buyers edge: Snakes in Your Yard - 05/05/15 08:09 AM
Is It Ever A Good Thing?
Venomous snakes can be found all across the United States. Rattle snakes, Copperheads, Coral snakes and Cottonmouth snakes are among the most venomous snakes in the country.
My neighbor and a public utility worker knocked on my door late this afternoon. They had been working near a woodpile when they spotted two snakes. One slithered away but the other snake, the bigger of the two, slipped under the woodpile. They were convinced it was a Copperhead or Cottonmouth-a venomous snake lying in wait.
Was it venomous and preparing to attack? How can you tell and what should you do?

buyers edge: Rock Creek Park in Washington D.C. - 05/03/15 10:21 PM
Green Space in Washington D.C.
The first time I drove my in-laws through Rock Creek Park, they couldn't believe they were still in Washington D.C. My father-in-law, who owned a cherry orchard in Oregon, was awestruck. Both had heard of Rock Creek Park, but were surprised at the beauty & density  of the forest north of Georgetown.
Teddy Roosevelt skinny dipped in Rock Creek Park
Roosevelt enjoyed rock climbing in the park and was known to take White House visitors on hikes through the forest.
The park offers hikers, runners and bicyclists miles of green space to exercise and stay within DC city limits.  Traveling outside of the city, … (0 comments)

buyers edge: Exclusive Buyer Agents-Who Are We? - 05/03/15 01:55 AM
Exclusive Buyer Agents work for Exclusive Buyer Brokers
At a recent Open House, my clients and I were greeted by a real estate agent. He was working for the Seller, sitting at their kitchen table. He takes my card, looks at my title, Exclusive Buyer Agent, and says, "Oh, I'm a buyer agent too."
And then to further make his point he adds, " Yea, I am a designated buyer agent. Took the course last month." My clients later asked, "What was he talking about?" An excellent question and one example of the confusion that abounds in real estate language.
The confusion about … (14 comments)

buyers edge: Battery Power for Your Home - 05/01/15 03:38 AM
Tesla-expanding from car batteries to home batteries
Tesla Motors announced this week they are creating residential and business battery systems. The Powerwall Home Battery is being marketed as a way to wean us off of oil and gas. According to Tesla CEO Elon Musk, the system could help home buyers who want to store solar power and/or live off the grid. In fact, the Powerwall Home battery could connect people living in remote parts of the world to power.
Tesla is not the first to test alternative power. Facebook is testing solar powered drones
that bring internet to off-the-grid places. Home buyers looking to … (6 comments)

Housing Recovery Moving Forward through 2016
A growing trend in the Washington D.C. Metropolitan area has home buyers back to the Burbs. In Maryland, DNA Alley is  bringing hundreds of scientist to Montgomery county. Researchers and scientist are flocking to Rockville, Garrett Park, Silver Spring and Bethesda.
The housing market is slowly recovery. According to National Association of Home Builders Chief Economist David Crowe, "This should be a good year for housing, buoyed by sustained job growth, rising consumer confident that is back to pre-recession levels." He adds, "We expect 2016 to be even better, due top a significant amount of pent-up consistency."

buyers edge: How to Deal with Office Gossip - 04/27/15 10:20 PM
Years ago, I worked at a radio station in a large square building. In the center of the square, there was a central gathering place. A secretary sat at a desk in the middle of the room. She was the first person of contact for the station. She was also the chief gossiper in the building.  Whatever was going down, the secretary knew about it or at least talked about it to anyone who would listen.
Why is gossip so appealing?
It didn't take long to figure out, if she was gossiping about managers and the sales staff, she was gossiping about me too. Truth be … (71 comments)

buyers edge: Create a Wildlife Habitat - 04/25/15 09:58 PM
Beautifully Landscaped Yards Appeal to Home Buyers
When you landscape with wildlife in mind, it's entertaining! As of this year, there are over 400,000 wildlife gardeners across the country.  These gardeners live in condominiums, town houses and single family homes. How much space you have is less important than what you  grow.
The National Wildlife Federation will certify your garden
Providing food, water and cover for wildlife gives you the chance to watch your own Reality nature show. Here are a few main points to consider-

