VAIL'S LEGENDARY BACK BOWLS WILL BE OPEN SATURDAY, DEC. 22. Over 2' of snow has fallen in the last 5 days, infinitely improving the attitudes of Vailites and visitors alike - just in time for the Holidays. By Saturday, skiable terrain on the largest ski resort in the United States will increase to 2500 acres with the opening of Vail's Legindary Sun Up and Sun Down bowls. The Snow Gods are have definitely changed their attitudes about Vail and have decided to grant us a little of the snow they held back last year. It's time to make those (2 comments)
Vail CO Daily Photo - Closing Day 3" of new snow! Too little and too late. Over the last 50+ years I have skied on closing day, I can count on one hand the wonderful, sunny closing days that make the year end celebration memorable! We normally suffer from cold, gloomy weather on closing day and today is no exception. Not to worry. It's a great day to stoke up the fireplace and finish up that book I haven't had time for. The weatherman says "70 degrees and clear skies for Monday". Figures. No complaints! Photo: NilssonImages.com (1 comments)
Vail, CO Daily Photo - Do You See the Cat? I took this photo just because I have a wierd attraction to windows in barns. When I took this out of the camera for processing I noticed something I didn't see when I snaped the shot. Do you see the cat? The ski season is drawing to an early close this year. While we were kept alive throughout most of the season by "just in time" snow storms and a valiant performance by the snow making crews, we are starting to admit defeat and closing some south facing (1 comments)
Vail, Colorado Daily Photo - An Evening in the Vail Valley I thought I might share this idillic shot taken on a recent evening listing photo shoot. I think it conveys a lot about the many faces of our beautiful area. The real estate market here continues to make a dramatic comeback. In an intercompany email today, Julie Bergsten, Vice President of Slifer Smith and Frampton Real Estate, reveiled that the Slifer sales staff booked $76,097,500 in new contracts during the month of February just ended. This volume was more of February 2011 which totalled $32,803,500! Further encouragement can be (5 comments)
Vail, Colorado Daily Photo - Snow Cats and Mt. of the Holy Cross - The relationship between man and nature is the key factor in the appeal of the wonderful sport of skiing. While we often consciously ignore this innate realationship when stepping into our bindings, sliding down the ramp at the top of the lift, or carving a turn through the white stuff, nature is always there. We must protect this man/nature relationship through good stewardship. To me, this photo brings home the importance of respectng and relating to nature in all we do. Kudos to Senators Mark Udall (1 comments)
vail mountain: Vail, Colorado Daily Photo - Nice Turns!

. Vail Colorado Daily Photo - Nice Turns! Did you ever notice that there are times in life when looking backward is as satifying as looking forward? Some nice linked turns in new powder creates one of those opportunities. What great skiing we are having this week! There are lots of folks in town and real estate activity is "spirited". Warm temperatures and blue sky are the icing on the cake. Photo: Nilsson Images (2 comments)
Vail Valley Daily Photo: If you aren't here now, your're missing out! What more could you ask for? 15+ inches of new snow in the last 7 days (falling mostly at night), blue skys and comfortable temperatures, 90% of the mountain open, great nightlife and lots of family fun. If the low snow reports of the previous month have discouraged you from coming to Vail, let me assure you that the skiing experience here now is as good as it gets. Some of the best skiing, snow, and temperatures are traditionally right around the corner. Get on up here! (4 comments)
Vail Valley Daily Photo: The new 10th Restaurant is a Winner! Vail Mountain has a fabulous new sit-down-order-from-the-menu restaurant that is really impressive! If you are tired of stomping with the heards through slippery lunch counter lines and fighting to keep from having your tray knocked out of your hand in the standard run of the mill mid mountain restaurant, you are going to love the 10th! The restaurant's immediate big time success demonstrates that you won't be the only one. Try this experience on for size: Ski the morning until your legs can't take it any more. (3 comments)
Vail, Colorado Daily Photo - Vail Mountain Skiing is much improved! With well over 24" of new snow this last week, skiing in Vail is much improved! Much of Vail's 6,000 acres is now open with the addition of a good deal of the back bowls and many runs in Blue Ski this last week. The weather forecast for this evening (Feb. 2) is calling for 8" to 10" more. Looks like a powder day tomorrow morning! One of way too few this year. If you've been waiting for better conditions to come to Vail, stop waiting. From now on (0 comments)
vail mountain: Vail, Colorado Daily Photo - History in Black and White

