living in loudoun county: Snowmagedon Continues - Important Safety Tips. - 02/08/10 03:21 AM
If you're living in this Loudoun/Dulles or the surrounding area this is not news to you.... We JUST had 34.5 inches of snow, and 2 snowfalls within the previous week totalling about 10 inches of snow, and now we're expecting another 5-9 inches beginning tomorrow. Because our area rarely experiences this kind of snow (well, this is actually the snowiest on record), we simply aren't equipped.  So, be patient.  Life will return to 'normal'.  For now, relax and enjoy.
Streets:   VDOT is calling in reinforcements from areas nearby that have completed their own snow removal because they didn't get the 'dump' that we … (0 comments)

living in loudoun county: LivingInLoco: The Classic Girl Scout Cookie: Trefoils - 12/23/09 12:24 PM
Girl Scouts have been selling shortbread cookies for more than 60 years, and this classic (called "Trefoils" by Little Brownie Bakers), remains a favorite.  An online opinion poll found at GirlScoutCookies.org reports that 5% of us claim it is our favorite GS cookie (a 3 way tie for 4th place); but the GS organization reports that the shortbread cookies account for 9% of sales, rating 5th. Personally, I think these are refreshingly simple and I love eating them (for breakfast) after dipping them in my coffee.  PLEASE do not tell my children I eat cookies for breakfast - it would shatter their … (0 comments)

living in loudoun county: Trying To Lead - 10/10/09 06:16 AM
I was a Girl Scout for a short time as a child.  My leaders, while they tried and their hearts were in the right place, didn't create much opportunity.
My first leader was a nice lady, our meetings were afterschool at her house.  She had a special needs son who was there and no one to help her manage him or her other daughter during our meetings.  We did a lot of coloring.  That's really all I remember.
My second leader was a single mom who kept missing meetings because of her work schedule.  Eventually, she had meetings on Saturday mornings, but … (0 comments)

living in loudoun county: Shopping for a Cause! (Support Your Schools) - 09/21/09 03:30 AM
As we all know, it is serious back to school time.  It seems to be consuming my life, and if you have kids in school, it's probably been your focus... too.  I was sent home a list of web sites where I can register my various store loyalty cards so that any school benefits are sent to my children's schools.
But, you do NOT need to have school aged kids to participate. If you have preschool children, I suggest that you sign up for the schools that your children WILL attend.  If you do not have children, perhaps you'll choose to register … (1 comments)

living in loudoun county: LivingInLoco: Something's Fishy Around Here - 09/03/09 05:16 AM
The National Aquarium at the Baltimore Inner Harbor is about an hour from Loudoun County - an hour and half from Leesburg (where I live).  It's a fabulous place for kids and adults alike and makes for a great day trip.
My kids (3 and 6) had never seen real sharks (although we all watched the Discovery Channel's shows on Shark Week, with great fascination).
So, on Monday we got in the car and went off for an Inner Harbor adventure.  The kids were so amazed at the Inner Harbor - the art, the fountains, the navy ships, the high rises, the treats … (0 comments)

living in loudoun county: First Fridays in Downtown Leesburg - 08/21/09 01:09 PM
First Friday events are held in downtown Leesburg on the first Friday of each month. On these nights, 35 different specialty shops and businesses stay open until 9:30 offering various types of entertainment. Each month, scheduled entertainment is posted at http://www.firstfriday.com/. The entertainment varies, but usually includes many choices for art galleries, live music, wine tastings and more.
In August, my husband and I went and took the kids (ages 3 and 6). We grabbed a light dinner at the historic Georgetown Cafe and headed to the Last Ham Standing, a regulary scheduled monthly improv comedy show at Tally Ho Theatre...and yes, … (0 comments)

living in loudoun county: A Little Girl Gets Her First Taste of Farm Life in Loudoun County - 07/17/09 12:40 PM
Living in Loudoun, I think it is fitting that my daughter have at least a taste of horseback riding and farm life. So, she just finished up a week of Horseback Riding Camp.
Honestly, I chose the camp based on price, hours, and proximity to my house; which led us to Main Tree Farm off Dry Mill Road. On the surface, it looks like a nice little farm, but once you enter the barn, there is tons of deferred maintenance. The barn is HOT and it smells.
Between you and me, my impression was that they were using the kids … (1 comments)

living in loudoun county: Quick Beach Getaway - 07/15/09 03:33 AM
We have many great attractions here in Loudoun County. Even so, everyone must have a change of scenery now and then. One of my family's favorite weekend or vacation getaways is the beach; we go once a year. The closest beach to us is Ocean City, Maryland, about a 3 to 4 hour drive from Loudoun. Although Ocean City is often criticized for being overly commercial; it just so happens that I like to have lots to do on my vacation! No matter your likes or budget, there is no reason to be bored. OC has some of the finest ocean … (1 comments)

living in loudoun county: Daisies at The Animal Park - 06/26/09 12:32 PM
In Loudoun, we have a few petting zoos including two that are rather popular. Since I live in Leesburg, my family frequents the one here just outside of town, Leesburg Animal Park. It's about 10 minutes from my home. There, the you can see monkeys, huge tortoises, goats, emus, a camel, donkeys, bison and a other exotic creatures. Last year, they were temporarilyhousing white tigers for the national zoo, drawing a lot of press. My family frequently visits at Easter, and nearly all locals attend "Fort Pumpkin" (a Halloween themed event) in the fall; we've even had my daughter's birthday party there. … (0 comments)

living in loudoun county: Living in Lo. Co. : Rust Manor House and Nature Sanctuary - 06/17/09 01:01 PM

Rust Manor House and Nature Sanctuary are tucked away in a small nook inside the town of Leesburg. Even long time locals sometimes forget about this wonderful hidden treasure right in our back yard. With the help of my Daisy Girl Scout troop, I had a wonderful visit yesterday afternoon. We hiked through the trails, visited the pond, snacked on fresh watermelon, climbed on a fallen tree, enjoyed chatting at the empty amphitheatre, and made bird feeders with peanut butter and bird seed at the picnic area. Despite the heat and humidity, the trees provide lots of shade and the area … (0 comments)
