buyers edge: Are We Still Celebrating Christmas in Mid-January? - 01/14/18 04:23 PM
Christmas was a blast! The food, the celebrations, the decorations...but it's over.
When you decorate for the holidays, it's easy to go a little overboard. I get it! When our children were young, we filled the house with miniature lighted villages and fresh garland on the piano and staircase. Outside, white lights lined our garden and two huge wreaths hung on the front of the house.
One year, when Marshall wasn't able to take the lights out of a tree, so we had white lights in our tree until Valentine's Day. We are far from perfect when it comes to taking down holiday decorations … (5 comments)

buyers edge: Why Birds Fly Into Windows and How To Prevent It - 01/12/18 02:08 PM
Birds fly into windows because they see the reflection of the sky.
I was cooking dinner this week when I heard a loud BAM on the window. I ran to see what happened and discovered a large hawk lying motionless on the ground. As I watched, he slowly began to move his claws and head. After many minutes, he flew a short distance and landed in a bush near my bedroom window. I checked on him for hours and into the night. He was breathing but once the sun set, the bird stayed hidden in the bush and shrubbery. At first light, … (4 comments)

buyers edge: Should I Test My Home for Radon? - 01/08/18 10:34 AM
Photo by Christian Sterk on Unsplash
Radon gas is the second leading cause of lung cancer, according to the National Cancer Institute.  Unlike the picture above, radon gas is colorless and odorless. Radon occurs naturally. It is the decay of the elements radium, thorium and uranium in rocks and soil. Radon seeps up through the ground and into the air. In some cases, radon dissolves into groundwater and is released when water is used (when you turn on the shower or faucet).
Radon becomes a serious health risk when it's trapped in areas without adequate ventilation.  In fact, any home that is tightly sealed with insulation … (5 comments)

buyers edge: What Does a Realtor Do For Home Buyers? - 12/20/17 10:43 AM
Marshall and I were leaving the settlement office with our client. She had just bought her first house and we were saying our goodbyes when she turned to us and said,
"So what are you guys going to do now?"
When we explained we are working with other home buyers she was surprised. We had spent so much time corresponding and house hunting with her that she didn't know we had other clients. Wow! It was my turn to be surprised.
But after thinking about it, I understood. We answered her emails, phone calls, and texts promptly. We worked around her schedule, as best … (4 comments)

buyers edge: Why Love Matters in Real Estate - 09/17/17 11:07 AM

"True love is the greatest thing, in the world-except for a nice MLT – mutton, lettuce and tomato sandwich, where the mutton is nice and lean and the tomato is ripe. They’re so perky, I love that." Miracle Max
The 1987 movie Princess Bride is a beautiful story about true love. Princess Buttercup and Wesley encounter serious obstacles (the entire movie) but eventually end up together and live happily ever after.
True Love Prevails!
This true love story is a lot like buying a home. There is no such thing as the perfect house for everyone! Every home buyer has unique expectations … (4 comments)

At Buyer's Edge, we only work for home buyers.

We are wary of flips and frequently share what we've learned from touring flipped houses. To be fair, not all flips are flops. However, if you buy a flipped house that is a flop, it could be a very expensive mistake.
Stephen Carpenter-Israel, Marshall Henderson & Stephen Mercer discuss flips and flops.

buyers edge: How to Prevent a Clothes Dryer Fire - 08/10/17 06:58 AM
2900 Clothes dryer fires are reported in the U.S. each year
When buying a home, most people don't think twice about the clothes dryer. The home inspector usually checks the dryer to be sure it heats properly and that's the extent of the dryer inspection. After our experience this week, we will now be asking every seller when they last cleaned the vent on their dryer.
Our Dryer Story
Our first time home buyers called us saying they had two issues with their new home. First, there were several wet spots on the ceiling. Second, their clothes dryer was not drying properly. It was taking two or … (8 comments)

buyers edge: Why "I told you so" never works - 08/04/17 05:32 AM
It feels sooo good to be right!
It's a little bit happy mixed with smugness and a lofty feeling of superiority. And there are so many opportunities to be RIGHT-
The waiter/waitress screws up your order-Travesty! How dare they! Do they not know who I am! Are they really that stupid? Daughter finally breaks up with the nightmare boyfriend-You should have listened to my advice long ago!  I saw him for who he really was, if only you could have listened to me back then! buyers edge: Baltimore Charm City from a rooftop deck - 08/01/17 06:31 AM
Charm City is magical at night
Marshall and I feel so fortunate to work with great people at Buyer's Edge.  We've become good friends with our fellow Edgies and last night we gathered on a rooftop deck on Federal Hill in Baltimore.
Federal Hill is close to Baltimore's Inner Harbor and Camden Yards. Last night, we heard the cheers from the crowd as the Orioles beat the Kansas City Royals 2-1. What a gorgeous evening!
Many of the Federal Hill row houses were built around the turn of the last century (early 1900's) with three stories and beautiful winding staircases. The homes in this … (3 comments)
