mortgage brokers: News Flash - Real Estate Values To Increase! - 11/28/07 07:05 AM
As is sometimes the case here on AR, I'll read a posting and it will inspire me to write a post of my own on that or on a related topic.  This is the case here.
I just read a post about being careful with what you say to your buyers regarding real estate as an investment.  It's not that I disagree with Ms. Harley, I do think that a real estate or mortgage professional should be careful with the advise that they give out. However, I honestly don't think that you need to be fearful of telling people that buying a … (33 comments)

mortgage brokers: Man Found Frozen In South St. Louis - 11/20/07 08:47 AM
A few days ago I wrote a post where I asked if people thought that the media plays a story straight.  The over whelming response was, "No, the media does not play it straight with the public."
Frankly, I wasn't surprised.  I had seen a perfect example of how the media plays things when my father passed away 21 years ago.  I found out that he had died when the local NBC affiliate led their local evening news broadcast with the teaser, "Man Found Frozen in South St. Louis".
Having just sat down to watch the news, I waited while they broke for … (7 comments)

mortgage brokers: Poll Question: Does The US Media Play It Straight With The Public? - 11/17/07 02:02 PM
The reason that I ask this question is that I've been following HR3915 fairly closely as it went through the House Financial Services Committee and have read up fairly well on how this whole sub-prime mortgage fiasco has come about.  In following this bill and reading up on this mess, I've done quite a bit of reading, as well as watching news and business news reports on the "crises"!  In all of this reading and watching, I've only heard an occasional murmur about the roll that Wall Street has played in this mess.
While Barney Frank, who if you watch as he … (17 comments)

mortgage brokers: Good Regulation Vs. Bad Regulation - 08/08/07 03:44 AM
I just read a post by Michael Schindler called, "What Happened To Lending In Minnesota" which was very informative about a new state law that is going into effect in Minnesota that apparently is intended to regulate us big bad mortgage brokers.  While Michael's post was in no way disparaging towards mortgage brokers, the fact that the State of Minnesota is singling them out for legislation is disconcerting.
Here in Missouri a few years back we had a large mortgage brokerage called "Lender's Mortgage" go belly up.  What happened was they were using a funding arrangement called "Concurrent Funding".  That is where … (5 comments)

mortgage brokers: Bank, Mortgage Bank or Mortgage Broker, which is better? - 08/01/07 05:47 AM
Is there a correct answer to this question? I don't think so.  Depending upon your particular circumstances,  the "best" type of lender may be any one of the three.  So, how are you supposed to be able to make an intelligent decision?
Well, I would suggest that you shop around and do your research.  Referrals from friends and family members can be helpful, as well as knowing the particular strengths and weaknesses of the different types of lenders.
The one bit of advice that I would like to give you is to be careful because loan officers are basically sales people.  Technical sales … (5 comments)

mortgage brokers: Where Have All The Good Lenders Gone? - 07/12/07 08:19 AM
Back in the good ole days of mortgage banking people had respect.  Wholesalers knew who was buttering their bread.  We didn't have global warming and you could get a decent cup of coffee for less than a buck!
Okay, we had global warming, but we just didn't know about it.  But the truth of the matter is that wholesale mortgage lenders did treat their broker/clients with a lot more respect before the industry got flooded by used car dealers, out of work con men and various minions of evil.
It's not that I blame the wholesalers.  It's hard to respect mortgage brokers when … (0 comments)

mortgage brokers: Stop Blaming The Mortgage Broker! - 05/03/07 01:25 AM
Since the sub prime mortgage market meltdown began there has been talk about all kinds of laws being put into place to regulate the terrible mortgage brokers out there who have caused this terrible problem.
TIME OUT!  Let's put the blame where it really should be!
I'm a mortgage banker, so I'm going to preface this.  I'm not excusing any fraudulent behavior on any body's part.  Be they a mortgage broker, a mortgage banker or a bank.  If somebody was mislead or lied to, then the current laws should be strictly enforced.  People should go to jail!
That said, blaming the mortgage broker … (16 comments)

mortgage brokers: NUNYA Business What I Make! - 04/27/07 08:16 AM
One of the cool things about reading the posts here on AR is that sometimes they provoke you.  I read one such post today that actually referenced an earlier post. The earlier post, "The Mortgage Cartel and the Need for transparent Search" went on a rant about the Great YSP Conspiracy" (My emphasis) and I wrote the following comment on his post:

"While I agree that it's BS that mortgage banking companies don't have to disclose what they are making on a mortgage and even more BS when a bank that is BROKERING a mortgage doesn't have to disclose what they are … (1 comments)
