone of an ancient volcano that must have been quite a site in it's day.  The entire lower Eagle Valley shows … (7 comments)

skiing in vail: Vail, Colorado Daily Photo: A Trace on the Dog Means 4" On the Mountain - 12/14/11 02:56 PM

Vail, Colorado Daily Photo:  A Trace on the Dog Means 4" on the Mountain -
What's not to like about 4" of new snow on the mountain this morning?  Light, fluffy stuff that makes for really nice turns!  The trail crew is doing a beautiful job making a day on Vail Mountain an enjoyable experience and while we are still a ways off from opening the back bowls, there is plenty of great skiing available.  There is even talk of opening up a few more lifts this weekend - just in time for the pre-Christmas crowd.

skiing in vail: Vail, Colorado Daily Photo - 70 to Zero in 4 seconds - 12/09/11 05:03 AM

Vail, Colorado Daily Photo - 70 to Zero in 4 Seconds - Last week was World Cup Week on the Birds of Prey Downhill Course in Beaver Creek.  The ringing of cow bells by the Swiss in the stands (who were feeling no pain) could not override the fact that this guy had just come through the finish gate at well over 70 MPH just seconds before.  If you haven't seen a World Class downhill in person, you owe it to yourself to come to Beaver Creek in the first week of every December. You will never forget the experience … (1 comments)

skiing in vail: Vail, Colorado Daily Photo - Maybe a Little More Paint Before We Put the Place On the Market? - 12/08/11 06:12 PM

Vail, Colorado Daily Photo - Maybe a Little More Pain Before We Put the Place on the Market?
I wonder if the rancher who built this home up East Lake Creek Road back in the early 1900's had any idea his house would be surrounded by $5,000,000 to $15,000,000 gentleman ranches a hundred years later?  It's nice that reminders of our past still exist in the Vail Valley.  A scene like this kind of slows the frenetic pace of life for a bit - at least long enough to capture this image of the past.

skiing in vail: Vail, CO - A Little Bit of Bavaria in Colorado - 12/03/11 09:16 AM

Vail, CO - A Little Bit of Bavaria in Colorado -  You'd think that a town created from the ground up to mimic the style of a idyllic German/Swiss mountain community would have more authentic Bavarian architecture.  Amazingly this architectural style is rare in Vail... as the owners of 2575 Davos Trail in West Vail, North found out when they moved here from their native Bavaria.  After searching at length for a residence offering the Old World style they were craving, they finally located this Vail Das Schoen area home that had the basic lines of an authentic Bavarian mountain structure … (3 comments)

skiing in vail: Vail, CO Daily Photo - Some Photos Just Have To Be Taken - 12/01/11 04:12 PM

Vail, CO Daily Photo - Some Photos just have to be taken - Have you ever glanced up while you're just walking along minding your own business and realized you were looking at something that could be considered mundane but something about it just begged a photograph?  This happened yesterday afternoon to me and because I had my camera in the trunk, this was the result.
A word about the subject of this idyllic scene:  The Austria Haus Club is perhaps the most successful Fractional Ownership property in the Colorado mountains.  Constructed just 8 years ago, the Austria Haus Club … (6 comments)

skiing in vail: Vail, CO Daily Photo - Early Winter on the Vail Golf Course - 12/01/11 05:32 AM

Early Winter on the Vail Golf Course  November 30, 2011
No Golf today but there are obviously other benefits found in a hike around the back 9 of the Vail Golf Course.  Of course, it helps that we are experiencing one of our 300 sunny days today!  The National Weather Service is calling for 10" over the next couple of days.  Skiing has been excellent thanks to the hard work of the Vail Resort snowmaking, trail, and Cat crews but a little new snow would help to add to the variety as currently only 600 acres (of 4,000+ acres!) … (3 comments)

Vail, CO Daily Photo - Blue Sky, Late Afternoon -  So what if the snow is a little thin?  The weather is absolutely great and the football game is on.  This dramatic view is from the 5th floor deck of a Landmark Residence condominium in the heart of Lionshead...a nice way to spend a lazy Sunday afternoon in Vail - even without 6" of new snow!

skiing in vail: Vail, CO Daily Photo - Anticipation - 11/27/11 03:56 AM

Vail, CO Daily Photo - Anticipation
Base of Bachelor Gulch, early morning.  Not a cloud in the ski but 7" of new snow last week has resulted in lots of open terrain.  While the majority of open trails are beginner and intermediate, the packed powder conditions are surprisingly good for this time of year. Vail Mountain now has 11 of it's 31 chairs open and lots of top to bottom skiing.
