judyann lorenz: Mansfield, Missouri -- Mansfield Home Center-- A Growing Business - 01/21/08 01:54 PM
Mansfield Home Center is the new name for the former Mansfield Building Supply.  We are enjoying some creative, but classy new TV commercials for Mansfield Home Center on local (Springfield, MO) television.   We are glad to see aggressive marketing of a good business for Mansfield.  I recommend similar alert marketing for other businesses.  And for those who wonder, Mansfield is alive and well.
Congratulations on the new moves, Mansfield Home Center. I am complimented to be able to acknowledge you at my other blog, Ozarks Mystique on the OzarksMountainCountry.com website.
There are two other stores connected to Mansfield Home Center in Mansfield, Missouri. … (0 comments)

judyann lorenz: That Stand-by Electrical Equipment has Hidden Costs - 11/05/07 07:56 AM
I read a very articulate news item this morning about the power demands for our standby ‘tools' and equipment.   For along time, I have been carrying on about the green issue of leaving a computer turned on all the time.  In terms of our pocketbooks, to leave a computer turned on has been estimated to be about the equivalent of leaving two light bulbs burning all night - not the new low usage bulbs, but the old ones.   This doesn't ruin the economy at our house.  What does get my attention the consideration about having 2 million homes and/or offices leaving … (2 comments)

judyann lorenz: I Don't Want No Stinking ToolBars - 11/04/07 02:39 PM
I have a personal issue with the toolbars being offered to me on every side!   Search engines and groups or services all seem to think that I want to have their options right at my "mouse tip".
That assumption is not correct.  What I want on the browser is STUFF from the Internet.  I do not appreciate having about 1/3 of my monitor taken up by toolbars.  When the latest IE was launched, there was some sort of deal that assumed that we would want to work with Yahoo searching.  Another incorrect assumption for this searcher.
As a personal choice which you … (6 comments)

judyann lorenz: If That is Wireless; Bears have Bathrooms with Italian Tile and a 6-pak Hot-tub - 11/04/07 02:36 PM
The first time I saw a wireless mouse, it seemed to make some sense.  The owner had a laptop without a typical mouse plug.  There was no silly mouse tail to deal with.  I think it had been a gift from his kids; he had some obligation to appreciate it.
I was really turned off by the receiver that required an electrical outlet.  Maybe there was no mouse tail connected to the computer, but the receiver was a shackle to the office.   Leave the security blanket of a wired office and he was back to the touch pad to navigate around … (2 comments)

judyann lorenz: Did you hear the one about how computers were going to save paper? - 10/22/07 03:23 AM

Did you hear the joke about computers being invented to save paper?  Now that we don't have to type every page or make mimeograph stencils or those worksheet chemical copies, we  can just choose a number of copies and click print.
It seems like we need a hard copy of almost everything.  The day is just print-etey, print-etey all through the hours.   I print research information so I can sort through all the matter and find the data I need.  I often keep this research information for future reference, but seldom refer to it after the final reports are done.   I … (2 comments)

judyann lorenz: Green Water useage -- There are some gray areas that aren't always addressed. - 08/26/07 04:14 PM
The Three Minute GREEN Shower from Douglas Garbe, is not a new idea -- and the post about it brought back memories.
When I was in school, one of our civics classes talked about Americans working with people in SE Asian countries and recommending typical American hygienic habits, such as take a bath once a week, minimum. The people who were being lectured about keeping clean were shocked because their religion had them get into the river for a 'bath' several times a DAY!
But, we didn't always have running water in the house when I was a kid. Tub baths were treats … (10 comments)

judyann lorenz: Mansfield, Missouri -- Muddy Toes in the Ozarks - 08/18/07 01:02 PM
Boy, has it been hot! and Dry. We've had to do the necessary watering to keep things alive. Containers have a particulary tough time, but we manage to get them some sustaining water every day.  Seems like the rainmaking here could have carried over for the real stuff just a little.  Zero precipitation on our road for August.
August is like that in the Ozarks; it seems AWFUL during the dry month, but this too shall pass.  And, when it does, the rains will revive the grass; the grass will forgive and grow and Himself will be mowing at Thanksgiving again!  When … (4 comments)

judyann lorenz: Mansfield, Missouri -- Coming Back to the Book - 07/29/07 01:27 AM
Doing the 30 min a day thing and reading while I eat lunch have helped me work my way through two Anne Bronte books this spring/summer.  The bigger collection is in one book with thin pages, like Bible paper.  I'm not sure I want it in the peanut butter territory, but night stand reading will work.  Lunch reading is taking me through a great biography on Quanah Parker.
This week Amazon sent me THE MILLIONAIRE REAL ESTATE INVESTOR and THE MILLIONAIRE REAL ESTATE AGENT (well, I had to order them)   They will add to the studying books -- My Christmas gifts were pruning/grafting books and a tool box … (2 comments)

