localism: Overly Country Christmas, Westmoreland Fairgrounds Greensburg PA - 10/21/10 04:38 AM
There are Holiday festivals of lights and then there is Overly's Country Christmas!  This unbelievable display has been recognized nationally and featured on Good Morning America and in countless articles locally regionally and nationally.  It is recognized as one of the best in America.
Begun as a simple display at the home of Harry Overly for neighborhood children, the scenes have grown dramatically and soon overwhelmed the family's ability to do it on their own.  For the first 35 years it was held at the family's 7 acre estate.  Soon the event was raising funds for Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh and … (0 comments)

localism: Halloween History & HallowBoo at Idlewild Park - 10/20/10 03:30 AM
Hallowe'en, a Scottish contraction of the term All Hallows Evening is a rather ancient tradition with both pagan and Christian roots.  In the Celtic tradition it represents a fall festival called Samhain, denoting the end of "longer days" and the commencement of "darker days".  It was thought that at this breakpoint in seasonal cycles the barriers between the living and spirits worlds became "thin".  Lighting of bonfires and donning of masks were thought to protect one by warding off less kindly spirits.
In the Christian tradition the feasts, festivals and religious celebrations of All Saints Day, and the following All Souls Day, celebrate not … (0 comments)