Vail, Colorado Daily Photo - History in Black and White - I passed a pastorial historical scene along the Eagle River this morning on my way to ski Vail Mountain. We have just been blessed with a few inches of snow here in the "Down Valley" and the sun just poked out of heavy clouds. Nice light! Vail Mountain has had over 20" of new snow in the last few days and another 9" last night. Seems the word got out and litterally every powder hound in the state decided to come to Vail this morning. It's nice to have the (2 comments)
Vail, Colorado Daily Photo - Significant Snow Blesses he Vail Valley Over 8" of snow has fallen on Vail Mountain over the last 24 hour period. While skiing has been very good on limited terraine over the last month, there has been a definite lack of the white stuff. This nice dump has brought smiles to the faces of locals and visitors alike! Further adding to valley grins is an improved jet stream flow and a nice line of Pacific storms that are forecast to track through the area over the next few days with a really big storm (6 comments)
Our Beautiful Valley Daily Shot - Vail, CO: Fun an dSun on the Practice Course - It's no secret that we have not had a terrific amount of snow this ski season - true all over the West. As you can see, however, things are just fine here on the Golden Peak practice course where Lindsey Vonn learned her turns. In fact, the entire mountain (the part that's open) is offering surprisingly good skiing for the Martin Luther King weekend. As I make this entry, we are enjoying a nice snow storm with hopefully enough inches to shake a stick (3 comments)
Vail, Colorado Daily Photo - Christmas Day Hay Barn - Just about 10 miles up Brush Creek, a little past Adam's Rib Ranch, but not quite all the way to Sylvan Lake, sits this rustic hay barn. I have the opportunity to dirve by this old barn once or twice a year. Every time I do I wonder about the human drama it has witnessed for about 100 years or so. It never seems to change - nor does it ever stay the same. For instance, the log farm house up on the hill behind the barn....it's not there any (1 comments)
Vail, Colorado Daily Photo - Moon Over Mountain Star - While on a recent architectural photo shoot in the Vail Valley's Mountain Star subdivision I was blessed with the rising of this fabulous full moon. Over the years I have been working with a camera I have found few instances when the timing of a moon shot - cloud cover, ambient light, color of the sky, and earth surroundings - have meshed. This was one of those times. So here we have an iconic moon to the East and the lights of the Eagle Valley and Beaver Creek to the South. (3 comments)
Vail, Colorado Daily Photo - Although It's Been Said Many Times, Many Ways.... Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays to all. May this day be filled with family, fun, thankfulness, food, and football - not to mention a few turns on the mountain if you are here in the Vail Valley. Christmas day has dawned clear, blue and frosty in the Vail Valley. What a wonderful place to be during the holiday season! Hope you can make it up! Photo: Nilsson Images
Vail, Coloraod Daily Photo - A View of Things in the Vail Valley - While the snow cover is thinner in the Vail Valley than we are used to this time of year, reports from skiers coming off the mountain on this Christmas Eve are very favorable! Variety of open slopes is somewhat limited but what is open is in wonderful condition, thanks to Vail Resort's top flight Mountain Maintenance team. Unfortunately, with no new snow in the forecast, these pro's are going to have their skills tested before the high Christmas Season crowds go home. And crowds there are! Early (4 comments)
Vail, Colorado Daily Photo - Silent Night Castle Peak is an imposing feature that lords over the entire lower Eagle Valley and is prominent enough to be home to every television/radio/telephone tower between the top of Vail Pass and Glenwood Canyon. It looks like a medieval castle during the daytime and even more so on a clear moonlit night. I wish I knew the name of the conical peak to the left in this photo. It's obviously the cone of an ancient volcano that must have been quite a site in it's day. The entire lower Eagle Valley shows (7 comments)
Vail, Colorado Daily Photo: A Trace on the Dog Means 4" on the Mountain - What's not to like about 4" of new snow on the mountain this morning? Light, fluffy stuff that makes for really nice turns! The trail crew is doing a beautiful job making a day on Vail Mountain an enjoyable experience and while we are still a ways off from opening the back bowls, there is plenty of great skiing available. There is even talk of opening up a few more lifts this weekend - just in time for the pre-Christmas crowd. Photo: Nilsson Images (3 comments)
Vail, Colorado Daily Photo - 70 to Zero in 4 Seconds - Last week was World Cup Week on the Birds of Prey Downhill Course in Beaver Creek. The ringing of cow bells by the Swiss in the stands (who were feeling no pain) could not override the fact that this guy had just come through the finish gate at well over 70 MPH just seconds before. If you haven't seen a World Class downhill in person, you owe it to yourself to come to Beaver Creek in the first week of every December. You will never forget the experience (1 comments)