judyann lorenz: Mansfield, Missouri -- Hey, Turnip-head! - 07/27/07 03:46 PM
I have, for years, endured the row of turnips. I recommended they be considered a good plow-down for our heavy, clay soils, if they even germinated. The ones I had tried tasted like cabbage cores. As long as we had peanut butter and celery, someone else could have the turnips.   Turnips are tasty with new potatoes & onions; pretty with the impatienx.  Just as yummy and nearly as pretty as Bob Sharpe's  Tomatoes-Part 2   It looks like Bob is setting up for some fried green tomatoes.
This year, we had turnips germinate like you wouldn't believe! They pushed their little purple … (4 comments)

judyann lorenz: Newbie or Not, I've Found an Excellent Online Networking Book - 07/20/07 01:48 PM
Online Networking for Newbies was released just this week by Angela Smith of Accu-Assist.
Angela is an active moderator on professional forums for virtual assistants and a successful virtual assistant herself. Based in the Midwest, USA, she has a varied range of clients, but is specifically interested in proofreading and editing e-books, newsletters, articles, and Web content. Before the book, Angela was a catalyst for me in business development and planning. She willingly shared her path of figuring out how to launch a business that was not floundering through babysteps, but truly up and running from Day One. Now, she's stepped out … (4 comments)

judyann lorenz: Mansfield, Missouri -- We Had a Family Tradition Begin on July 4, 2007 - 07/06/07 03:17 PM
My cousin's family came to our house for the 4th.  We haven't been able, over the years to spend much time with her family, so we were really excited.  RL got so wound up when I told him they were coming that he just had to leave the office and go for a drive!   He found a produce stand with fresh garden things from the Boot Heel of Missouri -- roasting ears and Black Diamond Watermelon.
The guys all had a bonding time sharing hobbies while my cousin and I traded some family heirlooms.  The garden was looking good and her daughter … (4 comments)

judyann lorenz: Mansfield, Missouri -- Reflections on Teams and Virtual Teams from the Ozarks - 06/29/07 11:16 AM
Virtual teams or telecommuting became a twinkle in the eye of real estate professionals the minute fax machines and direct dial long distance were launched. We just KNEW there had to be some way we could make this work -- to be able to contact our office effectively and quickly from an impressive distance.
By the moment, technology grows to enable this dream to become more of a reality. Not only is administrative support available from a distance, the entire team can function, can mastermind, can accomplish without being face to face in a tangible way.
Virtual activity and teamwork necessitates pro-active … (5 comments)

judyann lorenz: Get the Most from Your Equipment - 06/26/07 11:21 AM
I've been telling myself I needed a new monitor (which I may still be able to justify), but I'm embarrassed to admit that I had been reluctant to touch it with anything moist for cleaning.  A little brush duster was not dust and smear busting like it needed to do.  After researching the issue, I was encouraged to go ahead with a soft cloth and clear the view!  I did add a screen shammy to the equipment for the future.  It will dust or wash as I need it.
This is a CRT monitor, the LCD monitors need a little different … (2 comments)

judyann lorenz: Mansfield, Missouri - Eco-friendly Horse Properties Part 2 - 06/22/07 03:19 AM
janeAnne's comments and ideas this morning on her post to the Eco All Stars HORSE and HOME, have given me inspiration to share how we do this on a small scale that can be adjusted to fit most any budget and fit most any land size. We have a small property -- just over three acres. All of that isn't available for use due to slopes, woods, etc. So, what do we do to make comfortable, loved horses and benefit the property
The Ozarks offers a climate and geography to appeal to the small property owner.  Horses are extremely popular.  The World Headquarters of the … (7 comments)

judyann lorenz: Holy Hot Hello! Solar and alternatives in the news - 06/20/07 09:23 AM
I was pleased to catch a note going past on my Yahoo news last week about the Vatican setting up solar equipment on some of its buildings. According to this post by Matt James, the first building to become solar effective will be the Pope Paul VI auditorium. That is just the way things ought to be.
Then, this morning there was a note from Hank Green about the world's first solar cell phones. A company named Hi-Tech Communications, ltd located in St. Albans, Hertx, UK is releasing a solar cell phone for $510. Kind of pricey, but we all know … (4 comments)

judyann lorenz: Beware, the Green Takeover! - 06/18/07 03:32 PM
A couple years ago DH and our grandson had a family compettion to grow a GIANT PUMPKIN.  Neither one had much success, but they were kept busy all summer babying their pumpkins.
The pumpkin at our house set off a volunteer vine that DH transplanted in the garden.  It was absolutely a beautiful vine. But the pumkins were all like that little orange gem in the left bottom corner.    But, we still had a picture to send of Grandpa and a giant Pumpkin

The puny pumpkins froze in the winter and met their highest and best use in the compost pile.
I said I thought … (12 comments)

judyann lorenz: How it Goes 'Round at the Copyright Mulberry Bush for a Dipsy Doodle - 06/18/07 04:42 AM
Lenn Harley  wrote an extensive, explanatory and informative post about copyright infringement.
'YOU CANNOT "REPRINT" ON ACTIVE RAIN. IT IS COPYRGHT INFRINGEMENT "    The linking process here was exceptionally easy.  AR doesn't want you to have to strain when referring to someone else's genious.  The linked post drew excellent comments from other Rainers.  The entire thread has become valuable material for the BRAIN use of readers -- to learn how to apply the knowledge.