buyers edge: Buying a Home with a Fireplace - 04/25/15 10:35 AM
Hardwired for Gathering 'Round a Fire
It's a cold spring in the Washington D.C. area. Last night, temperatures dipped to 40 degrees and daytime highs are expected in the low to mid 60's this week.
Instead of complaining about the cold, which I've done enough already, we are gathering around the fireplace.
When I was a first time home buyer, a fireplace was on my "must have" for home list
At the time, I couldn't explain why I had to have a fireplace. It was more of an emotional rather than a logical reason. I remember telling my exclusive buyer agent about the fireplace, he just smiled. A man of … (0 comments)

buyers edge: Louie C.K. Words of Wisdom - 04/25/15 09:01 AM
It's a busy day for Home Buyers! Marshall is in McLean Virginia touring town houses. I will be in Potomac, Olney & Silver Spring Maryland all day touring single family homes. But there is always time for a little Louie C.K. wisdom & humor! Have a great weekend!
I love hearing people tell the story of their life. How they got to where they are and who mentored or inspired them to be their best. Louie C.K.'s life story is fascinating. It's inspiring, a little tragic, a testament to the human spirit.
He is not perfect and never pretends to be-I love that. Here … (3 comments)

buyers edge: Preapproval is the First Step to Buying a Home - 04/24/15 01:31 AM
 Preapproval is not's better
If you Google online prequalification, links to banks and calculators fill the first page. Some of the links promise prequalification for a mortgage in ten minutes or less. But what does that prequalification give you?
Prequalification is a small first step when buying a home. You can be prequalified online or over the phone. You supply basic information about your income, debt and assets and a lender gives you an idea of the mortgage amount you qualify.
Prequalification does NOT include
credit report in depth analysis of credit report discussion of financial obligations like alimony, child support or elderly support  … (6 comments)

buyers edge: Is there Radon in Your Kitchen Counter tops? - 04/22/15 10:20 PM
Some Granite Counter tops have trace amounts of uranium
Radon is produced by the breakdown of uranium
Not what we want to hear, right? In almost every other remarks section of a listing, I read "new granite counter tops & kitchen appliances"
Granite counter tops are in almost every flipped house we see with home buyers. So what's the deal with radon? This story is not exactly new. According to a New York Times report in 2008, the popularity of granite counter tops has created an expansion of the types of available granite. The report talks about "hot" counter tops that come from exotic varieties from Brazil … (10 comments)

buyers edge: Beautiful Neighborhoods in Arlington Virginia - 04/21/15 03:33 AM
Brick colonials, Arts & Crafts Additions, Bumped out Ramblers
There are beautiful neighborhoods in Arlington Virginia
Marshall and I went to a party last Saturday night in Arlington Virginia. We were in the Garden City neighborhood of Arlington Virginia. Most of the homes are colonials with huge additions on the back of the houses. The yards are a decent size with large trees in the front and back yards.
Garden City in Arlington Virginia feels like home
It's funny how at home I felt in this neighborhood. Almost immediately, I really liked the houses, streets and overall feel of the area. It's the anti-cookie cutter neighborhood. Sure … (2 comments)

Edison light bulbs, Distressed Hickory floors, Stacked stone backsplashes
Exclusive buyer agents are inspired by house tours
Spring is my favorite time of year! We are touring houses in Virginia, Maryland and Washington D.C. and feel so inspired! Edison light bulbs are a throw back to the old days. They are popular in condos in D.C. and single family homes in the suburbs. The lights offer a calming quality to a rooms decor.

Yesterday, we were in Kensington Maryland and the home owners had put down distressed hickory flooring-such a cool addition to an old 1941 Cape Cod!
